Fire (Bound for Schools & Libraries)
Fire (Bound for Schools & Libraries) | Kristin Cashore
It is not a peaceful time in the Dells. In King City, the young King Nash is clinging to the throne, while rebel lords in the north and south build armies to unseat him. War is coming. And the mountains and forest are filled with spies and thieves. This is where Fire lives, a girl whose beauty is impossibly irresistible and who can control the minds of everyone around her. Exquisitely romantic, this companion to the highly praised "Graceling" has an entirely new cast of characters, save for one person who plays a pivotal role in both books. You don't need to have read "Graceling" to love "Fire." But if you haven't, you'll be dying to read it next. This edition includes an article by and an interview with Kristin Cashore, as well as a sneak peek at her next book, "Bitterblue"!

Out of the Graceling series this was the one that I felt was so out of place. I did have the opportunity to read Bitterblue before Fire and honestly I‘m glad I did. If I read the books in publication order I would be so confused. It‘s interesting to see the other world not so far away but it sounds like it should be its our series, not tied to the story we know. It was a great adventure though!

Brilliant.

Just as good as Graceling with an equally wonderful and engaging heroine in Fire.

Not a sequel but a companion book, an expansion of the world.

Fire is another very strong female lead, but on the opposite side of the spectrum from Katsa. The emotional depth we lacked with Katsa was fulfilled with Fire, and the unique ties between the two stories brought an added layer of satisfaction to readers. Definitely recommend reading Graveling before this.

Pain might escalate upwards, and, just when you'd thought you'd reached your limit, begin to spread sideways, and spill out, and touch other people, and mix with their pain. And grow larger, but somehow less oppressive. She had thought herself trapped in a place outside the ordinary feeling lives of other people; she had not noticed how many other people were trapped in that place with her.

There is nothing unnatural in this world," he said. "An unnatural thing is a thing that could never happen in nature. I happened. I am natural, and the things I want are natural. The power of your mind, and your beauty, even when you've been drugged in the bottom of a boat for two weeks, covered in grime and your face purple and green - your unnatural beauty is natural. Nature is horrifying.

I love this series (almost) as much as my dear Brigan loves horses. Fire is a completely different story to Graceling, just with the same incredible writing. The characters between the two books were worlds apart, (my love for Katsa does outweigh my love for Fire) but Brigan, Small (the horse), and the incredible world of the Dells makes Fire my favourite book of the two. Truly, this world of colorful, beautiful monsters refuses to leave my mind.

It was a hurting tune, resigned, a cry of heartache for all in the world that fell apart. As ash rose black against the brilliant sky, Fire's fiddle cried out for the dead, and for the living who stay behind to say goodbye.

Not as amenable as “Graceling” but again I liked the character development and often could relate to Fire. But I‘m no huge fan of too much politics and intrigue and often felt like the story didn‘t proceed.

The German link above says there‘s a prologue. Whelp, the audiobook has none. I feel betrayed.

Bummer that I had some problems remembering characters.
But all in all enjoyably different from common YA-fantasy

Ha‼️ Finally. Yesterday I identified the link between this volume two and the previous one. “Fire” is set in a similar world/universe even though the area of the plot is different. Nevertheless, I always wondered what Fire has to do with the Kadsa and the others.

I certainly knew that this is supposed to be a prequel but things didn‘t seem to go together well. But since about 45 minutes I identified the link.

It‘s [insert spoiler here]‼️🙌🏼

👉🏼 https://bit.ly/3aGrcgJ ➡️ The Dells and Pikkia (Fire)

Surprisingly different from volume 1.
Needed some time to find into because I expected something that at least takes place in a similar world – which it doesn‘t seem to do; not really. But I like it. Especially that there thankfully is no (typical) love interest involved.

So, let‘s see where the threat of war and humans with monster-blood will take me.

And here we go. Volume 2. I‘m curiously looking forward to it.

And you know, I have a crush for this cover. It‘s glimmering. The more often I looked at the cover of „Graceling“, the more I liked it also. But due to the background, the brown hair didn‘t reflect like this red does.

