WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY MARGARET ATWOOD A note from The Editor: I feel it incumbent upon me to explain how this wonderful and mysterious history found its way into my hands. I received a letter and two parcels- one a manuscript, the other containing a scarab and an ancient sherd - from a brief acquaintance of mine called Mr Horace Holly. Mr Holly and his ward Leo Vincey had passed through a most uncommon African adventure, a tale of a nature so marvellous that I fear the reader might disbelieve it. To me the story seems to bear the stamp of truth upon its face. But I must leave the reader to form his own judgment... And with this explanation I introduce the world to Ayesha - She-who-must-be-obeyed - and the Caves of Kr.

Espero pronto leer el resto de los libros en la, si no mal estoy, trilogía, y también leerlos en inglés. Muy buen libro.

This one has been on my TBR for a while for a few reasons, and I‘m glad I chose audio when I finally got to it. Overall, it was an interesting listen with key aspects of many adventure stories but also some slow parts that would have made it a long print read.

I am going to read this soonish. It definitely fits the prompt of ADVENTURE, let‘s see how dated it is in terms of race and gender roles. I don‘t have huge expectations, however.

Thanks very much to @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks and @TheKidUpstairs for hosting #LitsySpringBreak . It‘s been fun! 😀

I was hoping for a more rollicking adventure story, but I had forgotten how ploddingly descriptive 19th C novels can be. Some of the language/characterizations are, how shall we say?...outdated. But it could have been worse! The chief of the African tribe is more humane and well-rounded than one of the white men. And the antagonist, She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed, is a light-skinned woman from the Arabic world. All in all, not the worst thing I‘ve read.

Daisey I want to read this, yet I think this review gives me realistic expectations. 4y

Totally in two minds about this book! Overlooking the racist, sexist and imperialist views the actual plot line is really quite good and if you like Victorian gothic sort of stories you‘ll be tempted to forgive the dated attitudes. ‘She‘ is a fantastic character and for that reason I‘m looking forward to studying the text in September, but whilst some of the story is straight out of Indiana Jones you also get 15 pages travelling through a swamp🤔

I‘m listening to this because it was free and sounded different. I have a problem with the racism in the story (I know it was a “different time”). Also, it‘s very chauvanistic and there are so many monologues that repeat information that I‘ve started to zone out during them. Of course the woman has mysterious ways that beguile a man through her beauty, so he‘s never at fault. Literally, I‘m only still listening because I‘m a completionist.

Finally finished this one! 🙌
I did enjoyed the story line, and when things happened they were interesting and exciting, but they were spread so far apart by rambling discourse and unnecessary scenes and descriptions that felt like they went on forever 😴
I had to keep leaving&coming back every few days, just so that I didn't get bogged down and lose patience.
A good story, but a slog!

Considering how many distractions my 'nice, quiet weekend' turned out to have I got a fair amount of reading in time wise... but after finishing Born in Fire my focus was all over the place so not as much progress in anything as I'd have liked 🤔
Only 50 pages left of the tagged and things have been progressing nicely at last... fingers crossed for the wrap up 🤞

I'm having a bit of a tough time with this book - its turned into a real love-hate thing!
On the one hand, the adventure and the story line are very interesting. The idea of a legacy passed down for thousands of years, and a journey of discovery and revenge are all very compelling for me, and this book (mostly) does them well...
However, there were 17 pages about how they walked through a swamp. It could have been done in 2 pages!

I really enjoyed this! It's such a great adventure! A white immortal woman, living in the heart of Africa? What's NOT to like? I can't wait to read Haggard's other stuff! Side note: avoid the movie version...unless you enjoy terrible-and-not-in-a-good-way movies....😄 44/1,001 #1001Books

#photoadaynov16 #inspiring for day 3. Many years ago my mom was given some books that were her grandma's and nestled amongst them were several travel pocket books from around 1920 . She was one of them I was curious what kind of books my great nana liked to read so I picked this one not knowing anything about it. I loved it and it has since inspired my reading of classics and other books that I would not normally have picked to read.

brilliantglow I found this edition at a goodwill bookstore for $1. I had to pick it up for myself. 8y
