This was a very odd book!
3.5/5

Time for a creepy book while having a cappuccino and an egg and cheese on a cheddar chive biscuit before running some errands.
Enjoying this early fall day with my first PSL of the season, an egg and cheese on a cheddar chive biscuit, and staring another T. Kingfisher while sitting in a sunny spot of a favorite cafe
I just couldn‘t get into this one! I wanted to so badly. I don‘t know if it‘s just not my jam or if I just need to revisit at another time.
Ok. This is my first T. Kingfisher novel and I just started it. Am I the only one annoyed by the beginning. The conversational, not so subtle foreshadowing, and the cliche narration from a typewriter? Or am I just having PMS? 🤣
“And I twisted myself about like the twisted ones.“
I guess this line will stay in my head for a long time 😅 this book was pretty creepy.

Loved this twisted horror novel. So creepy! This author always gets pretty bizarre but in all the best ways. Cleaning out a hoarded, deceased family member's house in the middle of nowhere would be a big NO for me.
LOVED this and blew through it in just a few days!
The main character is definitely my kind of funny. I found myself chuckling every regularly throughout as well as being terrified, what a combo! This definitely made my nightly breastfeeding trips to the nursery creepy. Try not looking in the small closet that leads to the attic and has no door and not think of your current horror novel. I challenge you.
This is a downright disturbing and deliciously atmospheric work of folkhorror, from hoarder‘s house to haunted woods, narrated with unexpected humor by a woman who just wants to keep her dumb dog safe. What I didn‘t know until the very end is that this book is inspired by a 1904 classic horror short story by Arthur Machen, and while you can definitely enjoy this book without knowing the story, I felt like I was missing something once I knew!
Holy scary book!
I actually stopped reading this one before bed because it was legit giving me nightmares when I took my sleepy meds!
Such a great story and writing. Keeps the horror fun 😊
Genuine scares as well as moments of absolute hilarity. Loved this book
This book ended up being a lot better than I thought it would. It pulls you in and you just have to read the next page to find out what‘s gonna happen. When Melissa goes to clean her deceased grandmas house she‘s expecting a quick in and our type of job. Turns out grandma is a hoarder, the deceased step grandpa was into supernatural things, and Melissa has to figure it all out. It‘s much better than I‘m describing it. Not very good at these.
This horror rural horror novel was a good mix of creepy and snarky. The effigies were creative and genuinely scary and the main character had just the right amount of sarcasm. The goofy, sweet hound took center stage and was my favorite part.
Completely forgot I haven‘t finished this! My #10thBookOf2021 for #October was this twisted horror perfect for the Halloween season. Set in America‘s south, it‘s a atmospheric thriller about being alone in a hoarders house under siege by something not human. Mouse promised her Dad she‘d clear her mean deceased gran‘s house, no one told her it was full of creepy junk & not to go into the woods alone. Made me check the windows😱 #12BooksOf2021
Mouse is cleaning out her grandma's house (with her dog) and every night there is a tap, tap, tap on the windows. She stumbles upon her step grandpa's journal and must decide if it's just the writings of an old man who is losing his mind or something more sinister. It's definitely the second one.

1. Thrillers & Horror are my favorites of the listed.
2. Tagged was my most recent spooky read, it was fun and unique.
Just finished this strangely funny, scary fae horror story. It was very entertaining and a quick read. There is also a very good dog - see comments for mild spoiler there. 4⭐️ This will give me another #bookspinbingo ! +15 + 1 for #teamhendrix

This one's a little too bizarre to be scary to me, and the ending isn't to my liking (too frenetic combined with too much explanation). Also, the North Carolina setting doesn't feel much like North Carolina to me, which I find disappointing. (It doesn't NOT feel like NC, it just doesn't feel like much of anywhere.) I quite enjoyed about the first 2/3, though, so there's that.
Interesting book. I enjoyed the “things in the woods” trope, and I love dogs. Always appreciate a dog. And the inclusion of the diary from The White People by Arthur Machen was fun, though…kind of weird. The story didn‘t take me where I thought it would go, but I liked the humor throughout and the few parts that were actually spooky.
Today‘s #LittensDressedinBlood prompt:
Super Freak
This one is part of my October TBR and I think fits this prompt.
This week's #WednesdayTradition features The Twisted Ones by T. Kingfisher and iced coffee because the protagonist has reheated hers a bunch of times when really iced is the way to go).

