Little: A Novel | Edward Carey
The wry, macabre, unforgettable tale of an ambitious orphan in Revolutionary Paris, befriended by royalty and radicals, who transforms herself into the legendary Madame Tussaud. In 1761, a tiny, odd-looking girl named Marie is born in a village in Switzerland. After the death of her parents, she is apprenticed to an eccentric wax sculptor and whisked off to the seamy streets of Paris, where they meet a domineering widow and her quiet, pale son. Together, they convert an abandoned monkey house into an exhibition hall for wax heads, and the spectacle becomes a sensation. As word of her artistic talent spreads, Marie is called to Versailles, where she tutors a princess and saves Marie Antoinette in childbirth. But outside the palace walls, Paris is roiling: The revolutionary mob is demanding heads, and . . . at the wax museum, heads are what they do. In the tradition of Gregory Maguire's Wicked and Erin Morgenstern's The Night Circus, Edward Carey's Little is a darkly endearing cavalcade of a novel--a story of art, class, determination, and how we hold on to what we love.

A highly fictionalized account of Madame Tussaud‘s life including an interesting take on the French Revolution. The writing style was interesting. It felt like reading a fable. The author is a playwright and YA author so that‘s likely why. Interesting characters, including some villains and a lot of people that are neither good nor bad. I recommend for anyone interested in wax figures, the French Revolution or just looking for something quirky.

What an interesting read! I am unsure how much of this book is based on fact, not knowing much about Madame Trussauds. The book itself is a bit macabre with interesting sketches throughout making it highly original. I was engrossed throughout with Little and what trials and hopefully luck she would encounter.

Little is dark, interesting, informative, strange. It is flavored "sad" with a hint of "sweet" here and there. Marie grows up during the French Revolution and there is a lot of hardship there, but sweet Marie is used to that, and she moves forward quietly and diligently.

This is one of those stories that maybe a few years after reading, you don't remember all the details, but you do remember all the ways it made you feel.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I got so bored by the end but this fictionalized account of Madam Tussaud's life wasn't awful. The writing style was quite disjointed and awkward, also extremely repetitive which has been one of my biggest complaints lately! I'd have been more interested in a biography, honestly. At the very least, it's off my Kindle TBR... #mountTBR

A largely fictionalized account of the early life of Madam Tussauds, her experience in Paris , Versailles and a tumultuous ride through the French Revolution. ⁣

This was on my most anticipated list of 2018, and I think it fell victim to my unrealistic high expectations. Has that ever happened to you? Which book could never live up to your expectations? ⁣

I have the sense that this leaves a lot out. For ex, there is reason to believe that she bribed people to get to the famous dead heads & there is a bit of weirdness in her - neither of which is addressed. If you like the time period or “against the odds” biographies, this could be a book for you. Pacing and balance were slightly off. It was also confusing in some places. Although I won‘t forget this book, I can‘t quite get to a pick.

Little is a historical fiction following the life of the girl then woman who would become Madame Tussaud. I am curious how closely this hews to her reality. It was fine but I was never entirely taken in by it. I felt like if I stopped in the middle and forgot to keep listening it would have been fine.

Loved this book!
Loosely based on the life of Madame Tussaud.
Nicknamed “Little,” Marie learns wax-working from her guardian, then becomes involved in casting heads of murderers, villains, and those gruesomely killed during the French Revolution.
I loved every page - Edward Carey has a succinct, intelligent writing style.
The illustrations throughout were a fun addition, also.

Madame Tussaud. A name that is not unfamiliar but most only know her legacy and not her beginning. "Little" focuses on that beginning, and takes you through the many years and people that influenced Marie's life and helped make her who she became. Told through her eyes, the writing can be dark and is unsentimental in its treatment. There's a lack of judgement of the characters which adds to a stark reality throughout.

This is a reimagining of Anne Marie Grosholtz‘s life, better known as Madame Tussaud. If only a fraction of what I read is true than Anne Marie led quite a colorful life. Orphaned by age 5, she is left in the care of an eccentric doctor who is obsessed with recreating life forms from wax molds. Learning the craft exposes Anne Marie, affectionately called Little, to all sorts of infamous French citizens including Marie Antoinette & Napoleon. 👇🏼

Cinfhen Supremely strange and beyond bizarre but just quirky enough to be engaging. Thanks @TrishB for the book!! 🥰 (edited) 5y

This is... a really strange, quirky book. It's deliciously well written but not exactly plot driven. If you like something that moves quickly this will not be for you. Before I started it two people told me they found it boring so I prepared to find it boring too but I actually really enjoyed it! I can see how some would find it slow but I did not. And now I find myself googling all kinds of stuff about Madame Tussaud and her wax figures.
