Three Moments of an Explosion: Stories
Three Moments of an Explosion: Stories | China Miéville
A highly anticipated collection of short fiction listed in the Guardian's 'Essential Literary Calendar' for 2015 from one of the most exciting and original authors writing today. The multi-award-winning China Miéville has been called 'the equal of David Mitchell or Zadie Smith' (Scotland on Sunday), whose 'inventiveness and precision is awesome' (Independent), and who writes with 'an imagination of immense power' (Guardian). In this extraordinary series of stories, defying definitions and literary stereotyping, he once again proves why he 'is one of the most interesting and promising writers to appear in the last few years in any genre' (Carlos Ruiz Zafon). In these stories, glistening icebergs float above urban horizons; a burning stag runs wild through the city; the ruins of industry emerge unsteadily from the sea; and the abandoned generations in a decayed space-elevator look not up at the stars but down at the Earth. Ranging from portraits of childhood to chilling ghost stories, from dystopian visions to poignant evocations of uncanny love, with beautiful prose and melancholy wit, this breath-taking collection poses searching questions of what it is to be human in an unquiet world. It is a humane and unsentimental investigation of our society, our world, and ourselves.

I‘ve always enjoyed Miéville‘s novels and I was not disappointed in this collection of short stories. Some were much better than others, but as a whole, I really liked the sometimes bizarre imaginings of his many worlds in these stories. I do think I love his novels more, but this collection has just added to my appreciation of China Miéville as an author. 4/5âï¸

This is my #LPMBC Group C (short stories) pick this month, so I won‘t say much. I love getting out of my comfort zone, so it was good to read a sci fi/fantasy/horror collection because I usually read literary fiction ones. There were a lot of medical ðŸ‘🻠and military themes, which was fun for me. Some stories didn‘t work for me, but there were quite a few good ones.

@Readergrrl I‘ll let you know when I get it in the mail.

vivastory One of my favorites of all time. There are a few pieces that are forever seared into my mind. 3y
BarbaraBB 😀 3y
Megabooks @vivastory I can see you loving this one. It‘s a solid collection, and I‘m really glad @shadowspeak17 picked it for our group. 3y

I enjoyed the weirdness and unique ideas in this collection, but it lost some steam for me in the second half. A light pick.

I‘m planning on mailing this tomorrow, @Megabooks . I‘ll send you the tracking number when I have it. 😊

Megabooks It arrived! I saw your note about using post its and that‘s cool, but I did notice a few underlined sentences. Is that okay? To underline when warranted? 3y
shadowspeak17 @Megabooks Oh, good! I was hoping it wouldn‘t actually take until Monday to get to you. 😄 I actually underlined using clear sticky notes. I sent some along with the book if you want to try them out, but if you‘d rather do it on the book that‘s okay. :) 3y
Megabooks Ah! I‘ve never used those before. Excited to try them out! 3y

Hey, #GroupC! 😊 What do you guys think of these?

(The Diving Pool is apparently novellas rather than short stories, but I decided to include it anyway because if the page count is right, it looks like the novellas must all be on the short side.)

Jadams89 All of these sound amazing. Three Moments of an Explosion has been on my TBR for awhile, but The Glassy, Burning Floor of Hell sounds really good too. I‘d be happy with any of these 3y
Megabooks Three Moments piques my interest too as does Wicked Wonders, but I have not read any and would be fine with all of them. ðŸ‘🻠3y

My #BookSpin from way back in December is now done read. Yay! It took a while but it was worth as all China Mieville's books I've read. I have to be honest, some stories were a bit too complex/strange/abstract for me, but others were simply awesome, his imagination is amazing. A pick!

And since today is the best day of the month when the #BookSpinBingo card is revealed, here is mine, Thank again for all you do @TheAromaOfBooks!

I probably wouldn‘t have said pick if I didn‘t love the final story so much, but I‘m still on the inertia of such a nice ending that I‘m probably rating the book higher than I would initially. It‘s by no means bad, but I found the trailer-formatted stories jarring, and struggled to get through a couple of the lingers ones, like ‘the man in the dusty hat‘.

I just finished a China Miéville short story about a secretive group of therapists that also act as assassins, clinically murdering individuals that get in the way of their patients‘ healing process.

It is possibly the closest I‘ve ever seen him get to outright comedy. Just wanted to share.

JCPaulk I've got to check this one out! 5y
Nebklvr Now THAT sounds intriguing and not as intimidating as some others by this author. 5y

This whole short story, “The 9th Techniqueâ€, is freaking insane, but I thought this paragraph worked as a mini horror tale all on its own.

