Interpretation of Dreams
Interpretation of Dreams | Sigmund Freud
What are the most common dreams and why do we have them? What does a dream about death mean? What do dreams of swimming, failing, or flying symbolize?First published by Sigmund Freud in 1899, "The Interpretation of Dreams" considers why we dream and what it means in the larger picture of our psychological lives. Delving into theories of manifest and latent dream content, the special language of dreams, dreams as wish fulfillments, the significance of childhood experiences, and much more, Freud, widely considered the father of psychoanalysis, thoroughly and thoughtfully examines dream psychology. Encompassing dozens of case histories and detailed analyses of actual dreams, this landmark text presents Freud s legendary work as a tool for comprehending our sleeping experiences.Renowned for translating Freud s German writings into English, James Stracheywith the assistance of Anna Freudfirst published this edition in 1953. Incorporating all textual alterations made by Freud over a period of thirty years, it remains the most complete translation of the work in print.Completely redesigned and available for the first time in trade paperback"

A month ago I signed up for a course on psychotherapy and counselling, and these are my immediate TBR 🤣

A major disruption to my existing reading projects 😅

Books overflow our shelves and lay stacked in piles beneath windows. I thought to myself, "We don't need them all." So, I put them in new stacks. Many are silly books from grad school that I don't fully accept anymore; Yet, this morning, upon seeing them, I think we just need another bookcase.

The Interpretation of Dreams: The Illustrated Edition | Sigmund Freud, Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson

“...a splendid example of the aversion characteristic of scientific men to learning something new... If there were such a thing in science as a right to revenge, I in turn should be justified in ignoring the literature since the appearance of this book. The few accounts... are so full of folly and misconception that my only possible answer to my critics would be to request them to read this book over again.”

Freud was SASSY.

jcalyn5 HE KEEPS GOING. “The voluminous book on the dream by Sante de Sanctis, of which a German translation appeared soon after its publication, has, so to speak, crossed with mine, so that I could take as little notice of him as the Italian author could of me. Unfortunately, I am further obliged to declare that this laborious work is exceedingly poor in ideas, so poor that one could never divine from it the existence of the problems treated by me.” ☠️ 6y

I don't use this in my work, but I think old Freud texts are a fun psychologist bookshelf staple. This edition is from the 60's.

walryan5 Are you a psychiatrist? My ex is a psychiatrist. I enjoyed reading about dreams. And sometimes I do believe that they can be interpreted. But sometimes I just think they are dreams. Our subconscious is so dominant! 6y

Aaaand this is what happens when you buy a used copy. J.D., your grandparents love you! Good luck with your career! I realize this isn‘t the most up-to-date clinical text, but I bought it for the surrealist illustrations. #usedbooks

I have to admit, I don't know Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat at all, but I gave the song a listen and the wiki a perusal and have come to the simplest of literary connections: Freud's Interpretation of Dreams! #gogogojoseph #melodiousmusicals

CrowCAH Nice take on the musical; dream interpretation! Yay, for thinking outside the box! Most people are using "Joseph/Joe"'s name. 7y
Natasha.C.Barnes @CrowCAH Oh thanks! Yeah that's why these are such rich jumping off points--you can go with title, events in the song, or the themes of the song! 7y
CrowCAH @Natasha.C.Barnes precisely! 😁 7y

Not even your #wildestdreams will faze Herr Freud! In fact, probably even your tamest dreams will become wild in his interpretations; quite a bit of which lead us back to his fave topic: the sublimated sex drive and masturbation. But I'm being unfair, he does cover a wide range of subjects in this one. 😀

Trying to get back into the swing of photo challenges and gonna try to do the month of #AugustGrrrl 💅 💪 @Cinfhen

Simona Last year I was at his museum in Vienna and I was soooo disappointed when I found out that his couch is in the London museum 😤 7y
Cinfhen Haha 😂 @Simona yay @batsy is back!!! I'm actually really interested in dream interpretation but reading Freud intimidates me...I need Dream Interpretation For Dummies 7y

batsy @Cinfhen I think I need the Dummies version 😂 I'm interested in dream interpretation too and the book is fascinating, but too dense to read from start to finish. Fun to dip in and out of though! 7y
rockpools I had to index a book of research on his 3 essays. 😷Never again. And definitely never on public transport. #stilltraumatized 7y
Simona @batsy The couch is everything, exactly ... but I do have a picture of myself on replica from Madame Tussaud Museum 😊 (edited) 7y
merelybookish I went to a pyschiatrist once, a former Freudian. He had a white beard, round glasses and a black leather couch. It was surreal. But he did help me. He told me to rethink my metaphors. 🤔 7y
batsy @Simona Ooh nice 😁 I do hope we are lucky enough to see that pic someday *fingers crossed* 7y
batsy @merelybookish I'm so fascinated by this! Now I'm rethinking my metaphors too 🤔 7y
