Maia Toll‘s books are gorgeous! I hadn‘t dabbled in The Herbiary in a while, and realized I never reviewed it, so decided to sit down for a full read through. I love using the oracle cards to pick a plant and theme to explore, and Herbiary is filled with some lovely exercises in self-reflection. I love how she she delves into the personality of different plants and how we can use those traits in our own lives.

Let chickweed remind you to look for the little things.

I spent some time in the garden today doing exactly that. My husband was diagnosed with an immune disorder after being unwell since September. He has surgery this week, and more tests after to find out how bad the damage is. It‘s. Very scary time in this house. Little things are important, life is nothing but little things all adding up.

🌿🥾 I think yesterday was my highest step day during the #BFC challenge so far, and I was carrying the biggest day pack! 💪🏼

We went to one of my favorite hiking spots off the Blue Ridge Parkway. I posted more pics and info on my IG page @ alisiabergsman .

Spent the late afternoon in Asheville and shopped at the awesome store owned by The Illustrated Herbiary author Maia Toll!

Actually, the first time we went there a few years ago, we started at Graveyard Falls, but took a few wrong turns which turned an 8 mi hike into a 14 mi one by the time the day was done. Glad Maya stayed with the grandparents that day. 😂 5y

✨ Do you ever find yourself reading so quickly, flying through books, and find that you have stopped absorbing and reflecting on what you have read in your rush to the next one?🙋🏻‍♀️

✨ I definitely do this, and I am thinking of turning this summer into the Summer Slowdown.

✨ Take this book. I could have breezed through it in an hour. Instead, I decided to go in depth, and am creating a journal to ponder and respond to the many prompts.

alisiakae @Leftcoastzen Very true! (although this books is more about personal reflection tied to the personalities of each herb than an encyclopedia of 🌿 knowledge). But this applies to all of my reading too, I feel like I breeze through fiction and sometimes barely recall what a book is about a few months later. 5y

The rest of this week are designated self-care days. My bio mom passed away on May 31, 2009, 10 years ago.

A lot of people don‘t understand my grief for a person I never met. I grieve for the loss of a life too young, I grieve that she never fully overcame her battle with addiction. The unanswered questions I have that she took with her. And I grieve that the opportunity for reunion and to meet her only grandchild was lost w/her passing. ⬇️⬇️⬇️

alisiakae So I‘m being easy on myself the rest of this week to process the emotions of a decade gone without her in it, even if I never met her. Absorbing myself in reading, one thing I fully have in common with my bio mom, she was a voracious reader! She was a wanderer, and lived in New Mexico for a few years near Leslie Marmon Silko‘s birthplace, so I‘d like to think I am also reading books she would have enjoyed. 5y
