Thank you @BookmarkTavern for picking this interesting read for #LMPBC! I lost patience a few times with the alternating storylines and the pacing, but I ended up appreciating how the meaning of the story changes, mirroring the ever-evolving meaning of language. It gave me White Noise by Don DeLillo vibes.

A collection of short stories interpreting generational trauma, self discovery, & queerness.

This was such a fascinating read! Change‘s use of fabulism & body horror felt almost ephemeral. I felt like I was trying to catch smoke in my fingers. “Dykes” and “Resident Aliens” were probably my favorite stories.

Definitely going to seek out more of Chang‘s work! 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

The waters of the bayou are rising. People from town are disappearing. & Eugene finds himself entranced by the Bonnie & Clyde pair that‘s swept into town.

Wow can Powell set a scene! I could feel the heaviness of a Louisiana summer against my skin. & the insidious creeping horror as we don‘t know really know anything that‘s going on. Really reminds me of Alma Katsu‘s historical horror. & I‘m definitely going to look up more by Powell. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

More and more it‘s the feeling that a book gives me which is what I remember most. If it‘s a particularly powerful or emotional reading experience, I cherish it long after I forget the characters‘ names or other details. This is a book that will leave a lasting mark. Chang‘s imaginative, haunting writing really impressed me. I wanted to underline every sentence. ⬇️

psalva It was full of recurring imagery but it felt fresh throughout, always revealing new connections. Reggie I‘m excited to read this. I spent part of my day with a friend and Barnes and Nobles going through the stacks saying this one destroyed me, this one made me cry for the last 200 pages, this one, I couldn‘t see through my tears. Lolol let‘s do this. 2mo
