Willoughby's Return
Willoughby's Return: A tale of almost irresistible temptation | Jane Odiwe
16 posts | 9 read | 20 to read
A lost love returns, rekindling forgotten passions In Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility, when Marianne Dashwood marries Colonel Brandon, she puts her heartbreak over dashing scoundrel John Willoughby in the past. Three years later, Willoughby's return throws Marianne into a tizzy of painful memories and exquisite feelings of uncertainty. Willoughby is as charming, as roguish, and as much in love with her as ever. And the timing couldn't be worsewith Colonel Brandon away and Willoughby determined to win her back, will Marianne find the strength to save her marriage, or will the temptation of a previous love be too powerful to resist? Praise for Lydia Bennet's Story: "A breathtaking Regency romp!" Diana Birchall, author of Mrs. Darcy's Dilemma "An absolute delight to read." Historical Novels Review "Odiwe emulates Austen's famous wit, and manages to give Lydia a happily-ever-after ending worthy of any Regency romance heroine." Booklist "Odiwe pays nice homage to Austen's stylings and endears the reader to the formerly secondary character, spoiled and impulsive Lydia Bennet." Publisher's Weekly "Rollicking good fun with a surprise twist." Austenprose

This book was deliciously terrible. The writing was inconsistent, the obsession with shopping was weird (and was that word even used in the early 1800s?!) and the plot was predictable. But it was delicious. Perfect fluff for summer.

sprainedbrain Damn Willoughby for being such a dish. 😂 4y

Definite pick!

Jane Austen she is not, but Odiwe did a nice job continuing the story of Marianne, Brandon, and Willoughby, a few years after S&S left them, with the addition of a grown-up story for Margaret. I missed Elinor, was frustrated with Marianne‘s regression, the Brandons behavior toward each other and with Willoughby‘s behavior in general, but I had also moments of ‘omg John Willoughby is a sexy beast.‘ 🤷🏻‍♀️

Addictive fun!

⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

sprainedbrain Also, so glad that Marianne is still being carried around by Willoughby and Brandon in a regular basis. And Lucy Ferrars, née Steele is still a nasty bitch. ? #PemberLittens 4y
mollyrotondo I thought it was so funny that Willoughby has to rescue Marianne again from a fall and a twisted ankle. I think he picks her a few times lol and yes Lucy is still a wretched beast! 4y
sprainedbrain @mollyrotondo he had to pick her up from ankle-related injuries twice. Poor girl has very delicate ankles I guess. And the Colonel has to haul her up from the seaside. 😂 4y

MicrobeMom Agreed! I feel most of the book is really about Margaret. Thus, I found the title misleading. However, this did not stop me from enjoying it. Like enjoyed the writing and pace of the book. I always wanted to keep reading! Thanks for the great read-a-long. 4y
kspenmoll This was fun to read and I live all your comments re: Marianne being carried etc. Lucy‘s gossipy nastiness was splendid. Great review. @sprainedbrain @mollyrotondo 4y
Revenge4bess Too bad that my B&N doesn‘t get the print version. All they get is the ebook 4y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #pemberlittens
Oh my gosh this book was so guilty pleasure for me! There definitely things that I did not like, like not enough Elinor and Marianne and Brandon were sort of frustrating, but I couldn‘t stop reading! I needed to know what was going to happen between Margaret and Henry. And every time Willoughby showed up I got stressed because he‘s such a jerk! I loved it and recommend to any Sense and Sensibility fan.

Revenge4bess I‘m thinking about getting this adaptation. Is it worth it? 4y
mollyrotondo @Revenge4bess oh yes I think it‘s very worth it! A guilty pleasure! You might not like some of the choices but it didn‘t even matter because it still hooked me. And it‘s a very quick read too. 4y
Revenge4bess Ok. Should I read the original book first? 4y
mollyrotondo @Revenge4bess oh yes you should definitely read the original sense and sensibility since Willoughby‘s Return is very much a sequel. 4y

While Willoughby has definitely returned, this book seems more about Margaret Dashwood to me, and I‘m cool with that!

Marianne and Brandon are annoying me with their inability to communicate openly, and Marianne is showing a lot of her old sensibility.

Margaret is basicially Marianne 2, and there is something not at all straightforward going on with Henry and his French girl.

But LA! Anne Steele is still in pursuit of beaux! 😂

#PemberLittens

Librarybelle I know! I‘m kinda annoyed by Marianne and Brandon as well. 4y
TheAromaofBooks I haven't been reading along with this one as I planned to do, but am definitely enjoying the updates!! 😂 4y
catebutler I agree with everything you said. 👍🏼 I always felt Margaret would be more balanced, a mix between her two older sisters. But her Marianne side is definitely coming out, thus far! Looking forward to seeing how everything progresses. 4y

