Catch up post time for #Scarathlon. I was reminded of one of the stories in this collection recently and actually read this one on Saturday. It was offered on Libby as an audio/ebook combo. Still a solid collection but I think I prefer the original illustrations. #BatBrigade #31by31 #Falling4Books #LittenListen #Rushathon #Spookoween #20in4 #FinalStretchReadathon #BookSpinBingo

The story The Green Ribbon which comes from Scary Stories to tell in the dark by Alvin Schwartz is actually based on a European folk motif. I loved this story as a kid because it scared me so much but I always wanted to read it again.

This book has seven short stories that are scary. The stories included are The Teeth, In The Graveyard, The Green Ribbon, In a Dark Dark Room, The Night it Rained, The Pirate, and The Ghost of John. My personal favorite is The Green Ribbon which is about a girl named Jenny who always wore a green ribbon around her neck.

I could probably have picked any story from Alvin Schwartz‘s creepy books. They are all cemented in my brain from school book fairs😅, but the story I remember well enough I could tell it myself is The Girl with the Green Ribbon.

Here‘s an interesting article about it! https://www.scarystudies.com/the-girl-with-the-green-ribbon/

A #campfire is the perfect place to tell a spooky story. The tagged book used to scare the pants off me when I was a kid.

Tonight's bedtime stories... for myself... you know... because I'm a grown woman with no children. What? Don't judge me! ?‍♀️?

In a Dark, Dark Room certainly takes me back to childhood. There are 7 stories in that one, but it's not quite "Halloween" and it doesn't fit the team theme, so just 35 points for that one (aside from readathon pts).

A found a few books for #scarathlon2021 while on my adventures in Dayton, OH. I'm not sure if I'll be able to read them all considering all I have planned, but it's fun to add them to the list.

1. I loved scary stories as early as summer school between 1st and 2nd grade. I don‘t know that I can recall one that stands out as scarier than the others. Tagged the earliest scary story book I can recall reading.
2. Hmm... maybe the first time I read World War Z? I had zombie themed nightmares for months. 😅
3. I‘d love to see an adaptation of World War Z that isn‘t “in name only”. 🤦‍♀️😅

BookmarkTavern Number 1 is the book that has The Green Ribbon in it! 😂 What a coincidence! Thanks for sharing! 4y

This collection of stories is not so scary, but many are based on myths and urban legends. +11 (Team theme - ghosts, zombies/post) for #TeamStoker #scarathlon

The #bookworm is reading instead of taking a nap, which is fine. The funny part is that she came out of her room with the tagged book to tell me it was too scary for her.

My 6 year old, who doesn't enjoy anything scary, chose this for us to read together. The Green Ribbon, in its various incarnations, is one of my favorite ghost stories! You can't beat Alvin Schwartz for a good story! 😍🧟‍♂️👻

Jenny and that damn green ribbon! I‘m 33 and that story still haunts me lol. But this little book is a classic. I‘m only posting because buzzfeed featured a funny article about the story lol! Here is the link: https://www.buzzfeed.com/lyapalater/for-everyone-thats-still-fucked-up-over-that... #books #reader #reading

shahn77 I don't think I will ever forget about the green ribbon either. I remember absolutely nothing else about these stories, but that one has stuck with me! 7y
theokiereader I made the mistake of telling the green ribbon story to my daughter. She STILL has nightmares about it two years later! We got the book a while back, and she always skips past that story. 7y

My recently-turned 9 year old asked to go see IT this past weekend. Finally one of my kids is following in my love of horror footsteps. I didn't take him to see the movie but decided to surprise him with some of my favorite scary books from when I was his age.

Kaye These would probably be more around his age level. I haven‘t seen the movie and don‘t plan to, but it might be a bit much. Of course, he already has a 30- year old mind, so maybe IT wouldn‘t scare him. 7y
Aloisi_tribe I've seen it and took the older kids but it definitely is not for a 9 year old, no matter how old his mind is. I think he'll really like these though and it'll help him get his reading homework minutes done. 7y
Aloisi_tribe @Kaye PS- he's also interested in haunted places like Alcatraz. Can you think of any books that would be good for him to read about haunted places? 7y
Kaye The only ones I can think of would be the Goosebumps books. I looked online in juvenile ghost stories and there‘s one that sounded cute. 7y
TricksyTails I keep hunting for copies of these at used bookstores/thrift stores. Love the illustrations. 7y

20. My first scary book! I was so young, I don't even know how young, and it both horrified and fascinated me. I became a little obsessed with having that particular edge in all the books I looked for after that. Also, my name is Jenny... #greenribbon 😝😵🙃 #AllHallowsRead #ScaryReads #photoadaychallenge

I loved scary stories as a child...Alvin Schwartz and RL Stine were my jam (Fear Street...none of that Goosebumps nonsense). I believe this to be my first #horror story collection, and after becoming an English major, educator, and librarian all these years later, I went back to this and was *shocked* it's basically a beginning reader. Might as well hook 'em while they're young. 😂😂😂😱
