The Carpet People | Terry Pratchett
72 posts | 54 read | 33 to read
In the beginning, there was nothing but endless flatness. Then came the Carpet . . . Thats the old story everyone knows and loves. But now the Carpet is home to many different tribes and peoples, and theres a new story in the making. The story of Fray, sweeping a trail of destruction across the Carpet. The story of power-hungry moulsand of two brothers who set out on an adventure to end all adventures when their village is flattened. Its a story that will come to a terrible endif someone doesn't do something about it. If everyone doesnt do something about it . . . First published in 1971, this hilarious and wise novel marked the debut of the phenomenal Sir Terry Pratchett. Years later, Sir Terry revised the work, and this special collectable edition includes the updated text, his original color and black-and-white illustrations, and an exclusive storya forerunner to The Carpet People created by the seventeen-year-old nascent writer who would become one of the world's most beloved storytellers.

Imagine you‘re 17 again, sitting in your living room with a massive carpet underfoot. Your creative juices are flowing and you imagine miniscule people who live their entire lives in the carpet, with its deep forests and city walls built of dust. The “fray” is quite scary to the people and traversing the entirety of the carpet would take a lifetime. 17-yo Pratchett wrote a version of this somewhat mystifying book in serial form for his local ⬇️

Texreader newspaper. Years later he turned it into this book. There are lots of different “tribes” of wee people and lots of battles, and I got a bit lost and confused with the audiobook. The epilogue has his original serialization, and it should have gone at the beginning, which would have made the book more understandable. But I still give the book decent marks for immense creativity. I dream it could have been a book I wrote at that age. #authoramonth 2w

I'm willing to cut my favourite author some slack as this was his first published book, and it came out more than 50 years ago.
That being said, here's a fairly objective breakdown of the pros and cons. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality Cons:
-Have a suspicion that this borrows a little too much inspiration from indigenous people stereotypes to be viewed uncritically in the 21st century.
-Weirdly enough, considering the amount of reprints, it feels like it still needs one more run through with spellcheck (which I guess is a computer feature that didn't exist when it was first published...)
-Pacing drags a little. 2/?
2y
Robotswithpersonality On the one hand congratulations on the imagination, on the other hand, thinking about everything that might be deposited or living in a carpet makes me really glad to be in a bare floored apartment 😝 3/? 2y
Robotswithpersonality Pros:
-Similar to Tiffany Aching books in the Discworld series, Pratchett obviously started out early with an affinity for introducing heavier topics, harsher truths in a quiet, matter of fact way to a younger audience.
-Short termagant interlude so quietly, achingly sad.
-Pones are my new favourite fantasy creature.
-Illustrations a black-and-white Roald Dahl/Shel Silverstein vibes. 4/?
2y
Robotswithpersonality Themes:
-Ideas of destiny, of choice, of telling stories and taking action so they become truth
-What you choose to fight for, contrasted with the nonsensical nature of most conflicts between peoples
-Fairly sophisticated evil bureaucratic machinations, (playing on leaders' fears and superstition, conquering from within to obtain materials and labour source and food, to harvest further resources), given the probable reading demographic 5/5

This is fun and creative but the idea of a whole world full of creatures living in the carpet kind of gave me the heebie jeebies. But that's just me. It probably won't make your skin crawl.

Well, that was totally bizarre in a wondrous way. Even though it's OBVIOUS he wrote this as a teenager, his wit and commentary are still apparent. Especially with regards to kings and governments. So many wonderful one liners in here. Still, I probably would only recommend this to fellow members of the #pratchettposse 😁😁🤣🤣

Well, I did manage to finish this book, and I give it a So-So rating. You can tell this was written when he was a teenager and I agree with his introduction that there were two different authors for this book the 17-year-old and the 48-year-old Terry Pratchett. I‘m glad he decided heavily edit THE CARPET PEOPLE, Because it certainly needed it. It was a quick read and there was certainly humor that I found appealing. But the story was lacking.

I don't know if I'm going to make it through #OokBOokClub but I made it through this one so I've got high hopes! Pratchett's first work was easy to put down because nothing grabbed me. I liked the illustrations and a few of his observations but I struggled through this very short book.

