Heart Goes Last
Heart Goes Last | Margaret Atwood
Margaret Atwood puts the human heart to the ultimate test in an utterly brilliant new novel that is as visionary as"The Handmaid's Tale"and as richly imagined as"The Blind Assassin." Stan and Charmaine are a married couple trying to stay afloat in the midst of an economic and social collapse. Job loss has forced them to live in their car, leaving them vulnerable to roving gangs. They desperately need to turn their situation around and fast. The Positron Project in the town of Consilience seems to be the answer to their prayers. No one is unemployed and everyone gets a comfortable, clean house to live in . . . for six months out of the year. On alternating months, residents of Consilience must leave their homes and function as inmates in the Positron prison system. Once their month of service in the prison is completed, they can return to their "civilian" homes. At first, this doesn't seem like too much of a sacrifice to make in order to have a roof over one's head and food to eat. But when Charmaine becomes romantically involved with the man who lives in their house during the months when she and Stan are in the prison, a series of troubling events unfolds, putting Stan's life in danger. With each passing day, Positron looks less like a prayer answered and more like a chilling prophecy fulfilled."

Got to page 157 and decided to bail. I hate every single character.
It had such potential, and to start with, I was drawn in. But I've just got no interest in what is going on at all. Atwood is a talented writer, no doubt about that, but I find her books so hit and miss.

This book was disturbing and creepy and wrong…but I couldn‘t stop reading it! It‘s a tale of a couple trying to escape poverty so they sign up to a ‘utopia‘, but of course, it‘s not what was promised. The characters were openly flawed and unlikeable, yet I wanted to know more. Atwood‘s writing is just delectable. Highly recommend. Oil lo

Unemployed and living in their car, Stan and Charmaine are given the opportunity to live in a new type of community where everyone gets their own home and jobs but spend every month in the town prison. I have heard so many negative things about this book that I didn‘t expect to like it but while it won‘t rank with my favorite Atwoods I was thoroughly entertained. #blackjack21 #booked2021

I wanted to love this book and was intrigued by the synopsis. Margaret Atwood is one of my favorite writers. However, I was very disappointed. Many parts were cliched and predictable. It seemed very similar to a show I have seen before. I did not like the plot or character development. I did not think Atwood's writing was as eloquent in this one. It's not a book that will stick with me. So far, this is my least favorite Atwood work.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Another great Margaret Atwood book. This one reminded me a little bit of The Giver but with a bit of humor. Atwood really knows how to write disturbing scenarios. In this book she adds humor but that does not make what‘s happening any less gross. I recommend this one if you like dystopian novels. This was my No. 7 #bookspin book.

mcctrish It‘s quite wild how MA can make such disturbing realities that are believable if just the right series of events happen 😬 4y

This was on the no wait list through Borrow Box in my library app and I love Margaret Atwood but this cut too close bone at the moment so it took me longer than usual to get through this. I will not be seeking out the other books in the series at this time because of that reason. Basically unemployment has hit a high and some parts of the US are left to anarchy so when a company comes in offering hope, people flock to it. 3/5 stars.

Atwood has done it again! She has created a truly terrifying near future. One with sexbots, unauthorised organ harvesting and neurological sex slavery. But ultimately, this is about choices. What happens when your right to choose is taken away from you? And is it better to be free or secure? ⁣I have no idea what this has such low ratings. Yes, all the characters are deplorable and the plot is shocking, but it is such a thought provoking book.

The story starts with Stan and Germaine living in their smelly car because times are tough. They get “accepted” into a utopian society that promises work and homes for all. ‘Nuff said you are in for a ride with this one. Great characters, plot twists and at times...scary.

Yes, maybe it‘s me, but, at the moment, I don‘t seem to choose books I like. Or characters that I can relate to.

This one: Yawn 🥱‼️
Is it really by highly praised queen of creepy, almost-real, dystopian stories Margaret Atwood❓🤔

It‘s booooring. I don‘t like any of the characters and at slightly > page 100 this seems to be a plot stolen of “1984”, of the “Pleasantville”-film, and of Dave Eggers‘ “The Circle”, maybe.

