Made You Up
Made You Up | Francesca Zappia
Reality, it turns out, is often not what you perceive it to besometimes, there really is someone out to get you. For fans of Silver Linings Playbook and Liar, this thought-provoking debut tells the story of Alex, a high school seniorand the ultimate unreliable narratorunable to tell the difference between real life and delusion.Alex fights a daily battle to figure out what is real and what is not. Armed with a take-no-prisoners attitude, her camera, a Magic 8 Ball, and her only ally (her little sister), Alex wages a war against her schizophrenia, determined to stay sane long enough to get into college. She's pretty optimistic about her chances until she runs into Miles. Didn't she imagine him? Before she knows it, Alex is making friends, going to parties, falling in love, and experiencing all the usual rites of passage for teenagers. But Alex is used to being crazy. She's not prepared for normal. Can she trust herself? Can we trust her?

Learned about a #freelittlelibrary just down the street from us. Moving this weekend, and my daughter decided she had a few books she didn't wish to take with us. Having recently heard about this FLL I decided I'd drop off the no longer desired books to add to their selection. I didn't intend to leave with my own mini haul. 🙄 But, in my defense one of these three books is one I grabbed for my daughter. 😁📚😊

Kristy_K I read Made You Up years ago and remember loving it! 5mo
monkeygirlsmama @Kristy_K After I grabbed it and was nearly home I started thinking I too may have read it already. LoL Not that I'll let that stop me from reading it again. 😁 5mo

This was an interesting book. A teenage girl with schizophrenia deals with her illness while also trying to lead a somewhat normal life in high school, if there is such a thing. Her issues with determining what was real and what was part of her psychosis leant itself well to the plot. It was an interesting portrayal of mental illness and ultimately I really enjoyed it.

Finished this yesterday! I think it was entertaining. However, I did not find the portrayal of schizophrenia to be realistic. The portrayal of schizophrenia was stereotypical. I did not enjoy any particular character. I also did not find the book to be unique. The dramatic scenes were especially cliched. I had heard many great reviews about it from my friends and family, but I did not enjoy it much.

Not my favorite Francesa Zappia book but was still good. You definetly never know what people are dealing with and why they are the way they are or do the things they do. I don't know enough about Schizophrenia to know if the details are accurately depicted but I would hope that readers wouldn't look to fiction for answers to any sort of mental illness.

4 1/2 stars out of 5. Amazing. The ultimate unreliable narrator. It had me pretty anxious throughout the whole book and it was quite a ride. You never know what is real and it gave me really intense feelings. Even after I finished the book, I had to sit and cry for a while.

Overall, I liked the book. My biggest problem was toward the end, when Alex sneaks out of the hospital. It threw the whole book off, as I was sitting there thinking “doesn‘t she have an IV in? She‘s in a hospital, she has an IV. You can‘t just take those out, it makes a mess, and the machines start beeping and the nurses have alarms!” Besides that, it was pretty good, though heartbreaking at times.

TrishB Good point 👍🏻 I enjoyed this book (though sad!) and it‘s one of my fave covers ever. 5y

YA romance with an odd, twisted mystery. It felt like a John Green to me, which is probably why I enjoyed it. Yes, it does touch on schizophrenia, but I wouldn‘t say that was the main focus of this book, so it shouldn‘t be the reason someone reads it.

The pacing was worthy of a one-sit read, & there were a lot of humorous quips and quirks, but there were some heart-breaking plot twists and moments of 😳😮🤭😢. 4.5⭐️

The story has a good premise and much potential. A teenager with schizophrenia makes a good unreliable narrator. However, I find character development is almost non existent. I‘ll like to read more of the protagonist‘s relationship with her parents. The portrayal of the mental illness seems not shown enough depth. The romance part was cute, the mystery was a bit ridiculous and the plot twist was no surprise. 👇 (cont.)

erzascarletbookgasm I liked the ending, which leaves much to interpretation. Perhaps I‘m not the target audience? Interesting though. 6y
TrishB I thought it was ok too and think it appeals more to teenagers (my daughter liked it). Seriously though, I only brought for the cover ❤️ 6y

Saw someone else share a screen capture of their first Litsy post. Got me curious about mine, so I scrolled a long way until I reached it: a review post of Made You Up by Francesca Zappia from 2016. I was partly motivated to read this because I was also writing a book with a main character who has schizophrenia. That manuscript ended up one of three finalists in a best unpublished novel contest. Overall, I loved it. The biggest issue was the beginning, where it dragged on for a while. Once it picked up, I was blown away. Reading about a character with schizophrenia was very interesting, but when I read other reviews, it seems that the mental illness wasn‘t well portrayed. *SMALL SPOILER* I loved that the little chapter photos revealed something 🤐🤫

Definitely a slow book. Took me a while to get into and threw the whole thing. The ending I thought was a little confusing. I'm not one to like love stories, but I did really love Miles and her loves story. How cute! There is a huge twist that makes your eyes well up. And it is very interesting to read about the schizophrenia aspect. To see the world threw her eyes, over all a good book.

I hovered between a so-so and a pan for this book. I can imagine that my young teenage students would love this book. As an almost 50 year old woman, I didn‘t. It was a quick read, but I did not find it well-written. The story line regarding the principal struck me as ridiculous. I did like the friendships represented and how the friends supported and accepted one another.

Alex has paranoid schizophrenia, and as she gets used to life in her new high school, she must constantly question what‘s real and what‘s not. Really enjoying this one thus far. I've seen and read a lot of controversy on it. To be honest I see it more as a YA contemporary/romance with a background of mental illness. For me the schizophrenia isn't all encompassing. I mean it may be inaccurate, but it isn't my main focus with this story. We shall see how it plays out!#muchlove #controversialbooks #sofarsogood

I‘ve seen mixed reviews on this book. Unfortunately I‘m one of the people who weren‘t impressed. At first this seems like it‘s going to be a story about living with mental illness, but you quickly realize it‘s a love story disguised as a story about mental illness. I don‘t know anyone who suffers from schizophrenia personally, but I can‘t imagine this was all that realistic a depiction. Rather, it‘s a convenient one. I do like this quote though.

Lately I‘ve been reading more misses than hits. I don‘t know if it‘s the books, me, or a combo of both. I have had fun participating in #litsyatoz, but because I‘ve been doing mostly that, I haven‘t been reading books I might choose next otherwise. Then again, I haven‘t been feeling well and that‘s makes me preoccupied, too. Now I‘m a little over halfway through this book, so I feel I have to see it through. Sigh. End rant. Can anyone relate?

monalyisha I have a hard time quitting books, too! What if it gets better & you miss it?! 😅 I like doing challenges/book clubs, but I find I‘ve also gotta give myself some freedom every month. Good luck! 🤞🏻 7y
AWahle Definitely! But don't let how far you've gotten in the book make you finish it if you aren't feeling it. There are too many books out there to spend time with ones that are bad fits. 7y
Kaye I don‘t waste time on bad books, or books that may be good, but not of interest to me. There have got to be millions more out there left to read .
