loved both these books!
This is definitely the best novel to buy for your bestie who‘s going through a bad break-up; either they‘ll find it hilariously relatable, or it will simply remind them that there‘s light at the end of the tunnel and, someday, they‘ll look back on it all and laugh. A ‘thinly veiled‘ account of the moments in which a heavily pregnant Ephron realises the failure of her second marriage due to her husband‘s infidelity.
I would not describe it as ‘side-splitting‘, but it is certainly amusing and a quick read. None of the characters are particularly likeable, which probably makes it easier to smile at Ephron‘s trademark wit as her world falls apart.
Nora Ephron has a great wit and it shows in the dialogue which I enjoyed but I didn't like a single character. Not a single one.
The MC, Rachel, is a wet blanket that allows herself to get stepped on not just once, but multiple times in the book by different people in her life. It made me question a lot of her choices which lead to where she is at and what the book is about.
A vintage copy of a classic divorce memoir. I have read other books by Nora Ephron but not this one. My other choices for this prompt were already taken, so I stretched my mind a bit. #bookbinge #involvesdivorce
This book would make a great companion read with Carrie Fisher‘s Postcards from the Edge. I also listened to this on audiobook (finished in 2 days!). The narration by Meryl Streep (who I think also plays the MC in the movie adaptation?) is fantastic. I could listen to Meryl read the phone book.
Fans of Ephron‘s films will recognize the wittiness that exudes from the writing, although this novel emphasizes bitterness over the romcom optimism.
I just finished listening to Heartburn; an oldie but a goodie (goodish may be more accurate). Read by Meryl Streep. A humorous look at the rise and fall (mostly the fall) of her marriage. Not a great book but it was engaging & entertaining. A good "listen" in small chunks on my short commute.
I really tried to like this one but I honestly could not stand the main character, Rachel.
The story was loosely based on Nora Ephron's 2nd marriage and it was supposed to be comical. Instead, I heard a character try to tell (more like complain) about her life. She appeared very shallow to me. It sucked what happened to her but at the same time, meh. I give 2⭐️...barely.
I have had on my shelf for ages so perfect for;

In this 'novel' we meet Rachel a famous TV cook, who is pregnant when her journalist husband has an affair with Thelma, a woman with a neck as long as an arm and a nose as long as a thumb. The story is peppered with bitter humour + simple recipes.
Loved this book from a director whose films made a generation laugh.
Audio was definitely the way to go as I think Meryl‘s narration made me enjoy this more than I would have otherwise. A comedic look at a divorce that felt a little one note to me. It didn‘t help that so much of the humor was dated in a way that was uncomfortable. Since this based on Ephron‘s own divorce from Carl Bernstein I did find that I cared enough to google whether or not he ever married the woman he had an affair with.
I loved this book SO much. Partly because it was exactly what I needed after My Dark Vanessa, but this was perfectly well written, funny, subtly observed, relatable, just all round an easy to read but still literary marvel. Very short but I appreciated it like a small perfect dessert. If you ever want a palette cleanser after reading something heavy this was perfect
This was a light-hearted telling of the end of a marriage. I really didn‘t expect to laugh but the author was so funny and Meryl Streep did an amazing job narrating.
Thankyou so much Gemma!! I love all my gifts. Looking forward to this book 😁.. and I love my chocolate! Thankyou again X
I‘m up early , I‘m cooking Christmas dinner today .. Christmas Eve is a busy day 🎄😘

Have a lovely Christmas, Cathy XXX
A humourous witty take of finding out your husband is having an affair.
The introduction to this edition is written by Ephron - in which she sets the backstory of the book and how it is "thinly veiled"
Read for #blackjack21 for #booked2021
Finished this one over the weekend and the movie this morning. Very satisfying read for me especially since my divorce just finalized last month. If you are a fan of covers I recommend checking out Copeland‘s cover of Coming Around Again by Carly Simon which is basically the theme song of the movie. I love it but you have to listen on YouTube because their cover album isn‘t on any of the music streaming services. #Scarathlon #TeamSlaughter +6 pts
Fun to read a book in an afternoon! And a fun book to read, about love, marriage, infidelity, serious topics but handled with a light touch. Some things have not aged well (too many minor characters with "funny" accents or racial stereotypes). But Ephron's wisecracking voice and witty insights are pretty irresistible.
I was inspired to read Heartburn after hearing a discussion of it on the podcast You're Booked. It feels outside of my usual wheelhouse, but my last read was so heavy and long, that this short, light(ish), comic novel is a relief! Maybe time to expand my wheelhouse.
The MC Rachel falls in love with and marries a man, and is pregnant with their 2nd child, when she realizes he‘s a serial cheater...there‘s nobody like Nora Ephron

Out of the blue last night my husband turns to me and asks “Would you rather have dinner with Woodward or Bernstein?“ (great random question BTW)
My answer: Woodward, because if I had dinner with Bernstein I wouldn't be able to stop myself from asking him if he was as horrible as he seems in this dishy book!
Now I have to dig out my copy (with this cover) and read this gem again!
Some parts of this were humorous, and some parts were not. I think I was looking for more humor. It was a quick read, but not one I'd necessarily recommend to others.
What can I say about a book written by Nora and read by Meryl Streep. Both are masters in their crafts.
42, never married, never divorced.
Karen Silkwood reads a Nora (Eff-rin) classic. Interspersed with easy recipes.

