Book #2 of 2024: “Choke” by Chuck Palahniuk

This is the first book I‘ve read by Palahnuik and boy was it intense. Sex addiction, mental illness, scams, and a look at the prisons we put ourselves in. I liked it and can tell it‘ll be the kind of book I‘ll have to sit with for a while.

This one wasn't for me. I really want to like Palahniuk books, but it doesn't happen often.

allureofbeauty Aww that‘s too bad. That‘s my favorite. 2y
AmyG His books….either you love them or not. 2y
AFrostCauseReads I remember reading an interview with him, and he explained how people would often tell him they don‘t like reading but like his books. And how he went on to realize his books aren‘t for readers, they‘re for people who don‘t like reading but want to. I myself used to love his books, they‘re what got me back into reading, but now I wonder if I tried another of his if I would like it as much 🤷🏼‍♀️ (edited) 2y

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @AFrostCauseReads that's an interesting perspective, not sure I would agree with him though. I think maybe it's just where I am in my life. 2y
MicheleinPhilly I‘ve tried two, including this one. He‘s not for me. 2y
DimeryRene @AFrostCauseReads That is interesting to hear. I read many of his books about 9 years ago, and liked them all. Haven‘t read any or reread any since. I wonder if I‘d still like them too! 2y
TieDyeDude I have all of his books up until the last couple. He is an interesting writer who always tries to challenge himself, but sometimes those exercises might be better left as exercises. I never connected with the character or the philosophy of feeling responsible for someone you saved, so I never got a lot out of this book. 2y
TheNeverendingTBR I found this hilarious at parts. 2y

If you like Chuck Palahniuk (Fight Club, Lullaby, etc) you‘ll enjoy this too. If you‘ve never read him before, think antihero, nihilism, mental illness and addiction told satirically. Nothing here is sacred, nothing is politically correct and some unsavory bits of humanity are graphically depicted. My sweet mother would hate this book. I feel like Mr. Palahniuk would be ok with that.

TheNeverendingTBR Hilarious book! 4y

I watched the movie of my latest book read. Sam Rockwell did a convincing job of Victor Mancini and Anjelica Huston as his mother. The movie stayed true to the book. If you can stomach the book the you can handle the movie. #1001books

Our main character Victor Mancini had a really horrible childhood as his mother suffered from mental illness. He turns to sex, alcohol, and choking as a means of coping with life. The story alternates between Victor's sad past and the present. The humor lies between all the crazy things Victor does in the present; choking to pay his mom's bills, working at Colonial Dunsboro and finding the truth about his dad. It is a wild ride but I enjoyed it.

I‘m only 60 pages in, but so far I‘m not into it at all. I‘m going to nap, and then reevaluate. Maybe I‘ll push through until page 100 and then decide if I‘m going to bail or not. I LOVED Damned and Doomed by Chuck Palahniuk, but didn‘t enjoy Snuff... I seem to be hit or miss with his work. @TheAromaofBooks #BookSpinBonanza

Chapter 1 of this book warns you not to read it because it‘s going to piss you off and only get worse from there. Not sure what it says about me, but I liked it anyway. 😂

It‘s about a sex addict (maybe?) who gets money from strangers by pretending to choke in public places. It‘s also about his horrible mother and truly terrible childhood. It takes all the sexiness out of sex. It‘s graphic, dark, foul, unrelenting, and freaking hilarious.

⬇️⬇️

sprainedbrain Reading this book felt sort of like listening to one of those rambling, partially incoherent drunken college party conversations. Only it made sense and had a definite outline, if not really a purpose. The author‘s note and the discussion with the author at the end are awesome, and I always like to listen to authors read their own stuff. 5y
sprainedbrain My first Palahniuk, but I‘m sure not my last. Also a #1001books selection (had to check my notes on that one lol) and this was my #BookAboutAddiction for #Booked2019. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Now, can anyone share their ideas on what exactly is wrong with me that I enjoy this sort of book? 😬🤣

HeathHof Chuck P. Definitely is not for the faint of heart! Haunted is another pretty twisted one and I loved Rant! I started reading this one a couple years ago and had to put it down 😅 5y
Cinfhen Chuck P is odd for sure but he can write!!! Have you read this one @britt_brooke ??? 5y
britt_brooke @Cinfhen Yes, but it was just okay. He‘s super hit or miss for me. I loved Fight Club (as you know), hated Diary, hated Adjustment Day, and liked Invisible Monsters. 5y
Reggie Honestly it‘s hard to talk about this book to people without sounding crazy because yes I love what the whole different announcements mean but my favorite part is about the rape fantasy scene. Not because it‘s about a rape fantasy but just because we can want something so much only to ruin something spontaneous by micromanaging it. I laughed so hard. Try Invisible Monsters or Haunted by him next. 5y
sprainedbrain @Reggie oh that‘s a great observation. I think that‘s what was so funny about the whole book. Victor is irreverent about every societal norm, but so meticulous in his planning of his ‘choking‘ scheme. I think my favorite parts where his taking responsibility for all of the things the hospital women were remembering and his unchosen different identities there. And the airplane Kama Sutra. 😆 I have Haunted on my shelf! (edited) 5y
sprainedbrain @Mynameisacolour I have Haunted! 5y

I forgot to take a picture when I finished this book last week. I really wanted to give it a pick, and honestly, if I had read it at any other time in my life, I probably would have enjoyed it. Unfortunately, the person who recommended the book to me broke my heart a couple weeks ago. They said it was their favorite book in the world, so all I could do was picture him as the main character. My view was skewed from the start.

lucifare I'm definitely going to have to reread it some day down the road! 6y

Ok... now that I‘ve had a few minutes to process...
Everyone in this book is shady as shit. Everything that happens is over the top. He really believed he was the second coming of Christ? He really tried to swallow a ketchup bottle top to have the Heimlich maneuver done and then shits out the detached anal beads? Next time I read a Chuck book, I‘m dropping acid first so I get full crazy feel.

No, I‘m not really going to drop acid...

Bailedbailed

I remember once making fun of a local film critic who had gone ahead and reviewed a movie that she had walked out of half way through. Here I am about to do the same thing. "Choke" starts strong but quickly descends into drivel and nonsense, shock for the sake of shock. I'm not easily offended, but boredom I won't tolerate. Gave up on page 168. Just started "Ask the Dust" by John Fante. Reminded me quickly what great writing is all about.

Had quite a late start to this day. I stayed up way past my bedtime last night because I couldn‘t wait to open my #mfbs box so I‘m paying for it. We just woke up in the morning to take the dogs out to handle their business and then we climbed back in bed. The pups were also very tired because they stayed up with us and aren‘t used to late nights. Enjoyed some tea and a book @JoeStalksBeck sent me in the #myfavoritebookswap box!

This book made me decide that I‘m not that big of a fan of this writer. This book was very bizarre, dark, and raunchy. This normally doesn‘t bother me and I can enjoy this style, but I enjoy having some kind of an ending to the story. I thought the ending was pretty weak. Nothing like the ending to Fight Club! #disappointed

This book is not for the small minded. This novel has the typical Palahniuk style: hardcore, mind boggling, and never disappointing. This story in particular spiked my interests because it addresses mental illness in a manner that is neither romanticized or horrific. It's raw and humorous in manner that very few can pull together. 10/10!

Reggie Its been over 10 years and I still think about this book, like when he says that when people say I love you during sex it means they really love the sex act, and also the girl who overstages the rape fantasy was hilarious to me. Chuck's definitely not for everyone. Even some of his new stuff doesn't jive with me. And every time I hear name announcements somewhere I wonder if its really code for something. Lol. 8y
