The Good Good Pig
The Good Good Pig: The Extraordinary Life of Christopher Hogwood | Sy Montgomery
22 posts | 21 read | 16 to read
Christopher Hogwood came home on my lap in a shoebox. He was a creature who would prove in many ways to be more human than I am. from The Good Good Pig A naturalist who spent months at a time living on her own among wild creatures in remote jungles, Sy Montgomery had always felt more comfortable with animals than with people. So she gladly opened her heart to a sick piglet who had been crowded away from nourishing meals by his stronger siblings. Yet Sy had no inkling that this piglet, later named Christopher Hogwood, would not only survive but flourishand she soon found herself engaged with her small-town community in ways she had never dreamed possible. Unexpectedly, Christopher provided this peripatetic traveler with something she had sought all her life: an anchor (eventually weighing 750 pounds) to family and home. The Good Good Pig celebrates Christopher Hogwood in all his glory, from his inauspicious infancy to hog heaven in rural New Hampshire, where his boundless zest for life and his large, loving heart made him absolute monarch over a (mostly) peaceable kingdom. At first, his domain included only Sys cosseted hens and her beautiful border collie, Tess. Then the neighbors began fetching Christopher home from his unauthorized jaunts, the little girls next door started giving him warm, soapy baths, and the villagers brought him delicious leftovers. His intelligence and fame increased along with his girth. He was featured in USA Today and on several National Public Radio environmental programs. On election day, some voters even wrote in Christophers name on their ballots. But as this enchanting book describes, Christopher Hogwoods influence extended far beyond celebrity; for he was, as a friend said, a great big Buddha master. Sy reveals what she and others learned from this generous soul who just so happened to be a piglessons about self-acceptance, the meaning of family, the value of community, and the pleasures of the sweet green Earth. The Good Good Pig provides proof that with love, almost anything is possible. From the Hardcover edition.

Sy Montgomery has a way of blending nature writing, or in this case barnyard animal writing, with personal anecdotes which I relate too. In this book she tells of the life of her pig Chris, who she and her husband adopted as a tiny runt and kept as a pet for his 14 years of life. She also writes of some of her travels and losing both her parents.

Chris‘ joy in eating may be my favorite part 😋😆🐷.

“Christopher Hogwood came home on my lap in a shoe box.”

I love Sy Montgomery‘s nature writing, and I‘ve had this book on my shelf for at least a year. Time to read about a good good pig 🙂❤️📚.

AmyG I want a piglet in a shoebox! 1y
Soubhiville @AmyG be careful what you wish for! 😆🐷. When I was working at the animal shelter in NC, we had a pig with us for a few months, and I became pretty close with her. 💕 I was so happy to find a sanctuary to take her. 1y

My first Sy Montgomery book was Soul of an Octopus, which I loved. I hoped this book, a much earlier one, might have some similarities, and it does. It‘s the story of Christopher, an extraordinary pig and the community that fed him, loved him, and were so very grateful for the ways in which he touched their lives.

Today we had to run some stock down to the Great Lakes Medieval Festival, so we decided to spend the afternoon checking out the faire. This is Snorkel. He is a potbelly show pig who is part of a trained pig act. He is also an artist and painted this bookmark with his snout. 🧡🐷

The last year has been really hard on all of us in the festival scene, so it was nice to be able to show support and tip the performers we saw today.

Excellent book. Sy Montgomery has a magical way of describing her interactions with animals. She highlights that it is important to take time to enjoy the world around us. Her writing is lyrical without being overly verbose or grandiose.

ShelleyBooksie @melissajayne - I got a notice they were unable to leave the parcel at your home. If Cda Post in BC runs like here in NB you may only have a certain number of days to pick up the parcel before they send it back. 3y
melissajayne @ShelleyBooksie I got the notification in my mailbox and am going to pick the parcel up from the post office either Monday or Tuesday (edited) 3y

I keep seeing other littens talking about Sy Montgomery's books, so when I saw this one with no hold at the library- I grabbed it! You guys were so right! I can't wait to find more of her books to read. This was the story of Montgomery's own pig, Christopher and how he changed not only her life, but the lives of so many people. I'm glad I was the only one in the work room today, because I was sobbing at the end of this good good pig's story. 🐖❤

GondorGirl This was my #PetsOfLitsy inspired book for @Bookishmarginalia's #LLB19, a.s week as my animal themed non-fiction read for @Riveted_Reader_Melissa's #NonFiction2019. 6y

Definitely not a read for the anti-anthropomorphising set, but a sweet, cheerful story for anyone who has had an animal make a difference in their lives. Sy Montgomery lovingly relays the great impact one little (well, little for a while) pig had on her life and the lives of all who encountered him. An excellent comfort read if life is giving you a hard time.
