Through the Woods
Through the Woods | Emily Carroll
Discover a terrifying world in the woods in this collection of five hauntingly beautiful graphic stories that includes the online webcomic sensation His Face All Red, in print for the first time.Journey through the woods in this sinister, compellingly spooky collection that features four brand-new stories and one phenomenally popular tale in print for the first time. These are fairy tales gone seriously wrong, where you can travel to Our Neighbors Housethough coming back might be a problem. Or find yourself a young bride in a house that holds a terrible secret in A Ladys Hands Are Cold. You might try to figure out what is haunting My Friend Janna, or discover that your brothers fiance may not be what she seems in The Nesting Place. And of course you must revisit the horror of His Face All Red, the breakout webcomic hit that has been gorgeously translated to the printed page. Already revered for her work online, award-winning comic creator Emily Carrolls stunning visual style and impeccable pacing is on grand display in this entrancing anthology, her print debut.

This was a decent collection of graphic short stories, each with an eerie premise. I feel like the art was a tonal mix of classic fairy tale and Goosebumps. My favorite was the final story, “A Nesting Place.” It was the most “fleshed” out and had a concrete premise that I could sink my teeth into (see what I did there…) Some of the other pieces were a bit too ethereal or subtle for me and I felt like I was left wanting more. ⬇️

This is classified as horror. I wasn‘t scared and that‘s the reason for the so-so rating.

5 stories about what lurks in the woods and comes out of it.

3rd book for #20in4

Thanks for the tag @Yuki_Onna ??

? Mystery!
? Haunted House!
? A lot of promising spooky books turn out to be disappointing. The Loney had incredible atmosphere, but didn't fully hang together, for example...

I'm going to go for the tagged because the short story "The Nesting Place" was one of the creepiest things I've ever read!!!

Slade House by David Nicholls also gave me creepy vibes.

Picked this up out of my daughter's stack of library TBRs. Again, I don't read a lot of graphic novels but this was super fun. It has 5 short stories with images that could stick with you as well as "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark"

First graphic novel read in a while. It's neat that the author also provided her own illustrations (or maybe it started the other way around), which was definitely one of the highlights. The artwork was immersive and simple, like news comics, Curious George, Matilda; but I liked it included word bubbles. Second and fourth stories were the best, though all were atmospheric, experiential, the collection's strength. Brothers Grimm + Japanese horror

I dreamt I woke up on a boat
A rocking boat
A quiet boat
On a smooth black sea we float
Away, away
away
I dreamt a Captain dressed in grey
I dreamt I wore a long white coat
I dreamt a stone caught in my throat
I dreamt I choked
and choked
and choked
I dreamt my legs were long and pale
made of smoke
I choked and choked
And when I woke I wrote and wrote
as though it might all float away.

And she was awoken by a soft song: I married my love in the springtime,
But by the summer he'd locked me away.
He'd murdered me dead by the autumn,
& by winter I was naught but decay.
It's cold where I am and so lonely,
but in loneliness I will remain,
Unloved, unavenged, & forgotten,
until I am whole once again.

Where has this been all my life?! Each story has a smooth storytelling and beautiful narration, and the artwork compliments the tone of the narration and elevates the horror. It dialed up the creep and terror factor at the end of each story for me. Worth a read for fans of horror #comics #horror #lgbtqauthor #weekendreading

I enjoyed these unsettling short stories in graphic novel format. The ambiguous endings make it the perfect choice for a Teen Book Club. My favorite selection is “The Nesting Place,” which seems to shout the lesson, “If anything can save you, reading can!” I especially liked the darkly twisted allusion to the bedroom from “Goodnight, Moon” in the conclusion. Heavy on the red, black, & blue color palette. Be prepared for sharp teeth & eyelessness.

These graphic novels short stories were incredibly dreamlike and fairytale-ish. Most of them had dark woods in them in some way, and they were scary in a childish campfire story sort of way with very atmospheric illustrations.

1. I would have to say the Cacodemons from the original Doom videogame series... so cute, and yet so evil 😄
Other iconic faves can be found in The Golden Voyage of Sinbad & Trapdoor 😂😂
I also like Vampires. Of the non-twilight variety.

2. The Nesting Place *shudder* 😱😱😱

3. I'd like to read a creepy ghost (or lurking monster) story that actually hangs together by the end. Any suggestions?

Read this graphic novel story collection last night with the dim glow of amber fairy lights, the candle, and just my booklight. Some great stories, but I think my favorite was “His Face All Red”. Quick and spooky pick for Halloween.
