The last person who called me Sweetpea ended up dead...I haven't killed anyone for three years, and I thought that when it happened again I'd feel bad. Like an alcoholic taking a sip of whiskey. But no. Nothing. I had a blissful night's sleep. Didn't wake up at all. And for once, no bad dream either. This morning I feel balanced. Almost sane, for once.Rhiannon is your average girl next door, settled with her boyfriend and little dog...but she's got a killer secret.Although her childhood was haunted by a famous crime, Rhiannon's life is normal now that her celebrity has dwindled. By day, her job as an editorial assistant is demeaning and unsatisfying. By evening, she dutifully listens to her friends' plans for marriage and babies while secretly making a list.A kill list. From the man at the grocery checkout who always mishandles her apples, to the driver who cuts her off on her way to work, to the people who have it coming, Rhiannon is ready to get her revenge.Because the girl everyone overlooks might be able to get away with murder...

Bailedbailed

It's a bail but I'm not mad at it. I think it is a very well executed cross between Bridget Jones Diary and Dexter. If you are in the mood for graphically violent female rage then I would defo try it. Lots of respect for Skuse as a writer.

But you know I recently unsubbed from Netflix because I felt it was funnelling serial killer content into my head. And this is a bit murderporny, just enough to cross a personal line.

This book was not what I thought it would be, but I really liked it. Told from the point of view of Rhiannon, a 20-something serial killer. I loved her voice. She was snarky and funny as she took us through her basic life, with murders thrown in. She was very likable, and I just found out there are 2 more books in the series. 5 stars

I consumed these both as audiobooks this week. They are coincidentally narrated by the same person, but could not be more different. Sweetpea is darkly humorous, with a main character who is sort of Bridget Jones meets Dexter Morgan. Not one for the faint-hearted. The Cornish Guest House looks like a frothy read, but it‘s themes of domestic abuse/coercion and scamming of the vulnerable belie its placid cover

Mehso-so

Sooooo.... this wasn't bad, I just found the main character to be inconsistently portrayed for the sake of making the storyline more twisted.

Kind of liked the ending, so still might pick up the next book.

Rhiannon is kind of like if Bridget Jones had massive trauma to her ventromedial prefrontal cortex; a raunchy, foul-mouthed, funny, diary-keeping, promiscuous, brutal psychopath with poor impulse control who keeps finding herself in mishaps (ie becomes a serial killer). I really enjoyed this book, but if CJ Scuse had left out one or two descriptions of what was happening in Rhiannon‘s panties, that would‘ve been cool.

TorieStorieS This book literally just came in the mail to me yesterday!!! 6y
whatsthEStorey @TorieStorieS I hope you enjoy it! It is dark, funny, and graphic. Very escapist. I thought it was great fun! 6y
TorieStorieS I actually bought it as sort of a joke- my aunt has called me Sweetpea my whole life so I saw the cover and sent it to her... she didn‘t think it was as funny as I did! 🤷‍♀️ 6y
whatsthEStorey 😂😂 That‘s also much funnier given how messed up this book is! @TorieStorieS 6y

I devoured this book. A female serial killer with a smart-lipped LOL mouth, absolutely! Not for everyone though, as it is pretty brutal at times, language and events, but I love it. 🌠🌠🌠🌠🌠

C J Skuse‘s black comedy thriller (the first in a trilogy) is a shockingly entertaining and sweary read with Skuse making you root for the damaged and homicidal Rhiannon while at the same time being horrified by some of her actions. I did find some of the support Rhiannon gets a little difficult to believe and there were a couple of moments where the pace was slow but it‘s an entertaining read with a great cliff hanger and I‘ll be reading on.

I had Sweetpea recommended to me by a friend who is a fellow audiobook lover. It is not at all what I expected it to be and I love it all the more for that. This book is dark and brutal, but also incredibly funny. This is not a book I‘d recommend to everyone, I imagine it would offend quite a few, but I am one of those that have thoroughly enjoyed being shocked and entertained by this twisted read. #sweetpea #cjskuse

Bronte_Chintz @jouleian So much love for this! I really didn‘t know how it could end...... just as brutally as it started apparently 😂😂👌🏻👍🏻💖 6y

I got about 1/3 in. And at times an excellent satire on how we can never understand the horror of what another may go through ( the interview ). The lighter humour was funny. But on the whole the humour was too dark & graphic for me. Not for me.

Finally getting a chance to listen ... so I have to say it‘s a bit too graphic for me. But , I‘m reading on ( I don‘t know how far I‘ll get ) , because there‘s something about Rhiannon ... I like her ...but she is fairly unstable ... to say the least , 😱 narrator is excellent .. 🎧

Ho, ly, $h!t... this book was vulgar. And for someone like me it fit better than Cinderella's glass slipper. It was an amazing dark comedy with a totally unexpected cliff hanging ending. I loved it. This book isn't for everyone. But it was definitely for me ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I think I‘ve more or less given the game away in my blurbs about this book. It‘s a belter. Violent and filthy and constantly funny. Think "Bridget Jones's Diary” but with twisted bitterness. Oh and with knives too. Not for the squeamish. Read it. I dares ya.

I think this is now my favourite book in the history of the entire expanse of time itself or at least since I signed up for that course on “Teach Yourself How To Get Carried Away By Stuff". I think me and Rhiannon would be best mates and she would hardly ever do bad things to my thumbs. I ?? Rhiannon.

This book was funny, crass, gory, moving and riveting! Rhiannon is a fascinating character who you can relate to on so many levels, except the murdering people part! The book‘s written like a diary and so many things she comes out with are funny or shocking but so like real life! My only gripe is that the flowers on the front aren‘t sweet peas!

Started this today and am already shocked and amused in equal measure. Rhiannon doesn‘t hold back in speaking her mind or committing murder, but she is pretty funny! I think this book might be a bit like the Dexter books where I‘ll be rooting for the ‘baddie‘

There is only so much I can read of a serial killer's diary before it's just too much. The snark quotient is high but even dark humor cannot save you from the creepy feeling of looking into a killer sociopath's mind, even if it's fictional. Kudos to the writer for capturing it so well — though to be honest that in itself is a little creepy as well 😳
