This is a solid, surprisingly dark, entertaining mashup of Frankenstein, fairy tale adventure, dark wizardry, & friendship. This is the author‘s debut, she‘s written many more books since, & while it is well-written there are a few pacing issues & it is definitely too long. That being said, young readers who like their adventure stories with a little edge, a dash of darkness, & high stakes will find plenty to like in this MG book.

Starting this middle grade book about an evil wizard , a town living in fear and a girl with a spiky tail and bolts in her neck who decides she is going to fix everything if she can. I bought the book because of Skottie Young‘s cover art but I‘m definitely intrigued by the story.

Shout out to Megan Hodges (who runs Skottie Young‘s store) for giving me the answer to a question I didn‘t even know I should ask. That question? “Is Fortunately, the Milk the ONLY book Skottie has illustrated?” Because the answer, much to my surprise and delight is no, no it is not. Here are two other books he illustrated—love these covers! Can‘t wait to dive in, I‘m anticipating some fun middle grade adventures!

Good story overall but excruciatingly slow in the middle. I almost gave up but I‘m glad I didn‘t. I‘m interested in reading the other books in the series but hesitant because I‘m wondering if they are just as slow in the middle.

Really loving Monstrous so far! Also, my "I need my space" mug is perfect for these quarantining times! How are you all coping with quarantining? My life hasn't changed much at all because I am home most of the time anyway!

A gorgeous conglomeration of so many fairytale themes and twists! With each page brings a new conflict, a new struggle, a new way to view the world. How much of ourselves is actually ourselves? Are we born, or created? What does it truly mean to be a friend and care? And how much do our actions define who we are? Such a lovely, heart wrenching tale of one girl‘s love for her city and the lengths she will go to in order to protect it!

I wanted to post this picture to show the cons.

The rungs are pretty wide apart underneath so paperbacks don't usually fit, and even standard YA size US books sometimes tilt. It takes very little jostling to cause the tip.

If you put a book too tall on the stand and it has any weight (picture books are okay). It will cause the stand to rotate sideways and fall over.

These are my medium stands. They are actually picture frame stands. Mom said clearance section of Jeffery Allen. She paid around $1 each over 6 years ago. But this is very much Jeffery Allen style.

It is metal and doesn't bend easily (folds up but doesn't bend). Monstrous barely fits.

This is my fantasy section. I find it #unbelievable that I own more fantasy than Sci-fi. Fantasy takes up this case plus another shelf. And that does not include series that are pulled out. #spookyoctober

This is a solid fairy-tale with all the right lessons - not everything is what it seems, don't judge a book by its cover, and making sacrifices for those you love. I figured out where the book was headed fairly early on but it is a book for middle-schoolish aged readers so I didn't anticipate it being overly complex. Also, it's a fairy tale and there is a certain formula to such stories.

I like this one, even though I figured out where it was headed pretty early on. I think someone here recommended it??? If so, thank you to that person.

Kymera works against an evil wizard to save young girls. But nothing is as it seems! This is a fairy tale for kids but I throughly enjoyed it! It's a fun, smart read. I did guess the end rather quickly but I think that was the adult in me. It still is a favorite of late.
