1. According to Mom, no. But it was a trending girl name in the 1950s. The internet says: As a variation of the French chérie, Sherry means "darling," placing it as the very definition of a most beloved person. I‘m good with that?
2. The tagged author is named Sherri

Ida Mae Jones is a wonderful character. I loved her strength and determination to serve her country (and to follow a path for HERSELF rather than one chosen for her by family or society) even as she dealt with racism and sexism. The epilogue is set after the war and I wish I knew which path she chose at that point but at the same time I liked where it ended.

Ida Mae Jones wants to help the war effort, but to be a part of the Women Airforce Service Pilots, she has to pass as white. As she goes through training and later assignments, her success—both in a role traditionally held by a man and as a white woman—calls her to contemplate her identity and what it will mean post-war. Though I wish the end had given more of a peek into her future choices, hers is still a solid historical story.

Here are the month‘s book club picks for East City Bookshop, where I am the children‘s and YA buyer. #riotgrams
I've been in the biggest reading slump I can remember this summer. Was so bummed about missing 24in48 last weekend as I was hoping it would push me in the right direction. So I declared today a personal readathon day. This was my first book finished, and it was wonderful! I don't read much historical fiction; this book makes me think I should read more. #diversebooks
I was all in, right up to page 266 and then I was disappointed. IDK, it seemed to fizzle out at the end. Not because WWII was ending and there wouldn't be any place for the WASP but IdaMae reconcile anything; not her passing, not her affinity for Walt, not her relationship with Jolene and her family.....nothing. After a good cry & nap, she's like, "ok I'm going to do my duty and fly".
The ending just didn't work for me.?
A great #historicalfiction novel about the Women Airforce Service Pilots of WWII. #LitsyAtoZ #F✔️ #girlpower
This book was so heartwarming! All the happy feels!! What a great story of women kicking ass. I felt like Smith didn't go too deep into race in the book, but she did address it and not shy away from that as part of the plot. A super fun read! Also Letter F for #LitsyAtoZ
Not to overlook the younger readers, FLYGIRL tells the story of Ida Mae who wants to follow in her father's footsteps by becoming a pilot. Once WWII begins, she has a chance to become a pilot by joining the W.A.S.P.s. But Ida is a woman & black, which means that it's an almost impossible dream for her in Jim Crow America. Ida is light skinned so she could pass for white, but she would have to deny her family to fulfill her dreams. Will she do it?⠀
I liked this look at the women who worked, even if they were not recognized, to help win world war 2.
A black woman wants to fly planes with the WASP in WWII but it is white only. Should she try to pass as white to live out her dream? What are the costs? Full review at http://www.spiritblog.net/flygirl
Just got these beauties in the mail. Teaching my 8th graders with #1 & #3 in the fall. #2 was recommended to help me learn to teach the kiddies to love reading as much as I do. Can't wait to dive in! Anyone read any of these?
Making the wait for my train bearable. I'm only 32 pages in but I can already tell with the character development and voice that I will LOVE this book!
