Anne of Ingleside
Anne of Ingleside | L.M. Montgomery
A favorite of everyone from Mark Twain to Duchess Kate There's never a dull moment in the life of wonderful, whimsical Anne. The adoring mother of five lively childrenwith a baby on the way!Anne's life is full to bursting. And that's before the overbearing Aunt Mary Maria arrives for a lengthy visit... Still, there's nowhere Annie would rather be than her own beloved Ingleside in the adoring arms of her husband, Gilbert. Life with her imaginative, adventurous children seems close to perfect until Anne begins to worry that her very busy doctor doesn't love her anymore. She may be a little older, but she's still the same irrepressible, irreplaceable Anne of Green Gablesand she's ready to make her darling husband fall in love with her all over again! Anne Shirley once said, "Dear old world, you are very lovely, and I am glad to be alive in you." That sentiment is echoed by readers around the world who've fallen in love with this remarkable heroine. This new edition lovingly restores the original, unabridged text and includes an all-new, exclusive introduction with special memories from L.M. Montgomery's granddaughter.

Reading this as a girl I remember being charmed by the idea of having lots of kids, but now I just kept thinking 6 children is WAY too many children 😂

Tamra 😵‍💫It would require a rethinking of how I run a household. 8mo
lil1inblue When I first met my mother-in-law (who had 4 sons), she told me she always thought my husband would giver her the most grandkids - like 6 or 7. I was terrified. Ironically, we are now child free by choice, but have 7 nieces and nephews on that side. 😂 8mo

A low pick. The children all kind of blurred together and there were at least three frustrating times when the characters or narrator made negative comments about how fat someone was. Still, I enjoyed characters from previous books making appearances here. My favorite part was when I got to Rilla and the cake and suddenly remembered my sister reading that part aloud to me when I was a kid. I could hear her in my mind saying, "burnt to a crithp!"

It pains me to give one of the books about Anne a so-so rating, but this is by far the weakest of the books I‘ve read so far.

This doesn‘t feel like a book about Anne, but a book about her children. They each get some chapters each.

#KindredSpiritsBuddyRead

BarbaraJean I very much agree! It‘s so scattered and unfocused. There are some nice glimpses of Anne here and there, but that‘s all. 4y

5a. What are your thoughts on the opening and closing chapters of this book: Anne's visit to Avonlea and her picnic with Diana at the beginning of the book, and the dinner with Christine at the end?

5b. Why do you think Montgomery chose to begin and end the book in the ways she did?

5c. Any final thoughts on the book? Any impressions that will stay with you (good or bad!)?

#KindredSpiritsBuddyRead

Bkwrm7 This was the last one Montgomery wrote and it was in response to requests for more Anne which sort of makes me understand the bookending with references to other books and past events. One of the things that strikes me this re-read is how none of the children seem to be named after Gilbert's relatives and how that illustrates how underdeveloped he really is as a character throughout the series. 4y
LeahBergen @Bkwrm7 That‘s right. The final chapter certainly felt like a a summing up of the series and there is almost a tone of ‘farewell‘ in the author‘s voice. 4y
BarbaraJean @Bkwrm7 Absolutely - the beginning & end felt like a nod to fans: “Have some Avonlea! And remember Christine?“ The final chapters felt forced to me, like LMM was trying to insert some last-minute drama through Anne's anxiety over Christine. @LeahBergen I agree, the final chapter did have a summing-up feel, but it felt a little tacked-on to me. There's a similar feel to the end of House of Dreams, but it seems more organic there. 4y
See All 6 Comments
quietjenn The Christine thing felt super weird and it of character to me. Like, come on, Anne. You know Gilbert never really liked Christine, so why this obsessing over her now? I guess we now know that even Anne is subject to middle aged anxiety and marriage doldrums, but ... ok? It's certainly not the most satisfying book. I didn't hate it, but it does feel very "for completists only." 4y
BarbaraJean @quietjenn I know, the Christine thing came out of the blue and didn't feel like Anne at all. I understood her being upset about going to a dinner with Christine on a wedding anniversary that Gilbert seemed to have forgotten (poor form, Gilbert!). I could have even accepted Anne's obsessing about Christine and dredging up super minor incidents from the past if there had been SOME lead-up to it. But it was just a random episode! 4y
AnneCecilie I loved the beginning with Diana. A reminder to how things was. I didn‘t much care about the Christine storyline. To me this felt like a Anne book with hardly any Anne in it. This book to me is more about her children and as far as I can tell it also takes place over a longer timeframe than the previous Anne books. 4y

