Day 2 of my 5 day weekend and the toddler is off on a fun field trip with his day care today. I'm thinking about all the things I should be doing while I have a child free house today but for now House of the Dragon, coffee and my book are calling.

Happy Friday!!

While the boy plays quietly with Baby Shark I'm going to try and get a few pages in. I didn't continue with this series because I was waiting for the final book. I had no idea it's been released so now it's time for a refresher of book one before moving on and getting this series complete!

What a disappointment this turned out to be. I really wanted to love this book, but the repetitive nature of the storytelling, and the sheer stupidity of the characters just turned me off the whole thing. Not sure if I'm picking up the sequel. 😕

I actually enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. There were a few things that could have been fixed (like making it clear that Ana becomes a different person when using her magic instead of her going back and forth between hating it and reveling in it). But despite its flaws, Blood Heir was actually pretty interesting.

Just reading Blood Heir and hiding from the world.

Am I the only one who feels sad about the rioting? I mean, Floyd's death was a tragedy, but violence is never solved with violence. And a lot of people are taking advantage of others at this time.

This book is filled with lines like this-I am excited for the second in the trilogy to come later this fall. There were some twists I didn‘t see coming- Can‘t wait to see more of Ramson Quicktounge. Also, I know there was controversy around this story prepublication, but from my admittedly privileged position as a white woman, I thought Zhao fixed how the racism was delt with nicely.

I know some others have said that this is just another typical fantasy but this is everything I love about reading. I love losing myself in another world where the main character chooses to be strong and stand up for their beliefs. I love connecting with the characters and pretending for just a minute that it might be me on the page being a hero.

I didn‘t hate it, but didn‘t love it. Typical YA with not a lot of originality. I would‘ve liked to see some character arcs taken to a different place. Packed full with almost too much action that we didn‘t get enough character depth in my opinion. Still love the cover ðŸ˜

Bookish Song Nr. 5: Behind Blue Eyes

I never liked that song and actually, I still don't. But when it popped up on Deezer Shuffle, before I could hit skip, I suddenly was in the middle of the book. And the more I continued reading, the better it fitted.

LibrarianRyan I always thought that song was a mix match. It doesn‘t fell like limpbizcut I like it but it always depresses me. 5y

I started out with “This is an ok story. Typical YA.“.
Then it got to “The story gets more complex. I did not expect that!“
And then it come to “I really like this book!“

Especially the characters got more and more interesting and the more I listend to the audio book, the more I cared for them.

Now I wonder how the second book will turn out.

Still waiting on my preorder to get here. I think it got lost in the mail 😖 so I decided to toss on the audio while I worked. I had a sample of this before the whole controversy became a thing and really enjoyed it so I was beyond excited when it finally got published!
This is typical YA fantasy. No real surprises or anything special but the characters were easy to connect with and the story pulls you right in. I'll be waiting for the sequel

A Princess is said to be dead, but she really isn‘t and ran in a time of betrayal. She is looking a fugitive to help her. Once found, they go on a quest to find who killed her family. Once on the quest, they see first hand about slavery.
There is action, betrayal, treason, and great chemistry between the two main characters.

There's a lot about this book that I liked but it was absolutely not the narration of the audiobook. I made a conscious effort to disassociate the narrator from the content. I liked how dark this book was and it def didn't shy away from the murdery stuff. I liked the characters and politics and conflicts and trying to steal the throne games. I'll definitely pick up the sequel.