.5/5⭐ If Graceling had as much infodumping, it served a better purpose than in Fire. The tone is so bleak with rape & animal abuse EVERYWHERE. Fire is a flat character whose only notable trait is her devastating beauty literally driving men crazy. Her character path is driven almost entirely by the men around her. Seriously? After such a complex, fully-formed, active character like Katsa who defines & defends her own identity? So disappointing.

Just_reading Agree and agree some more. I also found all the characters hard to keep track of. I'm spending most of this book feeling lost 😂 4y

In the world of this novel, some animals are "monsters," imbued with a beauty and persuasiveness that brings them great power. Fire is a human "monster" struggling to accept this power. I found this novel profoundly boring. I should have bailed halfway through, but I wanted to see how Cashore resolved a specific situation. Why in YA fantasy worlds are social structures just like ours only with magic? Now it's in the "back-to-the-library" basket.

I'm not feeling the tagged book, and I've been distracting myself with the caterpillars in our backyard. Yesterday we watched the transition from caterpillar to chrysalis. It took about 3 min from J-shaped caterpillar to chrysalis, then a few more minutes to smooth itself into the classic chrysalis shape.

Now, we wait.

And I decide whether to finish this book or not. Is it worth seeing it to the end?

Crazeedi Very very neat, ❤️❤️the beauty of nature 5y

So I absolutely liked this book note than Graceling. Fire is an especially enjoyable main character and voice that I always rooted for and wanted to know where her path was going. I also live that the main characters in Graceling and Fire both go against the assumptions/roles we put on female characters when it comes to sex, virginity and children.

pythoness I absolutely LOVE Kristen Cashore—early this year I re-red Graceling, Fire, and Bitterblue (for the first time in several years) and then ended up tearing through the entirety of Jane, Unlimited since I‘d finished with re-reading, but wanted to read something else of hers. (Six or so months later and I still Jane, Unlimited very much on my thoughts. It has some mixed reviews, but my god, I‘d wholly recommend trying it, at least.) 5y

This prequel to Graceling follows Fire, a young woman who is the last of her kind: a human-shaped monster who is intoxicatingly beautiful and has the ability to control minds. But her kingdom is under threat of a civil war, and Fire is called on to use her gifts that she's kept suppressed for years. The beginning was slow and the story took a while to get going, but the palace intrigue and secrets kept me interested.

MidnightBookGirl I actually loved this more than Graceling. 7y

Love the UK covers so much more than US. I liked this one much more than Graceling, it had a full political/romantic/internal conflict. I thought Archer's inability to keep it in his pants was going to be a "boys will be boys" trait, but that was not the case: drastically affected his life and relationships. Addressed menstruation with frankness. Well presented case for Fire deciding to not have kids. I defy someone to draw the family tree. ?

NovelGirl82 I liked this one better than Graceling, as well. I really enjoyed Graceling, but Fire just had so much more to it! 8y
BookFreakOut @NovelGirl82 Especially in the relationships between people. In Graceling it was pretty much just Katsa/Po but this had individual depth between Fire and all the royals, her guards, etc. and in ways that weren't just romantic. Hannah/Briggan hands down favorite duo! 😊 Don't know if that's how the names are spelled, I listened to it. 😜 8y
NovelGirl82 Definitely! The relationships were so much better in Fire. Fire was definitely a stronger protagonist, in my opinion. I have Bitterblue, but I haven't read it yet. 8y

Laalaleighh I DNF'd graceling. Was that a mistake? 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Laalaleighh, not if you weren't enjoying it... it's only a very loosely connected series (so if this one interests you, it's fine to go ahead and read it without finishing Graceling) 8y
BookFreakOut @Laalaleighh I agree with @thegirlwiththelibrarybag. I actually DNFd Graceling my first time through so let that tell you how much better Fire is! It contains the origin of one Graceling character but you don't need to have read it, it's not even set in the same place and takes place prior to Graceling. I say go for it, and Google a synopsis of Graceling if you want, but it's not necessary. (edited) 8y
Readasaurus_rex I loved this one! And I got the U.K. Cover too because I happened to be in Ireland when I desperately needed to read this one 8y
Laalaleighh @thegirlwiththelibrarybag that's a great suggestion! Thanks!! 8y