“'I've been asking Him something for twenty years,' bitterly said Mrs. Bruce Duncan… A brief hush fell over the circle. They could all guess what she had asked for…but it was not a thing to be discussed at a quilting.“

4: I have to ask: What do you think Mrs. Bruce Duncan has been asking God for twenty years? I'm SO curious what the quilting circle was guessing, and we are given no clues!

#KindredSpiritsBuddyRead

rubyslippersreads I haven‘t read the book in years, but could it be either a baby, or perhaps a faithful husband? 4y
BarbaraJean @rubyslippersreads I was thinking it might have something to do with her husband as well. There's another story alluded to during the conversation, of an awful, cruel, and controlling husband. So the parallel would make sense. 4y
LeahBergen @rubyslippersreads I initially thought a baby but changed my mind after hearing more of the “racier” stories they told at this quilting circle. Maybe she wanted her husband killed off. 😆😆 4y

3A: We are told that Di looks like Anne, but favors her father in personality. Where do you see parallels between Anne‘s personality and the personalities of her children?

3B: What do you think of Anne as a mother? Are there moments that stand out to you from her conversations with her children?

#KindredSpiritsBuddyRead

Bkwrm7 3A: Walter seems the most like Anne to me with his fancies, dreaminess and gift for naming places. 3B: Anne seems almost too perfect a mother - never laughing at the children and always taking them seriously and knowing what wise thing to say (except for the last story when she's out of sorts). She definitely is a little more concerned with the "right kind of friends" for her kids than I would have expected given her history though. 4y
BarbaraJean @Bkwrm7 Yes, I was bothered by some of the comments from both Susan and Anne about certain friends being “suitable“ or not based on what seemed like class and wealth considerations, rather than character or personality. And the Jenny Penny story seemed to reinforce the low class = bad character theme. 4y
quietjenn I do think a bit of Anne comes out in then in different ways, be it a dreaminess and an appreciation of nature or a propensity to get into well-meaning scrapes. I do think she's pretty idealized as a mother and there were times I found myself a little impatient with that. 4y
See All 6 Comments
Jerdencon I do like how Anne deals with her children and their crises - she‘s level headed but able to I understand them. 4y
AnneCecilie Her kids seems to love nature and to be able to make up stories. They also take in a stray cat like Anne did in a previous book. Anne seemed like a great mother to me and able to take her kids problems seriously 4y
BarbaraJean @Jerdencon @AnneCecilie I really loved the way she took her children seriously and understood their concerns even when they seemed minor (like poor Rilla and the cake!). I felt like Anne remembered a lot of what she had needed as a child and put it into practice as a mother. 4y

We‘re introduced to Anne‘s children in this book—with a large portion of the book being filled with little 2-chapter stories focusing on one child or another.
2A: Which of the Blythe children are you most drawn to? Why?
2B: What was your favorite Blythe child escapade?

