Consuming Fire | John Scalzi
The Consuming Fire--the sequel to the 2018 Hugo Award Best Novel finalist and 2018 Locus Award-winning The Collapsing Empire--an epic space-opera novel in the bestselling Interdependency series, from the Hugo Award-winning and New York Times bestselling author John ScalziThe Interdependency, humanity's interstellar empire, is on the verge of collapse. The Flow, the extra-dimensional conduit that makes travel between the stars possible, is disappearing, leaving entire star systems stranded. When it goes, human civilization may go with it--unless desperate measures can be taken.Emperox Grayland II, the leader of the Interdependency, is ready to take those measures to help ensure the survival of billions. But nothing is ever that easy. Arrayed before her are those who believe the collapse of the Flow is a myth--or at the very least, an opportunity that can allow them to ascend to power. While Grayland prepares for disaster, others are preparing for a civil war, a war that will take place in the halls of power, the markets of business and the altars of worship as much as it will take place between spaceships and battlefields. The Emperox and her allies are smart and resourceful, but then so are her enemies. Nothing about this power struggle will be simple or easy... and all of humanity will be caught in its widening gyre. The Interdependency Series1. The Collapsing Empire2. The Consuming Fire

Scalzi, ya did it again! 👏🏻 This is the second book in a trilogy, and I'm not sure I've ever seen a second book with such a satisfying ending. I definitely want to read on, but it's great to feel like each book in this trilogy is a complete experience, there are character arcs and reveals and kick ass denouements. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/2 There's a fair amount of politics and some hand wavy science but it's told from such a grounded view (Kiva's POV in particular is a TREASURE, Marce's a close second), that I never feel like I'm slogging though court intrigue or hard sci fi tech speak. There are some deliciously unlikeable characters alongside the badass and endearing ones, but that really just adds spice. Cannot wait to see how it all wraps up. On to the next! 3mo
BkClubCare Can I be lazy and ask which book is first in the series? TIA! 3mo

Gender equality, yay? 🫣

GingerAntics Yeah, I kind of feel both sides here. I mean, yay it was a woman… at the some time, some of the most reprehensible, cut throat lawyers are women (probably because they had to be that way to get even a modicum of success). 3mo

Book 2 of the interdependency - characters introduced in book one who were just coming into their roles now get room to grow and settle into their positions. If book 1 introduced the major problems to be addressed, book 2 is trying to get everyone to take it seriously. As with book 1, the parallels to pandemic times are there, even though it was written pre-pandemic. If you liked the first book you'll like this one for the same reasons.

Scalzi always delivers a fun story. I enjoyed this one, the second in the series, very much, and Wil Wheaton does an excellent job narrating. Looking forward to book three.

Although I was still enjoying it greatly, up to about halfway through this - the middle book of the trilogy - I was thinking that it was suffering from a serious case of book-two-itis. But then some unexpected plot developments came out of left field, and things suddenly got a whole lot more interesting. Still tons of fun with lots to say - and so much intrigue and so many plots within plots - but definitely don't start with this one.

Wow. I was expecting to labor through a sophomore slump so that I could quickly get to the final book. But hot damn! Crescendo to the very end, of which many parts I actually screamed out a “Hell Yes!” Or a F- yeah!” Bad ass women taking charge. Best book I‘ve read this year.

Like most Scalzi this was a quick read with some humor. I enjoyed the political wrangling and intrigue that poor Cardenia and Kiva have to deal with. There was also more information about how the world works that I found interesting. All in all I look forward to the next installment.

Loving this book so far. It started out slow because the author did a data dump at the beginning to help set the stage for the story and I wasn't sure I was going to like. Once your get past that it got good fast. Lots of intrigue.

If you‘ve read a John Scalzi book, you know what you‘re getting. This one was another interesting popcorn style book. There‘s little to really crunch on but the story moves quickly and it‘s engaging. Don‘t bother learning much about the characters. They all basically talk and act the same way. Apparently we‘re all just snarky in the future. It‘s fine though. I like his books, I just have problems recommending them to others.

GrilledCheeseSamurai I've never read a Scalzi book. I keep meaning to get around to it. He's damn entertaining on twitter. 🤷‍♂️ 5y
Geeklet @GrilledCheeseSamurai They‘re really fun if you enjoy his Twitter banter. This series has a lot of action and political intrigue with your standard level of Scalzi humor. I honestly look at his books as the equivalent of a big Hollywood summer movie. They ain‘t great but they‘re lovable. 5y

I can see why this got so-so from some readers, it's more talky and political than some of Scalzi's space opera books like Old Man's War. I loved it, but I like politics so I found all the back room maneuvers and double crosses to be very entertaining. It reminded me a little of Dune, with the various houses plotting and planning against each other. 5 💥💥💥💥💥 out of 5.

One of the problems with Epic Sci-fi series is that the author has so many big ideas and complex scenarios that the books become bloated. Scalzi has a brilliantly thought out world and lots of moving pieces but his attempts to keep the story more concise and moving along makes it feel rushed at times. While it‘s fun and he pulls it together well, in the end I felt like there were areas that could have been explore more and opportunities missed.

This, to me, was not one of Scalzi‘s better books. I kept getting bored. I think it works best as a climate change allegory, with a side of political commentary on imperialism, capitalism, intelligentsia, scientists, historiography, and responsibility. As most good sci-fi does.

RamsFan1963 ☹ Darn! I'm sorry to hear that. I'm still looking forward to reading it. 6y
