Pickpick

This is the book that first got me hooked onto the Vorkosigan series, one of my all-time favourite sci-fi series. It's a later book but was fine as an entry point. Now I'm rereading the entire series for a third time, this time on audio during long car trips with my husband.

This series is fast paced, funny and plays with pseudoscience (a lot) so well you can almost believe it. Skippy, the alien AI, makes the series. He's such a smart ass.

Ruthiella I feel like pseudoscience in SciFi is like the magic system in Fantasy: if the rules make sense and are consistent, awesome! 3d

Mehso-so

The score of a lifetime, & it will take a rag tag group racing against a powerful company to get there first.

There was a lot I liked. Found family, space heists, wide expansive worlds, corporations are the bad guys. But we didn‘t actually get to the heist, it felt like we only got the first half of the story, the romance felt forced, & I‘m not a big fan of futuristic sci fi that tells me that fatness shouldn‘t exist. 🌕🌕🌗🌑🌑

BookmarkTavern Nika‘s chapters deal with her fleeing from a past abusive relationship; chapters 37 and 39 contain instances of domestic abuse 1w
Bookzombie “I‘m not a big fan of futuristic sci fi that tells me that fatness shouldn‘t exist.” Ugh. Me either. I didn‘t have this on my radar, but I‘m definitely not stacking now. Thanks for the review! 1w

BookmarkTavern @Bookzombie Yeah, it was mostly just Nika‘s chapters, but I got very tired of her internal thoughts talking about she wanted to put various people into her machine to help them lose weight. 1w
julesG Nika's thoughts about what she'd change on which person made me roll my eyes. Yes, she's an artist and as such she sees how she could use her craft on the people she meets, but the fat shaming was too much and too often. I'd rather have her go on about how to recreate an interesting nose or brow ridge. 7d
BookmarkTavern @julesG Right! Like every time she got excited about a really unique hair color or patterning on the skin, I was excited too! 7d

My favorite book for August was the start of yet another trilogy. I know a lot of people were turned off by the romantic elements of this book, and I admit it was eye rollingly heavy at times, but I enjoyed the characters, the world building and the interesting villain.

The sequel to Cascade Failure was my favorite book of July. The crew of the Ambit is forced to work with their worst enemy to save the life of one of their family members.

Here are a few questions to think on for our December selection, Stars Uncharted by S.K. Dunstall.

1. A lot of concepts/technologies were presented (aka body modification) that where farfetched. Do you think the author handled it well?
2. Most everyone had something they were escaping. Do you think this over complicated the plot?
3. What worked and didn't work for you in this book?

Feel free to discuss anything. These questions are just to...

CatLass007 This has been an insane month. I haven‘t participated in any of my buddy reads. I have the books I just haven‘t had the time. I‘ll probably work on the unread December books and the January books at the same time. 2w
TheSpineView @CatLass007 I get it. December was very busy. You are welcome to come back and comment at a later date. 2w
Ruthiella I felt the body modification details were too descriptive and unnecessary, complicating a pretty simple story m. And the bad guys were only as bad (or as inept) as the plot needed them to be. For me, personally, there was a better book in there. On the plus side, I did like the characters and their distinct personalities. 2w
julesG What @Ruthiella said. 😜 2w
CatLass007 Thank you.💝 2w
Karisimo I liked the characters a lot too! 2w
julesG I would have liked to see more of the titular uncharted stars. I expected more space exploration. 2w
TheSpineView @julesG I had not thought about it. However, now that you point it out there was a lack of exploration. There was so much stuff going on, if the author threw anything else at the reader it would have gotten lost. 2w
Larkken I thought the body mod stuff was a unique way to scifi the plot, but i agree that I wanted to see more of the universe like @julesG Can a book be overly action packed? 😂 I think that I approved of the body mod bc there was a method/science/whatever to it that made sense, while the search for a mineral that only existed on some mythical world did not. Why couldn't they just manufacture more? Obv their chemistry should be up to it. 1w
BookmarkTavern I really found the science part of the mods fascinating, especially the discussions between Nika and Snow about different schools of thought in how to mod. But it was disappointing that the text seemed to have a very specific view towards weight. 1w
TheSpineView @BookmarkTavern I had not thought about weight. However, now that you point out, the narrow view is apparent. 7d

Capture the Sun: A Novel | Jessie Mihalik

I didn't get any books for Xmas/ my birthday but I did get a gift card and some money so #bookhaul time! 5 books and an agenda for the new year, very pleased with my haul. Everything I got was on sale too except Capture the Sun. That's probably the one I'll start as soon as I finish my current physical book.

I hope all of you had/are having lovely, relaxing, bookish holidays. Wishing you all the best.