#KindredSpiritsBuddyRead

Bkwrm7 2A: Rilla and Walter are my favorites. 2B: The story about Rilla and the cake gets my vote for tops from this collection. 4y
LeahBergen Hmm... I have a fondness for Di and Nan for some reason. But what happened to poor Shirley? 😆 4y
BarbaraJean @Bkwrm7 I loved the Rilla and the cake story! I love Walter because of the similarities to Anne, with his daydreaming and his appreciation of beauty in nature. @LeahBergen I also really loved Nan--I think partly because of how hard she tries to make it right when she thinks she was switched at birth! I also love the story about Nan's bargains with God. There's something about her childhood logic in both of those stories that resonates with me. 4y
See All 8 Comments
quietjenn Honestly, when the book isn't in front of me, I have difficulty keeping the kids straight and remembering which escapade went with which child 😬 4y
BarbaraJean @quietjenn 😂 I could NOT keep the twins straight. I kept having to flip back to figure out which one of them was supposed to look like Anne. 4y
Jerdencon @quietjenn I totally agree with you - what sticks out is whoever was going to walk through the graveyard at night.. but that was it. 4y
AnneCecilie I have problems with keeping her children apart, but I really loved the story about Walter buying his mother the pearl necklace. 4y
BarbaraJean @AnneCecilie Yes, the necklace story was lovely! And his response when he found out they weren't real pearls, and their conversation about it, was so sweet. 4y

Here we go with our Anne of Ingleside discussion! Kindred Spirits, I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

1. I read a review of Anne of Ingleside that mentioned the “LMM Curse”—the idea that all the even-numbered books in the series are disappointing (Avonlea, Windy Poplars, Ingleside). Do you agree? Where does this one fall in the rankings for you?

#KindredSpiritsBuddyRead

BarbaraJean My personal theory is that if you're not interested in reading the whole series, you can stop after any of the odd-numbered books (Green Gables, Island, House of Dreams)—and so I‘m inclined to agree! I mean, if you read Avonlea, you MUST go on to Island. And if you read Windy Poplars, you MUST read House of Dreams. But I never urge people to make sure they get to Ingleside! 4y
Bkwrm7 I would disagree with the even-numbered curse based on Anne of Avonlea and Rilla of Ingleside. I like Anne of Avonlea pretty well and Rilla of Ingleside is in my top 3 of the series; Rilla might even be my favorite! Anne of Ingleside is fine; definitely not in my favorites of the series although I was surprised by how much I remembered! Some of the friendship stories centered on Nan and Di seemed particularly repetitive. 4y
LeahBergen That‘s so interesting and I‘m inclined to agree with it. Although I seem to like Windy Poplars more than others do. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4y
See All 9 Comments
BarbaraJean @Bkwrm7 I definitely agree about Rilla being an exception! I remembered liking Anne of Avonlea more than I did when I re-read it this time, though. And like @LeahBergen, I do really like Windy Poplars (well, the first 2/3). 4y
EclecticBookLover I don't agree the even numbers are the worst, but this is definitely my least favorite. I struggled with it and still haven't finished it 😬. I hope the me t one gets back on track. 4y
jewright Rilla of Ingleside is one of my absolute favorite books. 4y
quietjenn While I can concede that they're generally weaker, it's pretty relative for me. But like @EclecticBookLover this one is for sure my least favorite. 4y
Jerdencon I hadn‘t heard that but would probably agree this is one of my least favorites - it‘s just random stories of the children - although the end kind of redeemed it a little bit. 4y
AnneCecilie I haven‘t heard about the curse, and I‘m not sure I agree. But this book was definitely the weakest Anne book for me. 4y

Well. Not my favorite Anne book. I do enjoy getting introduced to the personalities of Jem, Walter, Di, and Nan...and a little bit of Rilla. (But what happened to Shirley?!) And there are some lovely glimpses of Anne as a mother. But overall, it's awfully uneven. Unconnected episodes, a lot of frustrating side characters (don‘t get me started on Aunt Mary Maria), and I missed the characters from House of Dreams terribly. #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead

LeahBergen Yes! Where was Shirley? And I agree about House of Dreams. I was surprised by how much I liked it on this reread! 4y

Here we are with the last couple weeks in the Anne of Ingleside #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead. I have to admit, I'm losing steam on this one. I know now why I remember so little about this book... it's so unfocused & uneven. There are a few little gems here and there, and I like seeing the little glimpses we get into the older children's personalities. But I'm ready to finish it up and move on to Rainbow Valley! How is everyone else doing?