MayJasper Out of curiosity may I ask why 'scavenger monk'? 5y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @MayJasper The short version is that it‘s a high school nickname that took on a life of its own. I‘ll tag you in an earlier post I made that explains the longer version. 5y
MayJasper Thanks Tobey for explaining. Are you still scavenging? I hope so 👠5y

Trust China to take caterpillar metamorphosis and turn it into unleaded nightmare fuel.

Aimeesue The REALLY freaky thing is that in experiments caterpillars that were exposed to unpleasant smell while they were munching on particular leaves will react to the same scent by moving away from it AFTER they go through the gooey metamorphosis and become moths!! How crazy is that? 😳 5y

Every single story in Looking for Jake, Miéville‘s first short story collection, was solid freaking weirdo gold (except, oddly, the title story).

I‘ll be working through his 2nd collection one story at a time between novels. The 1st story featured kids on chrono-Ecstasy exploring a building while it is exploding, & the explosion was a Burger King commercial, & the ghost of the building must be exorcised. It was 2 pages and was also fantastic.

saresmoore Where‘s the fudge, Miéville, you beautiful freaking genius?! I already want to read this from your description. 5y

I‘ve been on a short story reading kick lately. Within the past month I‘ve read Friday Black by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah (heralded by the New York Times), Wilderness Tips by Margaret Atwood (one of my favourite short story collections I‘ve read by Atwood to date) and now I‘m on to Three Moments of An Explosion by China Miéville who reminds me of a more political Neil Gaiman.

vivastory I've read (& loved) Miéville's novels, I need to check out his stories 6y
Pruzy @vivastory Which of his novels have you read and enjoyed? 6y
vivastory City & The City, Last Days of New Paris, Kraken. They're all different & wild & each one has a lot of insightful religious/social/political criticism without being overly didactic. 6y

Pruzy @vivastory I‘ve read Kraken, Embassytown and Railsea. I highly recommend Embassytown. It‘s probably one of his best works. However, I might pick up a copy of the City & The City and Last Days of New Paris thanks to your recommendation! I also have a copy of This Census-Taker sitting on my shelf. 6y
vivastory Will definitely move Embassytown up my TBR. Last Days is a fairly quick read, but unforgettable. I plan on reading all of his books eventually. 6y
GrilledCheeseSamurai @Pruzy @vivastory No love for Perdido Street Station or The Scar? Those 2 are probably my favorite Mieville. 👠I still need to read embassy Town. 🤔 6y
vivastory @GrilledCheeseSamurai I haven't read either of those. They're both high on my list, especially Perdido Street Station 6y

Here‘s a stack of all the short story books I have sitting on my shelf.
Three Moments I haven‘t read yet.
Daddy Lenin was a great collection.
Norse Mythology was more Gaiman magic. Daydreams I started but didn‘t finish.
Same for Public Library.
I hope to get to Wilderness Tips soon.
The Doll-Master was fittingly spooky.

Which of these collections would you read next?

A brilliant, mind-bending collection that really showcases Miéville's talents for style, voice and narrative. Many of them are definitely Weird but but the startlingly vivid imagery is backed up by Miéville's unrivalled originality, an impressive and some brilliant writing. Be warned though, it's not for the faint of heart or the sensitive of stomach! Favourites were Säcken, New Death, Keep and the trailers.

Story #fourteen in this mad, unsettling, brilliant collection. That last sentence, the one that forces a double take? It's Mr Miéville's forte, it's the Weird getting ready to burst it... #NovemberByTheNumbers

AlaMich I have this collection...I haven't read all the stories, but of those I have read, some are indeed mad. Like this last sentence, which you could easily miss if your attention wandered for a moment. But I do love his work. (edited) 7y

Once again, I have fallen deep under the spell of China Mieville, tumbling into his bizarre imagination, seeing the world through an entirely different prism. His creativity amazes me; in this collection of short stories, it is even more evident just how broad his knowledge is. Each story is completely different, necessitating a reinvention of the laws governing these worlds. It is a masterwork.

CherylDeFranceschi And now I can read this because the new one comes out Tuesday. Sometimes I need to have a "break glass in case of fire" book on reserve, and China fits that bill. 8y

I went into this collection really wanting to love it. Although the majority of the stories weren't really in my wheelhouse, the ones I liked have really stuck with me. I'm definitely eager to find out what Miéville can do with a full novel. Any suggestions on which of his I should try next?

Spiderfelt That would depend on which stories you enjoyed. His style varies so much. I started with City & The City and then moved on to his more 'weird' fiction. 8y
