The Cold Between
The Cold Between: A Central Corps Novel | Elizabeth Bonesteel
15 posts | 11 read | 1 reading | 8 to read
From debut author Elizabeth Bonesteel, The Cold Between is the start to a stellar military science fiction series that combines hints of mystery and romance with action and adventure in the tradition of Elizabeth Moon, Linnea Sinclair, and Lois McMaster Bujold. When her crewmate, Danny, is murdered on the colony of Volhynia, Central Corps chief engineer, Commander Elena Shaw, is shocked to learn the main suspect is her lover, Treiko Zajec. She knows Trey is innocenthe was with her when Danny was killed. So who is the real killer and why are the cops framing an innocent man? Retracing Dannys last hours, they discover that his death may be tied to a mystery from the past: the explosion of a Central Corps starship at a wormhole near Volhynia. For twenty-five years, the Central Gov has been lying about the tragedy, even willing to go to war with the outlaw PSI to protect their secrets. With the authorities closing in, Elena and Trey head to the wormhole, certain theyll find answers on the other side. But the truth that awaits them is far more terrifying than they ever imagined . . . a conspiracy deep within Central Gov that threatens all of human civilization throughout the inhabited reaches of the galaxyand beyond.

Overall, I liked this. There were times when the different threads of genre didn't quite mesh, and I think it's a little long. Additionally, the narrator's voice was sometimes too flat. Maybe that was on purpose.

Good things: the mystery, the main characters (with the exception of Greg; shut up, Greg), and the space opera parts.

Mehso-so

I thought 3/4 of the book was terrific, but the resolution lost me somewhat.

Mmmm just what I want in a space opera: character driven, adventure and banter. Bonus: a scorching love scene in the first few pages! 😊😍👍

Still working my way through the books I have to read for the #NYCC panel I'm moderating in October.

GuiltyFeat Bonesteel? I'm guessing NOT her real name. Don't understand why she didn't go all the way and throw in an umlaut for good measure. 8y
ColleenLindsay @GuiltyFeat A bit cynical, yeah? Actually, it is her real name. 8y

"Don't yell at me... I didn't bite you!" Snark, sexuality and spaceships! Loving The Cold Between and its faceted, complicated and believable characters.

Okay, this...just isn't working. It's not a BAD book, but it's just not engaging me very much right now. Might be the headspace I'm in atm. Anyway, setting this aside before I get too frustrated with it. Might go back to it when I'm in a better mood for it.

Especially since this particular trope is applied to women and powerful men. Love seeing the shoe on the other foot for once XD.

Hrrrrrrr, rather close to bailing on this. Will just put it aside for now and focus all my attention on McCarty's The Saint, then pick it up again afterwards. Maybe this needs a soundtrack to save it? Let's see if that works. *goes to track down the Mass Effect OSTs*

Yeah, preemptively yelling at people ain't gonna solve much, Captain. But then again, you always did tend to react a little irrationally around this particular person, so.

Ohhhh, but that's nice. Very nice indeed - and it's not in the least bit romantic.

Not entirely sure what to think of the first few chapters, but now Big Things have happened and I am much more interested now :D.

I could not put this down, and I wished it were twice as long so I could keep reading.