I loved this!! It‘s told in first person, and the voice is so authentic and engaging. The humor is natural and easy—I even laughed out loud a few times! I thought the pacing was great, and the monsters were creepy as hell! Anyway, I loved the feeling of being in this adventure with people I really liked—I felt really invested. If you‘re looking for a creepy story with extremely likable characters and the best coonhound EVER, look no further! 😁
Morning reading. My feelings exactly, Mr. Spooky Mug.
I read The Hollow Places prior to reading the tagged book and I loved it. I expected this book to be similar to that. It is not. While I wouldn't say I'm disappointed, I'm definitely underwhelmed. I expected something atmospherically creepy, instead I got something less. The story is okay the MC Mouse is weird. Bongo and Foxy were the most enjoyable characters. The storyline is slow. I didn't not like it; I think my expectations were too high.
This book is taking me significantly longer to read than The Hollow Places did. I'm not sure what it is about this one that isn't keeping my attention.
"I made faces like the faces on the rocks, and I twisted myself about like the twisted ones, and I lay down flat on the ground like the dead ones."
Woah. ?
Reading in the car while my husband does some errands. This is what passes as an outing these days 😅
I am going to try to start at the beginning, even though I know you won't believe me.
#firstlinefridays
This book started out well. It was spooky and I was thinking it was a good ghost story or haunted house but by the middle it lost steam. It was me reading about a woman who was reading a very long manuscript 🤦🏾♀️. It went along at a snails pace and I ended up skipping most of the middle. A sneaky tactic pulled me back in and..now it turned into a Lovecraftian story? This book was all over the place and not scary-more of a fantasy than horror.
12-15-20: My 107th finished book of 2020! This one was very weird. Mouse and her dog, Bongo, travel to North Carolina, to empty out her deceased grandmother‘s home. Not only are they met with a hoarding situation, there is something going on in the woods...It‘s horror but the narrator is funny which saved this one for me. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ #thetwistedones #tkingfisher 👍🏼📖#️⃣1️⃣0️⃣7️⃣
What a different take on horror. I liked the more self aware and sarcastic protagonist. But this one failed on the creepiness and atmospheric level.
This folk horror novel unnerved me to the point where I lay awake at night, unable to get some of the visuals out of my mind. This book's effect on me is remarkable because it is almost gore-less. The fear for me lay in the palatable sense of impending threat, the mystery, and the atmosphere. I also cared deeply about the characters. Tough, smart women who take care of themselves and a dog whom we know from the beginning makes it out alive!! YAY!
This was just soooo deliciously creepy! Thank you for picking it out for me @xxjenadanxx - I loved it!
(I think I would have read it in a single sitting, but I could only read it during daylight hours or I got too creeped out 🤣🤣)
@TheAromaofBooks this is my November #bookspin title
Ready enjoying this spooky read from @xxjenadanxx tonight! It's not too scary with these brave protectors... 😻 #catsoflitsy
@xxjenadanxx Thank you so, so much! I have actually never heard of this book, but it sounds fantastic and I can't wait to read it! And I'm not sure how you knew that The Shining was my all-time favorite scary movie, but this bookmark is perfect! Now excuse me while I start my book and devour all my treats before the tiny humans can see them 😊
#allhallowsreadswap @MaleficentBookDragon
Another impressive #scarathalon read! For my tastes, this was the perfect horror book up until the last 100 pages--folky and atmospheric with slow, gradual reveals that keep things mysterious until necessary. I wasn't a fan of the conclusion, but still worthy of a strong pick since I'm so picky with this genre! #thrilloween #gothtober @Clwojick
Between a PICK and a SO-SO. All I can say is it's definitely on the freaky side. Seriously...deer effigies, creepy dolls, and disappearing hills are just a few of the elements you'll find within this story...if you're a fan of the weird and unexplained this might be perfect for you.
