Cassel comes from a family of curse workers--people who have the power to change your emotions, your memories, your luck, all by the slightest touch of their hands. Since curse work is illegal, they're all criminals. But not Cassel. He hasn't got the magic touch, so he's an outsider--the straight kid in a crooked family--as long as you ignore one small detail: He killed his best friend, Lila. Now he is sleepwalking, propelled into the night by terrifying dreams about a white cat. He also notices that his brothers are keeping secrets from him. As Cassel begins to suspect he's part of one huge con game, he must unravel his past and his memories. To find out the truth, Cassel will have to outcon the conmen.

Quite an interesting story full of magic and secrets. The story line was well thought through, some of the "curses" the magically gifted had were very uncomfortable (which I guess they were meant to be). I loved the fact that in this book the "magic comes with a price" trope was protrayed very well. You can kill people with magic? Well, in return your fingers will blacken and fall off. Overall I enjoyed the book but didn't fall in love with it.

A story about curse workers who all have varying skills from messing with your emotions, to your life, to transformation. I don‘t think I will be moving on to the next book for this one but it was a quick read.

I really enjoyed this! The world this story is set in is mainly like our own. The big difference is the existence of “Curse Workers,“ who are able to perform various types of magic through the touch of their hand. For this reason, everyone in this world wears gloves and Curse Workers are looked upon with suspicion.

Holly Black‘s older work is so much better than her Cruel Prince series. (Unpopular opinion maybe?) This book is about a teen who grows up in family of magic users, called Curseworkers, in a world where working magic is illegal. This book also features con artists and different crime families who use magic to control people and stay in power. It is dark, gritty and such a fun read!
(Too bad it suffers from an ugly, early 2000s, YA fantasy cover)

Booksblanketsandahotbeverage I loved this series so much ❤️ 5y

Not for me. It takes up to page 160 until some parts of the plot are set together … And until then nothing could really convince me. It‘s fantasy meets mafia – but boring.

The world building seems immature. And everybody is lying and manipulating … Additionally, I just feel the two volumes to come are just to drag a non-existing teenie-plot.

Nothing I want to read.

I‘m out. No more young adult series for me.

julesG The older I get, the less interesting fantasy YA books become. Most follow the same stupid pattern, dragged out over three volumes. 6y
Buechersuechtling Seems I have to experience that over and over and over again. 🙄 It _sounded_ interesting. But it isn‘t. When do I learn❓😟 6y
vumblereads I struggle with YA too although there are some pretty good ones out there. This is a favorite of mine: 6y

@BookaholicNatty Almost half through. The plot is a bit chaotic, isn‘t it❓
Dunno, can‘t describe it better …
I‘m already having an idea how all could be connected.
And whenever Cassel tells an anecdote about Lila I wonder why he doesn‘t even get suspicious.

I am not sure if Cassandra Clare saying “Dangerous, gorgeous dark fantasy” makes me think that this is a good book that I definitely need to read.

The one book I read by her was an unbearable kitschy book. So I better don‘t set my expectations too high …

My next read. Thanks to @BookaholicNatty I‘m really curious how I will like it.

(It‘s a trilogy – what I meanwhile had forgotten.)

BookaholicNatty I can‘t wait to hear what you think!!! I will be reading this trilogy over the summer for sure! 6y

I tried really hard to read and enjoy this book back in 2013, but I really just couldn‘t get into it. I‘m not a quitter but I did have to bail on this one.

@BookaholicNatty Look, what I accidentally came across on my wish list. Vol. 1 of “The Curse”-trilogy.

They also have Vol. 2 („Roter Zauber“) and 3 („Schwarzes Herz“). But I think I didn‘t put them on my wish list on purpose because I wanted to see if I‘d like the series, first.

I never came across Holly Black before and it‘s funny how my attitude changed from “indifferent” to “I should read this, I know someone who‘s enthralled.” 😄

BookaholicNatty Woooooohoooooo!!!!🎉🎉🎉🎉 6y
BookaholicNatty I haven‘t read these yet but I‘m sure they just as fabulous as all her other books!!! I‘m just taken away by her books and I haven‘t come across one that I didn‘t love!!! Please let me know what you think about it once you read it! ❤️ 6y
Buechersuechtling You bet I will‼️ At the moment I am not in the mood for a book series. Which can change quickly. And since my resolution for this reading year is to diminish my wish list at my library to about half of what it was on New Year‘s Eve I‘m pretty sure I will pick this up somewhere during 2019. 6y

This book centers around Cassel, a 17 year old boy born into a family of "workers." He seems to be the only one in the family without powers, but soon realizes that his memories are being changed. Who is manipulating them and why?

This was fun to read. Cassel is conflicted. He wants to be good, but he is drawn into the criminal world of his family. In this world, you can‘t trust your own memories, because they can easily be changed with a touch.

Jenny I ADORE this series! I need to reread it. 7y

I love Holly Black! When I read this 7ish years ago there were ALL sorts of #supernatural books out. Especially YA. This was different. I enjoyed the series immensely. I read the 1st two back to back and had to wait a year for the third.

I really enjoy Holly Black's world building & that is, perhaps, the real strength of this book. The premise is simple enough. Cassel Sharpe killed his best friend, a crime his family covered up for him, and now lives life trying to make up for that terrible act, a moment which still haunts him. There is more going on, however, much more. Curse workers, mafia, cats, secrets, & intense family dynamics combine for a wild & entertaining read.

I found this story to be quite interesting, though at times I found myself confused about the laws of the magic and what was going on in the audiobook. Overall I enjoyed it and would continue on with the series.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ of 5

BookFreakOut I liked the idea of blowback being specific to their type of magic, rather than just general exhaustion. Enjoyed this one. 8y
AlexandraGriffin @BookFreakOut agreed! I thought that was really interesting. I also liked the crime family element to it 8y
BookFreakOut Yes! I kept thinking that this is what would happen if the Xmen turned to the dark side, especially if Charles Xavier organized them that way rather than just being a few rogue outliers. 8y
AlexandraGriffin @BookFreakOut yes!! I totally get that! And it's nice for once seeing an alternate view than the typical story of "people with power being alienated and trying to prove they're good guys". 8y

Enjoyed this magical take on crime families and public fear of "workers." I liked how using the powers had a blowback effect on the user that was specific to their power, rather than just general exhaustion from focusing and grunting really hard. Full of fabulously not-nice people who still manage to make you root for their family, if only for the sake of Cassel, who at least occasionally tries to have good intentions. Thanks @AlisonC for the rec!

Suzze Love the hashtags! 😜 8y

I went to my first Halloween party of the year tonight and it was fantastic. My husband and I plus our two little boys make four so we decided to go as Ninja Turtles this year and my little ones were rocking it 😍

Also White Cat by Holly Black looked very Halloweeny but ended up seeming more like a dark magic/con book, not that that's a bad thing but it wasn't quite what I was expecting.

I can't handle bad text speak in books written for teens by adults. This is how my mother texts me. I've never seen anyone else try to text like this. I'm very annoyed and I hope there aren't any big text conversations I'll have to endure.

Sharanya There aren't as far as I can remember! Funny, the texting gives me a twinge of annoyance too, but then, any sentence where someone uses "u" instead of "you" annoys me so I didn't pay much attention to it. 8y

That was...something else. An intricate setting with complicated themes. The plot kept me interested, despite how loooong it took for it to get moving. Cassel was aloof, yet his reactions to & relationships with others intriguing. An interesting opening to a promising trilogy. ★★★☆☆.