mollyrotondo I find Marianne and Brandon‘s marriage extremely frustrating. He‘s way too over the top with the visits to Eliza. It‘s too much. Marianne is right to feel dismissed when he goes away so often. But she also is terrible about communicating. I like Margaret and feel bad that she‘s being shown up by this French girl. But I‘m excited to find out what it is Henry and the French girl are hiding! 4y
sprainedbrain @catebutler @mollyrotondo @Librarybelle I‘ve reached the point with this book that I don‘t want to stretch it out anymore... I have to know what‘s going to happen so I will probably finish tonight. 😃 4y
mollyrotondo @sprainedbrain I am trying to finish today too lol I also wanted to say that I‘m a little sad that Elinor isn‘t really in the story 😢 4y
sprainedbrain @mollyrotondo yes! That is such a bummer. And when she is the author is making her too sensible. More than I think Elinor would be. 4y
mollyrotondo @sprainedbrain I agree. She is happy to stay home and not go shopping or take a trip to London? It doesn‘t feel right 4y
janeycanuck I fell a bit behind but caught up today. Henry is definitely Willoughby 2.0. Margaret is Marianne 2.0. I agree with @mollyrotondo that I want more Elinor! I‘m enjoying the emphasis on Margaret but yeah, the marriage between Brandon and Marianne is bordering on ridiculous. It‘ll be interesting to see how this wraps up! I‘m going to be finishing it soon - but only because my download expires in 4 days!! 4y
mollyrotondo @janeycanuck I did not expect Elinor to be pretty much absent from this book. I just finished tonight so I can‘t wait to read what everyone thinks of the conclusion! I see this author has a sequel to Pride and Prejudice so I‘m definitely adding that to my list to read! 4y
meghathecloud I had fallen behind and went to catch up but ended up finishing it last night. I agree with everyone about Marriane and Brandon's inability to communicate being frustrating. And one thing that irks me is both Margaret and Marriane keep thinking what will Elinor do when they are on the verge of doing something stupid but don't ask her what she will actually do🤷. Summer school done for the week!!! Ended with a rousing, hilarious, game of “Would You Rather.” Time for Marianne‘s rather narcissistic world.

Seems almost like Marianne has regressed in some ways. Only on ch.5 but she is not likable! Margaret seems more mature.

sprainedbrain I agree... she‘s back to where she was pre-near death and I don‘t like that! 4y

As you can see, I am only 10% in. I ended up buying the book for my kindle; otherwise shipping times seemed to be too long.
It seems that Marianne has matured with marriage and motherhood, but the smitten Colonel indulges her. She is troubled by his devoted relationship to Eliza & Lizzie, but hesitates to discuss this with him. Taking Margaret shopping & scheming about a match is occupying her day.

sprainedbrain I bought the kindle version for the same reason! 4y

I‘m invested in this story now... once I got past/used to the things that were annoying me (I know that nobody writes just like Jane, but all of those inner thoughts in quotations were making me crazy), I found that I‘m very much interested in seeing what happens!

I will post my thoughts in the comments.

What does everyone think so far?

sprainedbrain John was referred to at one point as the stepbrother of the girls, and that annoyed me. Marianne is still goofy (so much sensibility!)—she and the colonel don‘t communicate, and that‘s frustrating me. I like having more Margaret, but my gosh, she‘s like Marianne 2.

Elinor seems stodgy and uptight in this... I don‘t think of her that way. Mrs. Jennings is delightful (and exhausting) as ever.

I‘m getting some Willoughby vibes off of Henry. 🤔
4y
meghathecloud I am so apprehensive about Henry, and hoping this doesn't turn out to be just a rehash of Marriane and Willoughby with names changed. Also, Marriane in this is pre-illness Marriane...which is a little disappointing but don't know what I was expecting. (edited) 4y
mollyrotondo Henry is definitely going to be Willoughby 2. I don‘t trust him at all. I am so sad that this author things Marianne would be jealous of Eliza and that Brandon and her would have terrible communication skills. I also don‘t know if it makes sense for Willoughby to come back around after 5 years. I don‘t love how our characters have turned out in this author‘s continuation but I am still highly intrigued to find out what happens lol. 4y

janeycanuck The writing is, at best, inconsistent. The plot is ridiculous. And I love it. This is the regency/Georgian soap opera I need in my life right now. I agree with everyone‘s comments about the characters, especially Elinor being stodgy and Margaret being Marianne v2. 4y
Librarybelle My copy finally arrived on Friday! I will need to play catch-up - may not get this week‘s reading done today, but we‘ll see! 4y
MicrobeMom I also found the thoughts quotes was annoying. I was also annoyed that she choose to not allow Marianne to mature and that she is still self-center and shallow. Also Elinor is even more uptight than in the original. I have gotten past all these things and I am very much enjoying this. Looking forward to starting the second set of chapters tonight. 4y
sprainedbrain @MicrobeMom I feel like it‘s definitely a step back for Marianne. I think she was way more grown up at the end of S&S. 4y
catebutler I feel the same. The more I read, the more I enjoy it though, and I do love seeing Margaret being drawn out more fully in this novel. Surprisingly I‘m not loving Elinor, seems a bit stiffer than usual. Edward is still a milksop though.... 😂 4y

For those (like me) who can‘t wait to see what happens when THIS JERK returns... a buddy read of this intriguing JA fanfic. 😃

Tagging the #PemberLittens who have said they might want to join me, but everyone is welcome!

Will this schedule work? I‘m open to changes if needed. Also, do we want to discuss on a weekly Litsy post on Sundays, starting 7/12, or do you prefer Slack or Goodreads?

mollyrotondo Love all of this! Either platform works for me. Sunday also sounds great! 5y

I have an affinity for books that try to continue or retell classics. For Austen, there are a ton, especially for P&P, but I haven't seen a S&S continuation before, which made this a TBR and it fulfills my first letter on my #LitsyAtoZ for #LetterW. I ended up rooting for both Brandon and Willoughby at times, knowing how Marianne loves them both deeply in different ways. I wished there'd been more Elinor but this was Marianne's continued story.
