This Book Is Overdue!
This Book Is Overdue!: How Librarians and Cybrarians Can Save Us All | Marilyn Johnson
21 posts | 27 read | 44 to read
In This Book is Overdue!, acclaimed author Marilyn Johnson celebrates libraries and librarians, and, as she did in her popular first book, The Dead Beat, discovers offbeat and eloquent characters in the quietest corners. In defiance of doomsayers, Johnson finds librarians more vital and necessary than ever, as they fuse the tools of the digital age with love for the written word and the enduring values of truth, service to all, and free speech. This Book Is Overdue! is a romp through the ranks of information professionals who organize our messy world and offer old-fashioned human help through the maze.

I'm super proud of myself for March's #BookSpinBingo! This is the best I've EVER done. Book 1 was something that I decided didn't fit the challenge prompt & Book 13 was an ebook I didn't get a chance to borrow from the library. The tagged book is my #BookSpin book for March. 😃 Maybe I did so good because it was my birthday month? Or maybe because I stacked the list with audiobooks!

Between my oldest being on Spring Break, my husband taking a couple days off, Saturday being super busy and Sunday being Easter ... I lost track of the days and forgot my oldest had library books due Saturday. Woke up early Monday morning with the dreaded realization of what I had forgotten all weekend. Oops. Luckily I think we can afford the fine. I guess it happens to the best of us every now and then, right?😳🤨😟🙃

JoyBlue At least it goes to a good cause! Hope your weekend with family was lovely. 6y
rretzler I think my family used to single-handedly support our library with our fines - we seemed to always be a few days late. Fortunately our library system did away with fines several years ago and now they will automatically renew books, as long as there‘s not a waiting list, three weeks at a time for up to something like 6 months! (edited) 6y
SleepyDragon @rretzler The library in the past has waved the fines if I returned/renewed the books within a day, but I renewed online this time and the fines were automatically applied. We usually only checkout/renew on Saturdays so that it's easy to keep track of when stuff is due. My son wants to renew these three this Saturday just so all his books are due on the same date. Lol 6y
SleepyDragon @rretzler Books in our system are checked out for two week periods, and we get 9 renewals. 6y

So moved across the state today. I drove a trailer for the first time. I left behind a lot of amazing friends who I will miss so much. But this was the first step of a new journey.

I chose this book to listen to because I needed something that reminded me of the positives of being a librarian. I‘m almost done but I‘m enjoying it a lot.

FlowerFairy Good luck on your new adventure!!! 7y

My evening tonight is sorting overdue library notices to be attached to report cards for parent teacher conferences next week. Hopefully my kids go away and I can put an audiobook on.

Welp, the hubs broke our library overdue free since '03 streak. Good thing we live in an area that stopped charging fees. Off to the library we go.

I paid off my library fines yesterday. My receipt was longer than I am tall.

Keyoung It's not really so bad -- there are around a year's worth of $0.05-$0.20 fines on there 😅 8y

#TBRtemptation post! I think I don't even have to summarize this book in order to get every one of you tempted to buy it 😂👏🏻. I think the cover does more than enough to do that 😉. In this digital age, we can be overwhelmed sifting through all the information out there. We librarians are here to help. Meet librarians gagged by the FBI, a hard-partying children's librarian, a blue-haired radical, voluptuous avatars. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

MicheleinPhilly I have read this and LOVED it. I even wrote a paper on it in library school. ☺ 8y

I'm a library delinquent. While I have nothing overdue at the moment, I am fast approaching my fine limit. Again. The most pathetic part is that I work at the library 40+ hours a week. It's still less expensive than buying all the books we read though!
#photoadaynov16

rubyslippersreads I worked at a public library years ago, and we were allowed to keep books checked out as long as we wanted, with no fines. We just had to be sure to return them to a special shelf. That was a nice "perk." 8y
RanaElizabeth Those fines are just charitable donations to the library, right? That's totally how I justify it. 8y

MarriedtoMrT Me, too. I swear staff get more fines than anyone even though we're there all the time. 8y
BookInMyHands @rubyslippersreads That is so awesome! Our staff didn't always have to pay fines, but then it was noticed that it could be seen as "benefitting from your employment" so the rule changed. 8y

There is some great info in this book, but it's scattered and a little lost in the rambling.

I love the library and my company works with libraries so I'm hoping this is a fun listen. I have been the the mood for the previous three audiobooks I attempted.

I haven't read this one yet, but with the subtitle, it definitely fits the #longtitles criteria. "This Book is Overdue - How Librarians and Cybrarians Can Save Us All". I ironically got it at my library book sale, where I also work. #booktober

This book is super cheesy, but it has high praise for librarians everywhere. Also, it gets me 😏

quote
GoneFishing

Librarians' values are as sound as Girl Scouts': truth, free speech, and universal literacy. And, like Scouts, they possess a quality that I think makes librarians invaluable and indispensable: they want to help. They want to help us. They want to be of service. And they're not trying to sell us anything.

forbirdsandtea This post reminds me that I have library books due today! Thank you! 8y