AmyG I wasn‘t into The Carpet People. At first I thought it was an interesting premise, but then I skimmed. I‘m trying to see if I can do this Discworld challenge, but...I may not make it either. 7y
everlocalwest @AmyG I'm excited to see how far I can get...I'm already two books behind! 😕 But I'm going to try to stay with the #PratchettPosse! 7y

Read this on my kindle for #OokBOokClub I really enjoyed it, lots of humor and adventure mixed with comments here and there that gave an idea of the authors views on things. Quick question though, I know this is a hashtag being used for the read along, but what does it stand for? 😊 @TricksyTails

TricksyTails You‘ll find out once we start Discworld. 😉 7y

I enjoyed this early (and revised) story from Pratchett, it was a fun adventure, with some of his trademark observations on life and wit worked in throughout. I also enjoyed the story included at the end as he first wrote it in serial form at 17 for the local paper. It‘s great to see his early work and developing voice, that we know grows into such a great writer in years to come.

AmyG How prophetic. 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @AmyG Isn‘t it though? You start not caring for knowledge, lose it, and then the next thing you know it‘s the dark ages again. 7y
AmyG I feel like that is where our country is headed. :( 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @AmyG Me too, and no one seems to notice. It started with making fun of “smart” people (the Harvard elitist), devaluing education and science and knowledge, now there are many who truly believe the conspiracy theories over the facts, from anti-vaxxers to flat earthers, and a greater trend away from what we used to know as common sense suddenly becoming very uncommon. It‘s frightening to watch. 7y

Just starting my Pratchett today, I have this one from the library and the other 2 for Feb on the way. But so far this one is an easy read. So interesting to see the beginnings of his writing style emerging in this story that he originally wrote at 17 and then re-worked for re-release later. You can definitely see his social commentary sneaking through in great ways already even during this simple story.

I liked Terry Pratchett‘s first book way more than I expected. The idea of people living in the carpet is simply delightful. I loved the colorful hairs and dust, the snargs, the pones, the adventures. There are clearly two Pratchetts at work, and often I can see who wrote what. The story is all over the place but the imagination and the witty observations are vintage Pratchett. And Sir Terry‘s own illustrations are a special treat! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

AmyG I am reading this now. I love the premise. But, it‘s a bit dull at times as not a whole lot happens. 7y
Gezemice @AmyG At the beginning not much happens but after a while an awful lot happens. 7y
AmyG @Gezemice thank you. I am at the beginning...so that explains it. (edited) 7y
Scurvygirl I agree, the beginning was very dull, then all of a sudden the whole book just changed. 7y

The first page of the first book of Terry Pratchett and he already writes something equally witty and profound. And that‘s what I love about him.

I am reading along for the #ookbookclub - I have read almost all Discworld books but not his other works.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I quoted the same thing! That‘s the Pratchett we love! 7y
Gezemice @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Yes! And after reading The Dark Side of the Sun, I am quite sure this has been written by the older Pratchett. 😊 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Gezemice That was my guess too, the story was young Pratchett...some of the added wit and outlook on life was his older self tweaking it. 😉 7y

Sing: "The heat is on,... The heat is o-on... "

I just stood outside for 45 min watching the oil delivery guy smoking next to the hose leading from his lorry into the oil tank cellar. That guy *shakes head*

Anyway, heating is back on.

Yes, I put those stickers on the picture so you can't see the cobwebs behind the radiator.

I did some reading, in between making tea and syphoning off warmth from the cats. (Ghost is better)

It's Saturday morning. It's effing cold in my flat, because - yes, you all guessed it already - the central heating system has broken down again.

julesG @Suet624 Our stupid negligent landlord did not check the oil in the tanks. So, we're out off oil. On a Saturday. "Express/Emergency delivery costs extra!" - not my problem and I'm not going to pay my 1/15 (15 flats in the house) for the extra costs, because it's his bloody fault. 7y
Suet624 Thinking of finding a new place to live before next winter? 7y
julesG @Suet624 I've been trying to get a new flat for a year. My financial and family situation make me a pariah. No independent landlord wants an unemployed renter, let alone with two kids and two cats. And affordable social housing is too far from my daughter's school. So I'm going to bite the bullet and stay until my daughter has finished primary school (2more years) . My work situation might look better then, too. 7y
Suet624 I hope that darn landlord pulls it together and has the heat working better by next winter!!! 7y
Sarah83 Not really. What problem do they have to repair it? 7y
rabbitprincess That's ridiculous! I hope he gets his 💩 together and keeps that heater running more reliably! 7y
julesG @Sarah83 The repair guy is here. There's no oil. We told the landlord that this morning, still he sent the repair guy. Actually, it's funny, in a strange way. 😂😂😂😂 7y
