Got my book back. Whoever sent the bookmark, thank you very much! Very creative and I‘ve had the Pussycat Dolls in my head most of the evening. Lol. This group is one of the best ones I‘ve been in. pick@Reggie this is a very belated post to say how much I loved your book. I finished it awhile ago, but I‘ve been thinking about it ever since! Reading everyone‘s notes, comments, underlined quotes made this book even richer. 5⭐️

This was gorgeous and heartbreaking and resonated and #LMPBC (round 11) Group Q‘s commentary kept me grinning and feeling seen and understood like Kim Fu masterfully shares and understands the queer experience. It wasn‘t always a joyful ride, but it was a beautiful one and one I would absolutely recommend anyone reads. Thanks for this great pick and it‘ll be in the mail soon!

I found myself thinking of it as a subverted Little Women where instead of an absent father there is an almost cartoonishly overbearing one whose toxic masculinity warps the beauty and individuality of his four children.
The author shows readers heartbreak and loneliness and all that is seedy and gritty, but love and courage and empathy are transcendent.

pickI really don‘t like this cover. It gives me, girl from The Grudge, vibes. I am so happy I read this over this past week and didn‘t barrel through it so I could really enjoy it. Kim Fu goes on my list of poets who write books where despite tough subject matter the language really pops. This goes in the mail to you tomorrow, Michael. Hope all of you in #groupQ enjoy it!
pickKind of had a 'Normal People' vibe but with a specific Transgender plot. I'm on the fence as I wanted more happiness or more explanation for the disfunction, but it was a good read nonetheless.
pickPeter is the coveted male child of Chinese immigrants to Canada. The only problem is, his body is foreign to him. We follow him growing up, trying to work through societal, family, and cultural pressures and never quite feeling he has the right to have or interrogate his own feelings and views. There‘s enough humor to keep it from being bleak, but this is a little heartbreaking.
pickPeter grows up as the only son, with three sisters, in a traditional Chinese-Canadian family in Ontario. The father is controlling, wants Peter to embrace all things masculine, ‘be a man‘, & continue the family lineage. But Peter struggles to suppress his transsexuality, never realises he is not alone. The sisters rebel, couldn‘t wait to grow up, get out of the house. As much as 👇

pickThis...this was a tough one. This is not a happy book. The subject of gender identity and trans identity today is hard enough on its own but when your parents are 1st generation Chinese immigrants, you have three sisters, you're the only son and your father thinks men should carry on the family...being trapped in a male body is almost torture. Squidapus thought this was an incredibly important book to read but suggests taking emotional breaks.
pickI am absolutely gutted by this book. It was brutal, heartbreaking, lovely, hopeful. When your culture is your identity, does that even leave room for you to be anything else? Ugh, this was just SO good.
I kind of fell in love with Kim Fu‘s writing last night, so I dug into the far reaches of my digital tbr for this, it‘s only been hanging out there for four years 🤦♀️

Twitter has just brought this 2014 novel to my attention, about a young Chinese-Canadian transgendered character named Peter.
I stared at Bonnie - her new breasts strapped into place, lacy bra showing through a diaphanous shirt, the abrupt, fleshy curve of her back - and was stuck with envy so hot I could have killed her. She'd broken a promise, done something alone that we were supposed todo together.