SassenachTheBookWizard also I went in aware that people were claiming this was racist towards African Americans. I was watching for that and I just don't see it. I am not a person of colour but I feel like I'm self aware and comprehend microaggressions. I'm thinking that the YA Twitter community has started confusing the existence of slavery in a book as racism and holding a North American-centric POV of everything...which is rather concerning and why I avoid YA Twitter 5y

Just killing time and trying desperately to finish this damn ARC. 😩

BookishTrish Is it any good? I am really curious after all the controversy 5y
LibrarianRyan ohhhhh. Is that an un retouched arc. I don't think they changed much after the controversy, but I would be curious. 5y
gibblr @BookishTrish I can deal with the controversial scenes, I can deal with the ripped off scene from Hunger Games (honestly don‘t know if I would‘ve noticed if I hadn‘t been told), all that is fine. However, the story is just not good. I feel like the same thing keeps repeating, and I don‘t understand some character motivation. Let‘s see if my opinion changes by the end. 5y
See All 8 Comments
gibblr @LibrarianRyan It is an original June 2019 ARC. I thought it was going to be so cool to have a book that was never going to be a book. Then it was going to be a book and I waited too long to read it and couldn‘t finish before pub date because I‘m not that impressed. (I don‘t have issues with the controversial stuff, I just don‘t think it‘s that good.) 5y
BookishTrish I‘ll pass then - thanks 5y

Sorry for my break.

I am SO Glad this is back. I was so disappointed when this was pulled for “controversies“ over an #Ownvoice author seeming to write from a different perspective. I am glad it is now officially being printed, and last I read they didn't change much if anything. (I could be wrong about that). This was one of my favorite covers of the spring. I can not wait to get my hands on this book.

Wow! Interesting article in The Guardian. I take issue with the part about YA starting with Harry Potter, but that‘s totally aside from the main point, which has to do with #ownvoices :