No captivating rehash. 😟

Scochrane26 I haven‘t tried this one. She‘s written so many books. I‘ve read 7-8 of hers but only about half are favorites. 5y

Seems, I‘m having slight issues with both of my current reads.

This one I really liked – but then something very foreseeable happened. And now I notice that I‘m reluctant picking it back up, even though Margaret Atwood is an author that gets so much love here on Litsy.

Anyway, I‘ll force myself to put my nose back in and hope that the story will raise my interest again.

(It‘s the first time ever I made muffins. They turned out quite well. 😋)

annamatopoetry Now I want to make chocolate muffins! I don't think my stomach would like that. Maybe blueberry though... 5y
Buechersuechtling @annamatopoetry 🤎 I tried raspberry-oatmeal-muffins yesterday because I felt my chocolate muffins were a bit floury but overall a success. And yeah, my raspberry-oatmeal-muffins are good to. But when it comes to preparing time the chocolate variation definitely wins. Hope your blueberry muffins were delicious, too. 5y

This bizarre, disturbing dystopian tale was a great follow-up re-read after the Testaments. Margaret Atwood does totalitarian dystopia very skillfully. I feel like it's hard to say much without spoiling all the wild twists and turns this book takes. Great audiobook!

Project TBR 2020: the lowest rated books on my Goodreads want-to-read 😬are these really that bad?

ChasingOm I really liked THE HEART GOES LAST. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 5y
CaroPi Many complain but I agree with @ChasingOm The heart goes last is a good book. Don't get intimidated by the goodreads ratings. We all have different taste. Ratings are very subjective. I also see books I really dislike with high rating.. Just enjoy your TBR! 5y
RainyDayReading I'm reading The Furies right now and I'm rather enjoying it. Granted I'm only about 1/3rd of the way through but I'm planning to keep going with it. So I wouldn't say that it's that bad. 5y
Librarybelle I really liked The Lifeboat, but it‘s a complicated, dark story. It‘s definitely not for everyone, but I seem to like stories involving very unlikeable characters. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 5y

A truly bizarre book, I can honestly say I didn‘t predict any of the plot turns. I still don‘t know how I feel about the ending but I can definitely say it was a huge surprise. The ending was just... very unexpected and I may genuinely have nightmares about it. Not perfect but then I don‘t really like dystopian novels, and I think I enjoyed this about as much as I could enjoy one.

My 3rd audio book ( and #67 in total) this year and absolutely crazy town! It‘s set in a dystopian future where an economic collapse has further separated the have and have not classes. Enterprising individuals create jobs and living accommodations for those down on their luck. Then it goes bat shit crazy with sex robots and face transplants and baby blood infusions. What the hell Margaret! What a ride of a novel

Cathythoughts I read this for Bookclub! Pretty crazy alright. What a beautiful house ❤️👍🏻 5y

Scochrane26 That looks like one of my rooms. 5y
mcctrish @Scochrane26 of course it was like a game of dominoes because I wanted the 2 fans out of there ( who even put them there 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️) so that meant reorganizing the laundry room shelves. Whoche led to a purge of craft supplies and a reorganization of sports equipment and dusting and vacuuming there. Then moving some out of season sports stuff to the mud room. Then going through hangers in the mud room and checking the boys rooms. And on. And on 5y

So this was my first Atwood book and I can‘t believe I hadn‘t read any of her books. To be honest I alway thought she wrote scary stuff like Steven king I‘m a wimp. This book is a wild ride! A couple looses everything when the economy tanks badly, and they are living in their car. They hear about a community that is self sufficient, where residents take turns, a month at a time, living in a jail and serving the community, then enjoying a month in the community, like a suburban dream. Then things get crazy.

I loved all the bizarre twists, the mind control and manipulation. Definitely 👍👍.

As expected I enjoyed this Atwood audiobook! I was gonna read the hard copy but I‘m glad I went with the audio. I enjoyed that the way it switched from the male reader to the female reader. I enjoyed the way Atwood showed two sides of the story with through the differing perspectives of Stan and Charmaine. This book is dark, kinky, intriguing. A great story with great characters!

Un grande NI.
Originale, ben scritto, piuttosto scorrevole,...eppure dispersivo nelle tematiche.
