Ann Cleeves has rock solid craftsmanship. This was a very satisfying and well executed read. But where as the Vera books are often A's for me, I would rate this as a B. I think it is really interesting to have a character who is recovering from a intensely religious childhood and being shunned as a young adult. But he simply doesn't have the vividness of Vera. Still went on to read and enjoy the next two books in the series.

Not as gritty as the other books by this author I've read, but there are some interesting characters I'd like to see more of.

The first book in Cleeves‘ new series, when a body is found on the same day as Matthew Venn‘s father funeral the two events force him to unexpectedly deal with his past. The mystery was solid and filled with interesting characters. After being a little more lukewarm about Vera than most seem to be I really liked Venn and am excited to read more in this series.

I watched the series and loved it but wanted to listen to the book before going on to the second in the series. Ben Aldridge narrates and he gave a wonderful performance!

I‘ve been struggling with some depression lately due to a breakup and this is the first book I‘ve finished in almost a month. It felt nice to throw myself back into a book. I really enjoyed this one and I‘m ready to watch the show on BritBox. I can‘t wait to read the second one because I‘m sure it will be just as good!

Binge-Watched all 4 episodes of The Long Call on Brit Box and loved it! Devon location was stunning. Yes there were some changes from Ann Cleeves book but the heart of the story is there. So wonderful to see a happily married gay couple on tv. Hope there is a Season 2. 📖------>📺

Discovered this series is coming to Britbox soon so had to quickly get my read in first. 🤓 Cleeves‘ series are perfect for chilly, fall days because they feel like being enveloped in a big, cozy sweater. I was in the mood for a crime novel so I thought I'd try Ann Cleeves new series. It was a good choice - decent writing, interesting characters and a satisfying mystery. Think I'll read the next one now.

This was the first book I could get as an ebook from the library. Apparently a new series.

I think the reason this books speaks to me is because Ann Cleeves has perfectly captured what it's like to leave a cult. Whether you get out by shouting to world or quietly drifting away, it's a struggle. Reading helped to open my eyes to what was wrong with the way I was raised. Wonderful to read a Character like Matthew Venn who has made life for himself. It is possible. And I have to say freedom feels Damn Good. 💙💙💙💙💙

Rereading before 2nd Book comes out in September. Previously read in Print. This time I'm listening to Audiobook which is read by actor that is playing Detective Matthew Venn in new tv show. Has a lovely voice. 😍

This was an interesting book in a new series by Ann Cleeves. A great new character introduced, alongside some other interesting characters, and a murdered body found on a North Devon beach. A really enjoyable read which happy to recommend to others.

Day 2 of #AwesomeAugust Readathon and I‘m hoping to finish The Long Call which I am 24% through. So far finished 1 book (out of a target of 12).

Love, love, love this book! As usual with this author, a multilayered mystery that kept me guessing until the end. A new detective and the beginning of a new series, and I intend to keep following. Great characters, evocative setting (and an area I visited on my last trip to England, which was a plus). Picture is from Lynton and Lynmouth, near where the story is set. 4🌟

I haven‘t finished my current read, but a Kindle deal on a new Ann Cleeves series, and I can‘t resist. Especially since it‘s set in North Devon, and I‘ve been there. Only a few pages in, but I‘m hooked.

Really enjoyed this one and am pleased it's the first in a new series. As well as the Devon coast, which is always delightful even in prose, the sensitive treatment of disabilities was a highlight. I have no experience of whether the portrayal of middle aged women with Down's syndrome was realistic but I hope it was as it felt very genuine. Loved Vera Stanhope series and now am hooked on new Detective Matthew Venn.
This intriguing plot, wild landscape scenes and very real complex characters won‘t disappoint you.

This was my first read in August and I flew through it! It is a new series by Ann Cleeved and I loved it. It features DI Matthew Venn and is set in and around Devon I think. I guess time will tell if it will be made into a tv show like the others! #books

I picked this up at a second hand book store, in very good condition. I loved the Shetland series so much, but somehow never got in the Vera series. So I will give this new series a chance. I will take it to Scotland and pass it on to my dad afterwards. #tbr

I loved this book, which is first in a new series. British murder mystery/police procedural that is heavy on character studies. It wasn‘t perfect, but the main detective is an awkward, unsure of himself, patient and kind man who happens to be gay with a religious cult upbringing. How‘s that for breaking with the moody/loner/alcoholic detective trope! Unrelated, I might have built a playhouse for #Klaus out of an ikea box. #catsoflitsy #petsoflitsy

My first Ann Cleeves and I can see why she‘s so popular. Might be my new go to author when I‘m in the mood for a not-quite-cosy mystery.

A little more review of the book. 451 characters not enough🙂 Matthew Venn is a very likable detective, his main staff of Jen and Ross have lots of potential. They are still learning to work together. I'm really looking forward to seeing their development. I also am enjoying learning of another beautiful part of England.

The Long Call by Ann Cleeves is the first in a new series of Defective Matthew Venn. It holds up well to her Vera and Shetland series. It takes place inDevon England. It is well described, I felt like I was there, smelling the sea hearing the birds, seeing small town life. The mystery involves a murdered man who had links to a care center for mentally disabled adults, an evangelical community that Venn had ties to.
The plot is good.I recommend it

A good start, a new series by Ann Cleeves. I enjoyed it, although I‘m waiting to see where this series will take us. The main character is a gay peeler with a religious sect like background. He‘s a bit awkward and asocial, but I can see a lot of potential for a good series. In the first book a man is found dead, and then a woman with Down syndrome is kidnapped. What is going on? Find out by reading the book!