1. Absolutely love the tagged book, heartbreaking and hilarious at the same time.
2. Steven Hayden
3. The handmaiden!
4. Can't pick my favourite among La Haine, Heathers, Hardboiled, The Handmaiden and Hard days night
5. Heart ❤️❤️❤️
6. Honey honey!!
I was writing a comfort reading post for my blog yesterday and after getting my copy of Heartburn out to check a few things, ended up sitting on the spare bed reading it for half an hour and then I bought the audiobook so I could listen to it while I prepared dinner. #quarantinegoals
“She‘s furious at me,” I said. “That‘s rich.” All my life I had wanted to say, “That‘s rich.” Now I finally had gotten my chance. “That‘s really rich,” I said. “Listen, you bastard. You tell Thelma that if she keeps calling here, I‘ll tell Betty she has the clap.”
Reading this was like spending a couple of days with my in-laws: it felt like a visit to a NY/NJ family in the 80‘s. It‘s funny but also sad, as it‘s the story of a breaking marriage. A very short fast read with a few recipes sprinkled throughout. There‘s a pasta recipe I‘m going to try, since I‘ve suddenly got a lot of time to cook 👩🍳. There‘s also a recipe for Lima beans and pears casserole 🤢. Won‘t be trying that one!
#RedRoseSeptember I adored this semi autobiographical novel about a food writer in her third trimester of pregnancy, when she discovers her husband is having an affair. #GroundsForDivorce
#SeptemberSins What makes this book even more fabulous is the #PureAndSimple recipes that the author includes throughout the novel.
And total #BonusCoverCrush ♥️♥️♥️
I haven't read Ephron before but I really liked her spicy, irreverent humor. BUT overall I was not a fan of the characters in this book. I didn't root for the love interests and was pretty apathetic about the ending, but I still enjoyed the entertainment factor and Jewish recipes sprinkled in.
Finished reading Heartburn today. I don't think it was spectacularly amazing but Rachel's emotions resounded within me and for that I can't help but like it so much. I love well-delivered monologues of characters where they describe what and how they feel. I've always thought the more detailed the emotions, the better. I think Rachel was a good storyteller. I also listened to a bit of the audio book and Meryl Streep was wonderful.
Started reading Heartburn by Nora Ephron this week. This part in the book reminds me how very strange the human memory is. I have been realizing lately that so many things in my life seemed to be one way or the other when I had been in the moment, but in retrospect it was completely different and sometimes even more different when heard from someone else's perspective.
This is my 2nd Nora Ephron book and I liked it even more than the 1st one! It is billed as fiction but is a thinly veiled memoir, as she talks about her second husband and his infidelity in one of her other books. She‘s hilarious, vulnerable, whimsical yet also very relatable. It‘s a quick read and by the end of it, I wanted to reach through the pages and kick her cheating ass husband where the sun don‘t shine! I loved this! ❤️ 5⭐️
Well that‘s the longest it‘s ever taken me to read a thin book! This tale of a pregnant lady finding her husband has cheated was written in a overly chatty, long sentence, stream of consciousness form that did little for me. There are some great, honest and heartwarming quotes but overall I did not care for the protagonist and it all felt a bit cutesy yet aged!
#bfc update @Mitch @wanderinglynn I managed everything this week and over exceeding on active hours and books! I may get this one finished tonight - so far it‘s making me feel a bit breathless, it needs shorter sentences
This is a story about a woman who is pregnant with her second child and just found out her husband is having an affair. It was amusing at times, but it also felt pretty dated and the main character was hard to root for. I did enjoy the enter woven recipes and foodie talk. (And the narration by Meryl Streep.)
“I have made a lot of mistakes falling in love, and regretted most of them, but never the potatoes that went with them.”
This was my first Nora Ephron and I absolutely loved it. I had no idea divorce could be so funny.
Finished listening to this tonight — my first Nora Ephron. Full disclosure — the writing was great and funny, but I think Meryl Streep‘s masterful narration is what really made this work for me.
Is there anything Meryl Streep CAN‘T do?! Loved her amusing narration of this classic memoir by Nora Ephron. I didn‘t realize Nora wrote the screenplays for several of Meryl‘s memorable films, including this one, Julia & Julia and Silkwood. Perfect pairing I‘d say! I borrowed this awesome audio from #Libby and only waited 2 days. More Meryl please!