LiterRohde I had heard nothing of this, so I did a little research. And it angers me that she is basically being told her story, her experience, doesn‘t matter. Is there really a culture/group that has cornered the market on oppression, so as to say no one else can write about the subject? I‘m really tired of this us against them mentality. (edited) 6y
LiterRohde And it‘s not my go-to genre (hence, one of the reasons I did not know of the controversy - that, and I try to avoid this type of news since there seems to be so much of it and I can‘t deal anymore), but it looks like it could be a really good book. (edited) 6y
imabusybee I saw this on Twitter and my thoughts were if people didnt like the content of her book they dont need to read it... 6y
LiterRohde @imabusybee Agreed. You don‘t like something, you don‘t buy it, read it, shop there. If someone is so heinous in their views and policies as a business, market forces will get rid of them. 6y
Tonton WTF 6y
LibrarianRyan @LiterRohde I didn‘t realize I‘d been seeing it all week on Twitter. No names or titles or anything were mentioned until I saw the letter. Most of the reviews seem good. Some mention problematic parts but the big fuss seems to be coming from those who haven‘t read it 6y
LiterRohde @LibrarianRyan That also upsets me as a trend. If you are involved in informed protest, great. It‘s one of the things that makes this country a great place to be. But so many people don‘t know why they are protesting. “I heard this person was this or that...†Ugh. (edited) 6y
LiterRohde There is a book that has really good ratings and reviews on Litsy (91%) whose main premise is love between a man in his mid-twenties and a twelve-year-old girl. Some very sexual scenes. It‘s lauded as this beautiful romance. I find the whole idea repulsive. But she got to write her story (based in personal experience). I would not tell her her experience was wrong, I just won‘t buy her book. And I would not tell you not to read it. (edited) 6y
LibrarianRyan @LiterRohde I completely get it and agree. I never bought 50 shades. I think for me after reading tons of reviews and twitter to figure out what is going on, is that it‘s authors doing this to other authors. And they are hitting at the author, the publisher, and her agent. This is the second time three has been an uproar of a YA fantasy on Twitter that spread wide. The continent never recovered. It went from hotly anticipated to black listed 6y
LibrarianRyan @LiterRohde and even after it went through “sensitivity†readers, it never regained its original momentum. I also find it intriguing how it‘s always a YA book. 6y
LiterRohde @LibrarianRyan I knew nothing of this controversy either. After reading a few articles, I want to go out and support her book just because of this. It‘s laughable to me that one of her rewrites was to take away ethnicity and make the characters white. Will she now be criticized for not having enough diversity? 6y
LiterRohde @LibrarianRyan I have a story I‘ve wanted to write for years, only recently having the courage to flesh it out and start seriously doing it. It‘s a hard story about physical and mental disability. And though it‘s fiction, it‘s based in my experience. I am, in this climate, afraid to write. Sorry for monopolizing your thread. You obviously hit a cord. 6y
LibrarianRyan @LiterRohde no need to apologize. We (Litsy in general) don‘t talk about this enough. Mainly because it rarely happens here. I thank you for your opinions. Good luck with your project. 6y
julesG This is so awful and I only know about as much as the tip of the iceberg. 6y
teebe I‘ve only heard about this today but I do find it weird that she made her character Black but was trying to write from her own cultural perspective. If an author is going to write a character that has a different cultural background than them, they need to seriously consider the implications of the story because there‘s going to be nuances they won‘t immediately see. 6y
teebe I just don‘t quite understand why she would set out to write a story from her own cultural perspective, as a critique of a specific oppression happening in Asia, but then make the character not reflect that. It‘s seems a counterintuitive choice. (edited) 6y
GingerAntics Censorship before it even gets off the press. Lovely. @teebe there are many people who think certain types of oppression only happen/happened to certain types of people. It‘s ridiculous, but true. I face this all the time in my work as a historian. It may have been that she originally wrote the character as Asian and was told to change it in an edit so that it would be more acceptable. 6y
CouronneDhiver I don‘t mind a potentially “problematic†read from time to time because I love to work through my ethical/moral/etc reasonings... see other angles... solidify my stand or adjust it accordingly (usually the former). I would be curious to see how many of these keyboard warriors have actually read the text themselves 🙄 6y
teebe @GingerAntics I don‘t think that‘s it, she was sharing photos of how she envisioned her characters and the main character was Black. Doesn‘t seem like an editorial decision. (edited) 6y
GingerAntics @teebe we don‘t know what the rough draft looked like. Those were probably tied to the final product. I still think it‘s ridiculous to censor before a book has even been released. 6y
teebe @GingerAntics the purpose of “played bys†are to show how the author themselves imagined the characters. And a quick look at some of her statements also shows that she purposely made the character‘s cultural bg different from hers. Given her intent to write a character from a different cultural bg, it‘s not unreasonable to expect that she have a more nuanced understanding of that background. It‘s why own voices novels are important. 6y
teebe @GingerAntics I‘m not speculating on whether pulling the book is or isn‘t warranted. And I‘m not saying that the reaction she‘s received is appropriate. My point is specifically that it was an odd choice and one that entailed a heavier responsibility in how the story got told. (edited) 6y
hermyknee Just learned about this issue via @thewallflower0707‘s thread. Is the book going to go through more editing before being released? From what I‘ve read, it sounds like a social media pile on, but I don‘t really know what happened. 6y
tpixie Sad there's censorship 6y
Booksblanketsandahotbeverage Omg i have this downloaded from netgalley - now i have to read it 6y
LibrarianRyan @BookHoarder32 yes. Because you won‘t get it again after it expires. The day I saw this I tried to download it it and it had already been pulled. 6y
The_Heeler_Booklife I feel so bad for her. I hope this doesn‘t ruin her career or make her give up on her dream of being a published author. Hopefully, she and her publisher decide down the road to publish it since a lot of people still want to read it. I have the arc from Netgalley and it‘s on my kindle, so I am going to read it sooner than I was. I heard some of the ratings/reviews were from people who didn‘t even read the book. 6y
LibrarianRyan @allthingskayla that‘s what happened with the Continent. And it never recovered. I haven‘t heard anything about the rest of the series. 6y
The_Heeler_Booklife @LibrarianRyan that‘s so sad. I bet it is amazing and that one is on my tbr. I just wish people were not taking a step backwards and complaining about things to where it gets pulled or something along those lines. 6y