Jerdencon I totally agree with you - there is almost no plot - just little stories...I‘m ready to move on to the next one but will finish this one out since I never read it before. 4y
quietjenn Definitely haven't kept up with chapter a day. It's ... fine when I read it, but there's little motivation and it feels a bit lacking in the oomph or magic. 4y

Here's the next bit of the schedule for the #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead! How's everyone's reading going? What are your thoughts on Ingleside? I'm finding it as expected: not nearly as enjoyable as the previous books. It doesn't have that same Anne flavor, and I'm missing all the beloved House of Dreams characters. However, Susan Baker is growing on me. I didn't like her much in House of Dreams, but here, her comments on Aunt Mary Maria are 💯.

EclecticBookLover This one does feel different than the others, but im still enjoying it. Aunt Mary Maria, though...🙄 4y

AnneCecilie I‘m on track, but I‘m not enjoying this one as much as the other ones 4y
Jerdencon I‘m on track too but kind of skimming this one. I feel like not much is happening. 4y
BarbaraJean @EclecticBookLover Seriously—I have rarely been so glad to see a character exit! 4y
BarbaraJean @bibliobliss I know how that goes! And Windy Poplars does drag a bit in the middle—it‘s so episodic. Glad you‘re planning to continue the series, though! 4y
BarbaraJean @quietjenn @AnneCecilie @Jerdencon It really feels like just an “okay” installment in the series. I think it‘s also hard to follow up House of Dreams, at least for me—I love book 5 so much! 4y
BarbaraJean @Clare-Dragonfly Totally understand. I was more bothered by the way this book handled the pregnancy than I was by the vague pregnancy talk in the last book. I mean, it goes so far that Walter actually thinks Anne and Gilbert are getting rid of all the children. WHY can't they prepare the kids even a little?!? 4y
Jerdencon @BarbaraJean I totally agree - don‘t feel like much is happening here and I find myself sort of skimming along. 4y

I am SO DONE with the Aunt Mary Maria plot. As much as I‘d like to appreciate Anne‘s compassion here, I‘m annoyed at the little “moral of the story” we‘re offered as if to excuse the behavior of a disagreeable, manipulative (if lonely) woman. Here‘s the first part of the schedule for our Anne of Ingleside chapter-a-day buddy read. No chapter titles in this one! I have to admit, I remember little to nothing of this book. I‘ve re-read the first 5 books much more frequently than the rest, and I‘m pretty sure this one is not on my “greatest hits” list. But I‘m interested to revisit it, and am looking forward to seeing everyone‘s thoughts as we read and discuss! #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead

Hooked_on_books Enjoy the read, everyone! I actually noticed that this one and Windy Poplars were both written several decades after the other books. With WP, you could really tell (and not in a good way), which makes me wonder if the same will be the case with this one. 4y
BarbaraJean @Hooked_on_books I think you‘re probably right. I remember reading somewhere that Montgomery was tired of writing about Anne but fans wanted more books... and I‘m guessing WP and Ingleside were the results. Not a good recipe for great writing when the author is tired of the main character! 4y
LeahBergen I‘m looking forward to this one. I think I only read it once and that was when I was a young teen! 4y

Should‘ve been “A Bunch of Annoying Kids and Asshole Old Ladies of Ingleside.” I‘m gonna finish the series bc I bought it so I can‘t *not*, but oy, this was not good. As usual the setting & scenery are beautifully written, but that‘s about the only positive. Anne is barely there, no real plot, it‘s a series of vignettes w/the kids & rude women & meanness towards fat & poor people. And the synopsis is false advertising re: Anne & Gilbert. 2/5 ⭐️

I love the Anne books. This was August's book for the #HeyCarrots readalong, so you can also see how well I am doing with that goal!! I love Anne as a mother - it really struck me this time how careful she is to take her children seriously and not laugh at them - such an important ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks @EclecticBookLover - It's definitely a series worth reading. They can be a little old-fashioned, but that's part of their charm. 😊 4y

People do change over time. But it‘s amazing to see how a character develops in a book series. When you compare Mrs Lynde in Anne‘s book one to six, you can see an improvement but without the core alteration. Isn‘t it amazing?

