W is for Wasted: A Kinsey Millhone Novel 23
W is for Wasted: A Kinsey Millhone Novel 23 | Sue Grafton
Book 23 in the Kinsey Millhone Alphabet series from the New York Times bestselling author, Sue Grafton. "Two dead bodies changed the course of my life that fall. One of them I knew and the other I'd never laid eyes on until I saw him in the morgue." The first was a local PI of suspect reputation. He'd been gunned down near the beach at Santa Teresa. It looked like a robbery gone bad. The other was on the beach six weeks later. He'd been sleeping rough. Probably homeless. No identification. A slip of paper with Private Investigator Kinsey Millhone's name and number was in his pants pocket. The coroner asked her to come to the morgue to see if she could ID him. Two seemingly unrelated deaths, one a murder, the other apparently of natural causes. But as Kinsey digs deeper into the mystery of the John Doe, some very strange links begin to emerge. And before long at least one aspect is solved as Kinsey finds the key to his identity... In this multi-layered tale, the surfaces seem clear, but the underpinnings are full of betrayals, misunderstandings, and outright murderous fraud. And Kinsey, through no fault of her own, is thoroughly compromised...

Lindsey Milhone is contacted to identify a body. She never met the man, but he‘s a distant relative. As she attempts to learn more about the man, more mysteries pop up. Longer than most of her previous books, it still moves fast. I love trying to compare Santa Theresa with Santa Barbara.

After 20 some books, you know what you‘re getting with a Kinsey novel. This was one of my favorites. It starts with two dead bodies, a homeless man and a shady PI. Then it ties it all together with a devious doctor. We also learn a bit more about Kinsey‘s father‘s history and get some good interaction with her fantastic elderly neighbor Henry. Her old flame Deitz is back for a bit too. Lots of trademark Kinsey snark and a satisfying conclusion.

#manicmonday time!

Book: Wicked by Gregory Maguire

Author: Michelle West

TV Show: maybe Westworld? I don't think I feel strongly about any W media, but I'm INTERESTED in Westworld despite the squicky premise.

Food: white cheddar rice cakes

This was my least favorite of the series so far. Grafton uses two perspectives instead of just Kinsey. It adds nothing. Also, Kinsey seems more petty and selfish than ever. Still, I want to finish the last 2 books in 2018.

BarbaraTheBibliophage I wish there was a way to switch from a Blurb to a Review. Posted this incorrectly the first time. 😰 6y
swynn +1 for that feature. I've done that myself. 6y

I may actually finish this series this year. I‘ve been stringing it out for decades now. Last year I intended to use the #24 book, X, as my #LitsyAtoZ choice for that letter. Then I read something else. Now I‘ve just finished “V is for Vengeance,” the #22 book. So I‘m just going to keep going! I love Kinsey, but with Sue Grafton‘s death, I‘m feeling like it‘s time to finish the series.

Readerann I loved this series. I applaud the family‘s decision to end it and not have someone else write ‘Z‘. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Readerann I absolutely agree about Z. Better to just end at Y. I‘ll be sad to finish ... 6y

Ok but a bit overlong. A 100 page trimming session would have improved things no end. Rating: 3 ⭐️

Another productive Sunday. I've noticed a trend in the later books of the series of multiple narrators and this is sometimes done well by Grafton and sometimes less well. This instance of multiple narrators, I thought, was well done here. One of my favourite books in the series by far.

LETTER W: I have always loved the badass WOMEN King has created. Suzannah Dean is one of my all time favorite characters. I love how he can make you connect with his characters. On some level you connect with them. You understand them you feel for them. You hope for them. You cheer them on. You are them. Love how he can do this.

GarthRanzz Great image! When does she get introduced? I don‘t remember her in book one. 7y
MinDea @GarthRanzz she is introduced in Book 2. The Drawing of the Three. 7y

MinDea Well, I should amend that. Technically she is introduced in book 2 but she is different. @GarthRanzz 7y
GarthRanzz Ok, that makes sense. I‘ve only read book two one tome and only made part way through book three. That‘s why I‘m looking forward to the group read. 😊 7y
MinDea Oh wow so you have read some and you have met her...sort of! I am so pumped for this buddy read! 7y

NetGalley ARC means a #FangirlFriday post. Read my previous one about the Sue Grafton series on ellanathornton-wheybrew.weebly.com

LDuffN I got a copy of this book as well. I had to do a double take when I got the email from #NetGalley because it said "You're pre-approved..." I thought it was some sort of credit card or something. 8y
Reecaspieces I received one as well! 8y
Laura317 I got one too. Not sure when I'll get around to reading it. 8y

Local CVS drugstore had these in a bargain bin yesterday, 2 for $4. Two new hardcovers for $4? Yes, please!

zombie_kitty1987 That's an epic deal 🙉 8y
azulaco @zombie_kitty1987 I know, right? How could I not buy some books at that price? I might not have picked up these titles otherwise (would have used the library for these series, which I like but are not at the top of my reading list) but wow! 8y

I only have 2 left in the series and I'm not okay with that! Kinsey has been such a good friend. Write faster Sue, I'm not ready to be done!

Vexingcircumstance I will likely read these eventually but I'm waiting until they're all released lol. 8y
AliceInWonderLibrary @Vexingcircumstance I thought about that when I started but the last one won't be published until 2019 and I wasn't interested in waiting that long. 8y

MrBook Great pic! Nice ring. 8y
