The Death of Vishnu
The Death of Vishnu | Manil Suri
9 posts | 17 read | 13 to read
Vishnu, the odd-job man in a Bombay apartment block, lies dying on the staircase landing. Around him the lives of the apartment dwellers unfold - the warring housewives on the first floor, the lovesick teenagers on the second, and the widower, alone and quietly grieving at the top of the building. In a fevered state Vishnu looks back on his love affair with the seductive Padmini and comedy becomes tragedy as his life draws to a close.

An unforgettable book of fascinating characters and setting. Vishnu is dying on the landing of a small apartment building, where he has lived running odd jobs. Other homeless live on other landings. We experience his memories as he lies dying & the turmoils of the 4 families who live there for whom his death is primarily an inconvenience. Some beautiful writing in here, insightful and moving scenes - and a sad indictment of human pettiness ⬇️

TrishB That sounds really sad! 3y
Centique @TrishB there‘s humour in there as well thankfully - Vishnu is a bit of a mischief 😋 3y

I had the great privilege of traveling to India twice. The pictures are from my Trip to Mysuru and a book shops in Bengaluru.

1. The Death of Vishnu by Manil Suri
2. The Age of Shiva by Manil Suri, A Good Indian wife by Anne Cherian, The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri
3. Yes, I ❤️Indian food.

#ManicMonday - Letter D:

🌱 The Death of Vishnu by Manil Siri
🌱 David Anthony Durham / Anthony Doerr
🌱 First thought was Disturbia (I love that movie) but then I recalled Dead Poet‘s Society (that movie‘s brilliancy is undeniable)
🌱 Neo-soul music from D‘Angelo / Might get some sideways glances but I‘m down with Dolly Parton!
🌱 Dear Mama by Tupac

Thanks for the tag @Ruthiella - this was fun!

Ruthiella Great list! 😀 5y
AmyG D‘Angelo. Good choice. 5y
JoScho Thanks so much for playing 🤗💚 5y

Come-read-with-me Dear Mama is a song I love. ❤️ 5y
Nute @Ruthiella Thank you! 5y
Nute @AmyG I was happy when D‘Angelo was able to rise above the grip of drugs and alcohol addiction and to regain his confidence as a performer. His voice is exquisite and his song-writing for Neo-Soul along with Erykah Badu and Jill Scott...OMG! 5y
Nute @JoScho Always FUN!💕 5y
Nute @Come-read-with-me 🎼Dear Mama, You are appreciated!🎶 What mother wouldn‘t want to know those words, wouldn‘t want to feel that her maturing children come to respect and value her efforts and sacrifices on their behalf just because she is their mother! I love that song too!💕 5y
AshleyHoss820 Some excellent choices! I know it sounds weird, but Tupac is my comfort listening. And Dead Poets Society is amazing! 5y

Vibrant cover and fabulous font ruined by that awful price tag that cannot be removed without ruining the cover 🙄 #forfontssake #AndItsAugust @RealLifeReading

readordierachel Love that cover! If you have a little lighter fluid and something sharp, you can often scrape away sticker without harming the book. 7y
batsy @ReadOrDieRachel I don't at the moment, but that is useful info to have. Thank you, will give it a try coz it really bugs me 🙈 7y
LeahBergen It looks like an old Bollywood poster. Love it! 7y

#aprilbookshowers day 11, #southeastasia I read it a few years ago, but I remember The Death of Vishnu being a lyrical portrayal of the lives of several family members in a Bombay apartment building.

This story was amazing. The cast of characters that float around the dying Vishnu is so mesmerizing I couldn't put it down.