I like this quote as well🥰

The last time I read Anne of Green Gables, I was the same age Anne was in Anne of Green Gables. How odd to now read about her again at the same age as I am but for it to be when she is grown and has a growing family. The chapters about the children were far more interesting and entertaining to me, even now as an adult. The ones about matchmaking and quilting and the like still feel dull.

And now I‘m caught up with #heycarrots!

quietjenn What a pretty edition! 4y

As a child, I wanted my mother to be like Anne. As a parent, I see how she influenced me. Small influences. I'm really not like Anne as a mom, that is an unattainable goal. Nevertheless, I am more like Anne than my mom.

I enjoyed how each of her children's personalities were developed in the book and I had forgotten that there was foreshadowing of Walter and WWI at the end of the book. So poignant.

Can't wait for Rainbow Valley.

I am going to really devote my time to #24b4monday this weekend. I don't think I am going to be able to get all my books. Still need to read for #NovelWatchingCrew (The Devil Wears Prada), #heycarrots (Anne of Ingleside), #NewberryChallenge (Criss Cross and ... and now Miguel), and #XSummer (Malcolm X)

ElizaMarie Good luck! 4y

#HeyCarrots I started the next Anne adventure today. I am enjoying it I just wish I could listen to the same narrator as the previous books. I'm not sure why this is the only book in the series that only has one option for narrator. @Flingogal @thegirlwiththelibrarybag

One of my favorites since the first one!

Seeing Anne thrive as a mother in her new community, and learning more about her children's personalities were both delightfully entertaining story lines in this wonderful continuation of Anne of Green Gables. 💚 Anne was not the main focus on this one, but her children made a great substitute.

This was more about Anne‘s 6 children than it was about Anne. I enjoyed it-Walter especially-but would have liked more Anne and Gilbert.

TheAromaofBooks Yes, sadly Anne fades out of her own series, but I still love this one a lot. 4y

#heycarrots! If you are up to it let‘s read this in August! No stress if you are not up to this book (I very much am not but I‘m optimistic!)

As always please tag me and @Flingogal in your reviews and observations! 🥕

Butterfinger Walter is one of my all-time favorite characters. I can't wait to read this and then Rilla. 4y
TheAromaofBooks I finally read Anne of the Island on Saturday, so I'm getting caught up... ish 😂 4y

One of the later additions to the Anne of Green Gables series. I enjoyed it, though it was more about Anne‘s children than Anne herself, and half of the back-cover summary is about how Anne worries Gilbert doesn‘t love her anymore, which is only covered in the last 2 chapters (out of 41) and seems more like a device to conclude with a happy flourish than a proper part of the plot. Had some lovely passages, as usual with Montgomery‘s writing. 6/10

“Well, that was life. Gladness and pain... hope and fear... and change. Always change! You could not help it. You had to let the old go and take the new to your heart... learn to love it and then let it go in turn. Spring, lovely as it was, must yield to summer and summer lose itself in autumn.”

I just love some of these beautiful and wise passages in the Anne books! They contrast well with the dreamy and spirited chapters about the children.

I was in a used bookstore and a man brought in a signed copy of Anne of Ingleside. Not for sale yet. They weren't even sure how much to charge. But I took a pic. Apparently signed copies of L.M. Montgomery books are rare.

wanderinglynn I was curious, so I googled it. Biblio has a signed 1st edition for $4,000. https://www.biblio.com/book/anne-ingleside-signed-montgomery-lm-lucy/d/340345566 5y
merelybookish @wanderinglynn yes they were googling that while I was there. This edition doesn't have a dust jacket, although I think the seller plans to find one. 5y

merelybookish @UwannaPublishme @batsy @krismlars @Leftcoastzen What's crazy is that it nearly got thrown out. The man had gone to a house to buy some other books. But this one was relegated to be tossed. 😧 5y
