Undoubtedly one of my favourite books and authors. “A Tale of Love and Darkness” is the story of a country through the life of the author, Amos Oz. The imagery and the personal stories, together with the narration of the historical events and the appearance of remarkable writers in the story make of this book a unique literary jewel.

This was a wonderful memoir that was a perfect choice for an Israeli book. It described times in history with which I was not familiar and provided a strong sense of place. It was very much a story of family and how our families impact the rest of our lives.

After several hours of War & Peace, I changed up my listening for supper. I‘m thoroughly enjoying this memoir as my book choice for Israel. Tonight I made Israeli chopped salad to go along with grilled chicken shawarma. I had originally planned to make pitas as well but decided against that much effort today. It was delicious and perfect for an outdoor spring meal!

I had a wonderful walk this afternoon listening to this book and finding a few morels. I wasn‘t really sure I wanted to start another audiobook over 20 hours, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I listened to already this afternoon. I found it interesting and especially enjoyed all the talk of books.

#QuotsyFeb21 Day 7: #Academic

I loved this book and I wish I could sit down with a group of friends and talk about it, revisit/share paragraphs that made me laugh and that made me sad. An insightful, intimate autobiography/family history. Certainly not a book you can rush through.

A tale of Kindness and Love for Books and their Owners: I left this book on my car, then drove off, forgot that it was on the trunk. Later I looked everywhere but couldn't find it. At 7pm someone rang the doorbell. An elderly gentleman handed me my Amos Oz copy and told me, he had found it on the interstate. My bookmark was a post card that had our address on it which is how he knew where the owner of the book lives. :)

Oh my, what a beautiful memoir. Oz's childhood was surrounded by memories of Jews, who escaped WWII, and their memories of those who didn't. He was raised by scholastic, erudite parents who wanted their son to be Someone. Oz and his father survive the birth of a new nation only to mourn and crawl out of the ashes that came after his beloved mother's death. So sweet and haunting. Oz clearly wrote to purge himself of bitterness and hate. 5 stars

There were no pictures, plants, or ornaments. Only books, more books, and silence filled the room, and a wonderful rich smell of leather bindings, yellowing paper, mold, a strange scent of seaweed and old glue, of wisdom, secrets, and dust.

RIP, Amos Oz 💔

It's taken me nearly a year to get through it. Not because it wasn't good but because just as Amos Oz takes you on a journey through his young life I wanted and needed it to be a journey for me too. It touched my soul, and put words to parts of me I didn't know even had an explanation. Beautiful and sad. I don't know if now that it has ended I will be able to read another book right away . Just as reading it took time so will moving on.

A book that speaks to my very soul :)

I am definitely reading more books by this author. And listening to more books narrated by Stefan Rudnicki! He was absolutely perfect.

I always think of this as a memoir, but Amos Oz is adamant that it's more of a biography. He chronicles his youth in Jerusalem around the time of Israeli statehood, but he also goes back to his parents and other relations in the old country. Dips a bit into more recent history, too. I picked up this book in preparation for viewing Natalie Portman's directorial debut, and it's a favorite read of the year. Nuanced observations. #FunFridayPhoto
