Los Miserables / Les Miserables
Los Miserables / Les Miserables | Victor Hugo
25 posts | 14 read | 3 reading | 8 to read
ENGLISH DESCRIPTION Les Miserables is a French historical novel by Victor Hugo, first published in 1862, that is considered one of the greatest novels of the 19th century. In the English-speaking world, the novel is usually referred to by its original French title. However, several alternatives have been used, including The Miserables, The Wretched, The Miserable Ones, The Poor Ones, The Wretched Poor, The Victims and The Dispossessed. Beginning in 1815 and culminating in the 1832 June Rebellion in Paris, the novel follows the lives and interactions of several characters, particularly the struggles of ex-convict Jean Valjean and his experience of redemption. Examining the nature of law and grace, the novel elaborates upon the history of France, the architecture and urban design of Paris, politics, moral philosophy, antimonarchism, justice, religion, and the types and nature of romantic and familial love. Les Miserables has been popularized through numerous adaptations for the stage, television, and film, including a musical and a film adaptation of that musical. The appearance of the novel was highly anticipated and advertised. Critical reactions were diverse, but most of them were negative. Commercially, the work was a great success globally.

I missed yesterday's #julyjourneys #bastilleday
Les Mis isn't really about Bastille day, but it is about the French rising up and saying they have had enough ❤️
Welcome to my kitchen, and thanks Pinterest for this knife block idea that I have been using for a few years now

“Then he sat down upon the steps, his heart full of tenderness and resolution, he blessed his love in the depths of his thought, and he said to himself that since Cosette was gone, there was nothing more for him but to die.”

Don‘t mind me. I‘m just eye rolling super hard while gagging at the same time.

The last 400 pages were a decent read, the first 800 not so much. Tons of characters were introduced apparently to allow Author to dive into some obscure obsession and then they were gone. On the other hand, in a city the size of Paris when one character was attempting to hideout there was a ridiculous number of coincidental meetings. Jean valjean, the Bishop, and Gavroche were great. Marius was a moron and Cosette insipid. No more big books!

My three new B&N collectable editions came todsy! I grabbed these during the 3 for $25 sale. I really really wanted to get six but it's harder to hide six massive tomes 😂😅

I've been wanting to replace my old bind up of Poe for years, and I am so in love with the filigree on both Sherlock and Les Miserables 😍😍

Caroline2 Beautiful! 😍 6y
GingerAntics Those are gorgeous!!! 💙💙💙 6y
Burghbookaddict I ordered the Poe one too! My other 2 were the H.P. Lovecraft and Dracula. I thought about grabbing 3 more but they're so big and I'm already out of room! 6y

Day 3 of #requiredreadingredo... I‘m so so sorry about this one... I LOVE Les Mis the musical. Almost obsessively. It‘s playing in my car now in fact... but this book was hard and heavy and I read it very young. I also didn‘t “read” and instead listened to the audio book, so that could have contributed to my dislike. #lesmis #24601 @ErinSueG

night_shift Haven't read this one. Too huge for me to want to try lol .. not a fan of musicals either, sooo. 😂 6y
AshleyHoss820 This one is on my TBR for the 1,001 list. I saw the play on a revolving stage and I was never the same! Gorgeous! I‘m a little nervous about reading the book. 😊 6y
DGRachel Oh no! I LOVED this one. The (600+ page) abridged version was assigned to my gifted English class in 10th grade and I even read the unabridged version for extra credit! 6y
See All 10 Comments
WhiskeyMistress @DGRachel I was homeschooled and my mothers assigned reading was... interesting... so I got handed this assignment in Eighth grade 😂 I really enjoyed the story part, but the long extraneous bits about disease, economy, and the Paris infrastructure just didn‘t work for me at 13. I probably should try again. 6y
TiredLibrarian @WhiskeyMistress I tried twice to read this one, and I never made it further than the sewers of Paris. I love the musical & have seen several different productions of it, but the book is not for me! 6y
Meaw_catlady Mom also assigned me to read this. But me a rebel, refused after 10 pages... I need to try again now that I‘m not a youngling. There, out in the darkness
A fugitive running
Fallen from God
Fallen from grace
God be my witness
I never shall yield
Till we come face to face
Till we come face to face
6y
WhiskeyMistress @Meaw_catlady, sadly, the book doesn‘t have musical numbers 😂 6y
Crewgurl I also obsessively love the musical! I might have seen it on broadway 19 times... 6y
WhiskeyMistress @Crewgurl 🙊 I‘m so jealous! 6y
Crewgurl I still need more 😭😭😭 6y

A few hours late for my prompt, but oh well.

Last night was a gorgeous night for reading a few chapters outside! Yes, I‘m STILL reading Les Mis. I‘m probably close to 3/4 of the way through. It‘s been a long time since I‘ve taken so long to finish a book other than the Bible, but I‘ve been enjoying it when I‘m able to read! #WineWednesday #ReadingResolutions

Ah! Little Cosette is now with Valjean and all is right in the world.

While Book Second on the Battle of Waterloo was rough, I feel like Book Third was the reward for having made it through. Valjean‘s role as Cosette‘s redeemer is just perfect.

Also, I can‘t stop hearing the songs from the musical keep going through my head. 😂🎶
