The Dirt on Ninth Grave
The Dirt on Ninth Grave: A Novel | Darynda Jones
18 posts | 60 read | 11 to read
In a small village in New York lives Jane Doe, a girl with no memory of who she is or where she came from. So when she is working at a diner and slowly begins to realize she can see dead people, she's more than a little taken aback. Stranger still are the people entering her life. They seem to know things about her. Things they hide with lies and half-truths. Soon, she senses something far darker. A force that wants to cause her harm, she is sure of it. Her saving grace comes in the form of a new friend she feels she can confide in and the fry cook, a devastatingly handsome man whose smile is breathtaking and touch is scalding. He stays close, and she almost feels safe with him around. But no one can outrun their past, and the more lies that swirl around her-even from her new and trusted friends-the more disoriented she becomes, until she is confronted by a man who claims to have been sent to kill her. Sent by the darkest force in the universe. A force that absolutely will not stop until she is dead. Thankfully, she has a Rottweiler. But that doesn't help in her quest to find her identity and recover what she's lost. That will take all her courage and a touch of the power she feels flowing like electricity through her veins. She almost feels sorry for him. The devil in blue jeans. The disarming fry cook who lies with every breath he takes. She will get to the bottom of what he knows if it kills her. Or him. Either way.

wanderinglynn @BethM I‘ve read them all. This is a reread as this is one of my favorite series. 4y
Andrew65 Wow! Great start.👏👏👏 4y
BethM Oh I missed that! What did you think of the rest of the series? This book was a huge disappointment for me and I only ended up reading one more. 4y
wanderinglynn @BethM I liked the whole amnesia storyline. Although I admit the storyline does get a bit outlandish, even more so in book 20. But I still enjoy it. And I‘m hoping Darynda does at some point tell Beap & Osh‘s story. 4y
BethM Did you hear that she has terminal cancer? 4y
wanderinglynn @BethM 😭 NO! I hadn‘t heard. That‘s horrible. F*ck cancer. 4y

I picked this up in the bargain section just because it looked fun. I didn‘t know it was part of a series until I started reading it, but I fully enjoyed it all the same. I got some Buffy, Supernatural, True Blood type vibes from this (minus the vampires). Ghosts, demons, other badass supernatural beings, a smart and sassy protagonist, and a bit of a steamy romance. This was pure fun! I‘m definitely going to look up the rest of the series now!

Jas16 Have you bought the other books from the series yet? I have most of them and would be happy to send them to you. 5y
GypsyKat @Jas16 That‘s so sweet of you to offer! ❤️ I did buy them though, I tracked down used copies of all of them. But thank you for thinking of me! ☺️❤️❤️❤️ (edited) 5y

Nine books in and the plot still feels pretty solid

This one had serious promise, but it just didn't do it for me. Jones writes very well but tries way too hard to incorporate about a billion elements, and they really don't come together well in the end. There is simply too much going on--an abduction mystery; a killer ghost mystery; supernatural weirdness; a lady who can talk to ghosts, understand any language, and forgets her identity; a romance. And then an archangel shows up. For real.

I deeply disliked this book, but I despise amnesia tropes, especially ones that last the whole book. I'll read the next one because I already own it, and previously enjoyed the series. I hope it doesn't disappoint.

Forcing myself to listen to this so I can read the other two in my tbr. I despise what she's done in this book which is why I'm holding myself captive in the car.

EloisaJames Life is too short? 8y
BethM @EloisaJames True! I'm not sure if I'll make it. I've adored this series up until this point which I guess is why I feel the need to slog through. It really is painful though. 8y
EloisaJames @BethM I haven't read that series, but I've seen that happen to paranormal series that I've lived. It must be hard to give up a world you created in such loving detail. But I can think of 3 series that I loved which just died 8y
BethM @EloisaJames now that you say that, I can think of some series that happened to as well. I wonder what it is about paranormal as it seems to happen more frequently in that genre- at least for me. 8y
EloisaJames @BethM I agree! I think there's so much creativity in creating the world--must be so hard to give up 8y

Finished #24in48 #readathon Book 2. Glad I FINALLY got it read since the 10th series book released last month. A pick if you are into the series although (spoiler if not up to date on it) not my favorite w/ Charley having amnesia & ending up working in a Sleepyside, NY diner. Her usual entourage is there, but holding back what they know until she remembers. I like Charley in full force but there are funny moments as she experiences her powers.

My reading weather this morning (we are at blustery rain/wind rather than cloudy though). Watching latest Tropical Storm Darby update to see what it does over The Big Island & Maui today-hoping it breaks up before arriving here tomorrow-then it's time to get back to reading my second #24in48 book. Made it midway through to Chapter 12 before calling it a night (or morning) at 1:30 AM. Coffee & checking in w/ what I missed & back to it! 🌨🌊🌬🌴🌦📚

My second #24in48 book is from my 'guilt stack'--I won it months ago & never got around to reading it. Crazy because I love this series--it makes me laugh. Jammies are on, sipping a cuppa of Pukka chamomile, vanilla & manuka honey tea. Charley Davidson, the main character would want coffee but it's 10:30 PM here & I want to sleep in a couple of hours. 😉

I think my longest relationship is with this series. NINE BOOKS! And Ninth Grave still felt fresh. After the [redacted] incidents at the end of Book 8, the series got a little reboot with this book. It was just a fun, enjoyable read. Charley Davidson is basically a paranormal Lorelai Gilmore and Cookie is, well, Sookie. These books fill the Stars Hollow sized hole in my heart.

I had this on pre-order for months before it came out. Then I decided to spend a decade rereading Eighth Grave After Dark before I started it. FINALLY finished so I can get this one done just in time to read The Curse of the Tenth Grave...Which comes out tomorrow. Not looking good for the home team.

I can't handle amnesia tropes. They bother me so much! I'm really grateful they only did it in this book. However the next looks great.
