Land More Kind Than Home
Land More Kind Than Home | Wiley Cash
In his phenomenal debut novel--a mesmerizing literary thriller about the bond between two brothers and the evil they face in a small North Carolina town--author Wiley Cash displays a remarkable talent for lyrical, powerfully emotional storytelling. A Land More Kind than Home is a modern masterwork of Southern fiction, reminiscent of the writings of John Hart (Down River), Tom Franklin (Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter), Ron Rash (Serena), and Pete Dexter (Paris Trout)--one that is likely to be held in the same enduring esteem as such American classics as To Kill a Mockingbird, Of Mice and Men, and A Separate Peace. A brilliant evocation of a place, a heart-rending family story, a gripping and suspenseful mystery--with A Land More Kind than Home, a major American novelist enthusiastically announces his arrival.

#BookReport The jumping time line made History of Loneliness hard to follow but I‘ll be thinking about it for awhile. 4 🌟 Loved being back in Bardugo‘s Grishaverse 4🌟 TJAS was a good read, too 4🌟

A Land More Kind Than Home. Too many snakes, plus snakes and religion. No can do. The was my #Bookspin.

A friend recommended this to me for my #NorthCarolina read. This is beautifully written. I‘ve heard some complain it‘s too wordy but I think the author writes to illustrate the story. I could visualize so much. This is definitely tragic with a host of unsavory characters but still a great read. I‘ll be looking out for ore books by Wiley Cash.

Didn't really care too much for this book. Felt like I was reading this just to finish it. The only good thing I can probably take from this book is the writing. I'll have to wait and see if Cash's other book, The Last Ballad, lives up to my expectations.

Sometimes long on detail, but overall a satisfying southern gothic tale to listen to. Definitely includes some creep factor relating to fanatical religion. The narrator‘s voice for the sheriff character is a perfect fit.

I'm using the #backyard prompt to share some of the great authors who live in my state of North Carolina. It's good to have so many talented writers here in my own backyard. I've seen all four of the authors pictured, (clockwise) Wiley Cash, Jill McCorkle, Clyde Edgerton, and Lee Smith, speak here in town. #sizzlinsummerbooks @Tiffy_Reads

alisiakae I also live in NC! You can add Megan Miranda to that list...she lives in my neighborhood. 😃 7y
MallenNC @4thhouseontheleft I didn't know that! There are so many more I could have included, but I didn't know she lived here. There are also a lot of NC natives who have moved to other places. Hello from NC! (edited) 7y

#TBRtemptation post 5! A debut thriller about 2 brothers and the evil they face in a small western North Carolina town. Jess is enormously protective of his older mute brother, Chris. Chris snoops and sees something he shouldn't have & their world irrevocably changes. Told from three characters' perspectives: Jess; the town midwife & moral conscience, Adelaide; and, Sheriff Clem, who has a painful past. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

Great book! I'm by no means religious but this story centered around small town religious fanaticism and a heartbreaking crime really pulled me in. It's not really a whodunnit, but everything unfolds brilliantly with the use of alternating POVs (including a young boy who doesn't always understand what he's seeing). Also, Cash really nails the Southern atmosphere, I'm from NC and the accents and culture leap off the page 👌🏽

I loved everything about this book, and I might've cried for a tiny moment. (Am I getting weaker as I age?!) The characters were true to small town NC, and Chambliss was a perfect representation of an overzealous leader who preys on people who follow blindly. This was my first Wiley Cash, and I developed quite the author crush. 💞📚 #givemeallthecashbooks

This happened this morning... 😬 For the health of my #TBR piles I should probably avoid the thrift store on my Saturday errand runs, but it is right by the grocery store & I like to look for inexpensive food photo props for blogging. Their book section is normally pretty small but today was a good day & I ended up with these six books for $8.50. Pretty much a steal-especially for the newer hardbacks in great condition. 👍📚 #thriftstorefinds

Read way back in the beginning of 2016, this is the first book that came to mind when I thought of a small town. I had even mentioned how it had taken place and centralized around a small town in the south. Excellent read, if not heartbreaking.

A book suggested by a dear friend, it was my first book in 2016 and no regrets. A powerful story of a small town, a young boy and his brother, and the secrets no one wants to talk about.

How do you solve a crime when no one is even willing to admit that it happened?

Southern tragedy at its finest! Follow along with Jess Hall, a young boy growing up in rural North Carolina. One day he and his brother decide to snoop in on a local church gathering. What happens next sends the story into a spiraling dark thriller.
