River God
River God | Wilbur Smith
River God, the first in Wilbur Smith's blockbusting Egyptian Novels, is a thrilling adventure set amid the mysteries of ancient Egypt. Ancient Egypt. Land of the Pharaohs. A kingdom built on gold. A legend shattered by greed. Now the Valley of the Kings lies ravaged by war, drained of its lifeblood as weak men inherit the cherished crown. In the city of Thebes at the Festival of Osiris, loyal subjects of the Pharaoh gather to pay homage to their leader. But Taita - a wise and formidably gifted eunuch slave, sees him only as a symbol of a kingdom's fading glory. Beside Taita stand his proteges, Lostris, the beautiful fourteen-year-old daughter of his master Lord Intef; and Tanus, proud, young army officer, who has vowed to avenge the death - at Intef's hand - of his father, and seize Lostris as his prize. Together they share a dream - to restore the majesty of the Pharaoh of Pharaohs on the glittering banks of the Nile.

River God | Wilbur Smith

I started reading this book a while ago, but just never really finished it.
After being struck by depression late 2021 I just found it so difficult to read...well..anything.

The fact that Wilbur Smith died relatively recently too upset me.

I've been meaning to read the series for years but kept putting it off.

RIP Wilbur Smith, I've finally started your Egypt series, and I love what I've read so far.

Aylandra Recent update. Having gone over the book again, my opinion of it had soured a bit. Most of it is fine, but towards the end I'll admit I just didn't enjoy it as much. Therefore I've updated my rating from pick to so-so. 2y

For any of you considering #readingafrica2022 (l👀king at you, @squirrelbrain ! 🤣) this would obviouly work for #Egypt! @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

BarbaraBB Egypt is one of the few African countries I do have books from on my shelves.. it's really going to be a challenge! 3y
jenniferw88 @BarbaraBB LibraryThing is a life-saver for this sort of challenge. Their 'common knowledge' page (found either under the homepage & statistics, or by setting your library page to include pages from the settings)! You can import all your books from Goodreads if you don't already have a LibraryThing account too! 3y
squirrelbrain Thanks for the tag…. Although I haven‘t decided yet if I‘ll do #readingafrica2022…😁 3y
jenniferw88 @squirrelbrain lol! You were the only UK litten I could remember who has done all the others! 🤣🤣🤣 3y

This was probably my fourth or fifth reading of this book. I found it a little harder going this time around. I‘m not sure why. Perhaps the circumstances we all find ourselves in is not conducive to my reading concentration abilities. I will have to be more careful about what I read so I don‘t accidentally mess up my perceptions of a book I would usually love. Otherwise, still a great story with interesting characters and world building.

I read this book when I was about 12/13 and completely enamoured with ancient Egypt. I fell in love with the characters. It‘s the only Wilbur Smith book I have ever read and the best one I could have chosen to read!

I don't have a high opinion of Wilbur Smith. In fact this is the only book of his which is a pick for me. Taita is just one of those characters you fall in love with and he does a great job bringing ancient Egypt life. A great balance of action and romance, this is excellent escapism. Just don't bother with the sequel's they are terrible. Adult Content.
