Maestra | L S Hilton
With the cunning of"Gone Girl" s Amy Dunne, and as dangerous as"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" s Lisbeth Salander, the femme fatale of this"Talented Mr. Ripley" esque psychological thriller is sexy, smart, and very, very bad in all the best ways. By day, Judith Rashleigh is a put-upon assistant at a prestigious London art house. By night, she s a hostess at one of the capital s notorious champagne bars, although her work there pales against her activities on nights off. TO GET WHAT SHE WANTS Desperate to make something of herself, Judith knows she has to play the game. She s transformed her accent and taught herself about wine and the correct use of a dessert fork, not to mention the art of discretion. She s learned to be a good girl. But when Judith is fired for uncovering a dark secret at the heart of the art world and her honest efforts at a better life are destroyed she turns to a long-neglected friend. A friend who kept her chin up and back straight through every slight: Rage. SHE WILL CROSS EVERY LINE Feeling reckless, she accompanies one of the champagne bar s biggest clients to the French Riviera, only to find herself alone again after a fatal accident. Tired of striving and the slow crawl to the top, Judith has a realization: If you need to turn yourself into someone else, loneliness is a good place to start. And she s been lonely a long time. "Maestra "is a glamorous, ferocious thriller and the beginning of a razor-sharp trilogy that introduces the darkly irresistible Judith Rashleigh, a femme fatale for the ages whose vulnerability and ruthlessness will keep you guessing until the last page."

1) *nervous laughter*
Ba hahahahahahhahahahahaahaffnfnnrrhhrjgh
Have I started, more to the point.
Organisation is not my strong point.

2) I'm gonna give a shout out to one of the WORST novels ever written here... in between stabbings and messy sex, our protagonist finds plenty of time to tell us about all the handbags she's bought along the way.

Thrilling stuff. Except it isn't.

1) The worst FICTION book I've ever read was probably Maestra. The author was going for a playful modern Becky Sharp vibe, but it's basically an extended shopping trip with some splatty sex and incongruent murder thrown in.

2) I'm not really up for A Clockwork Orange, American Psycho or anything by de Sade, even though they always make it onto the Books-you-have-to-read list.

Also, Moby Dick.

Would love to hear your answers!

RaeLovesToRead @Yuki_Onna meant to tag you too!! 😄 2y
CBee Ooo! I‘ll have to have a think 🤔 Especially the 1st one, hmm…. Thanks for the tag, Rae ♥️ 2y

Branwen Oooooh I love this! How fun! 😀💕📚 2y
Branwen 1. The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold OR basically anything by Nicholas Sparks but ESPECIALLY The Notebook. 😵‍💫 I'm sorry! I know that's an unpopular opinion because most people love him, but I always just feel like he's trying to emotionally manipulate me whenever I read his books. Blargh. 🫠 2y
Branwen 2. Daisy Jones and the Six 🙈🙊 2y
TrishB @Branwen Daisy Jones is my answer to number 1. I don‘t get it. 2y
TrishB Number 2 - all the other ones by TJR! Don‘t read American Psycho because that could also be my answer to number 1. 2y
CBee @Branwen so I liked Lovely Bones but I gotta agree with you about Sparks - too mushy and …. Ew mushy 😂😂😂 2y
CBee @TrishB I‘m guessing you aren‘t participating in #authoramonth for February then 😂😂😂 2y
TrishB @CBee 😂😂 that would be a no! 2y
RaeLovesToRead @Branwen @TrishB Haha, I LOVED Evelyn Hugo... not yet read Daisy Jones! ? Feel like I should try and get TJR on the book club agenda just to enrage Trish ?? "Shall we read Malibu Rising...?" ?? 2y
RaeLovesToRead @Branwen I'm with you on The Lovely Bones and I've avoided Sparks so far... The Notebook film though... 😭😭😭 I cry every time! 2y
RaeLovesToRead @TrishB I read the bit with the brie online. That was enough 🤣🤣 2y
BarbaraBB @Branwen I am totally with you, on all points! 2y
BarbaraBB I really hated these two (unpopular opinion) 2y
BarbaraBB 2 I would have said anything Tolkien but you are making me reconsider 😉 2y
TrishB Target your Tolkien @BarbaraBB there is some very good stuff. Just not The Hobbit. 2y
TrishB I would definitely be absent from that reading @RaeLovesToRead 2y
BarbaraBB My opinion is based on The Hobbit so you might be right! @TrishB 2y
RaeLovesToRead @BarbaraBB Ooh, I was actually tempted by The Power 🤔🤔 Is it not good then? 😅 2y
vivastory 1) Probably not THE WORST BOOK I've read, but Silent Patient def comes to mind.
2) Rupi Kaur, Colleen Hoover
(edited) 2y
RaeLovesToRead @vivastory Haha, I gave the silent patient 4 stars 🙈🙈🙈 Also, I know I shouldn't love Rupi Kaur, but I totally do 😅😋 2y
vivastory @RaeLovesToRead I think SP would work well as a film but I think since I read so many thrillers I found the twist one of the most predictable I have read. 2y
MissHel 1. I HATED The Power. It had such potential and just turned gross. I also HATED HATED The Scarlet Letter. If it had not been on my phone I‘d have winged it across the room. 2y
MissHel 2. I have little interest in most celebrity book club picks. They all sound like the same damn book. Bah. 2y
RaeLovesToRead @vivastory I kinda sorta had an inkling, but no idea it would work and then when the reveal came it was like BOOM! wow... but then, I've never been great at predicting endings! I'm gullible 😆😅 2y
RaeLovesToRead @MissHel Hehe, 2 books on my TBR! 😄 I shall lower my expectations!! 🤣 2y
MissHel @RaeLovesToRead I was sooooooo disappointed in The Power. Like, I still think about it. 2y
Oryx @trishb and @RaeLovesToRead American psycho definitely. Thanks for reminding me of that. I didn't finish it but I hated what I read of it. 2y
The_Penniless_Author Hmm...Great Expectations, maybe? Although that makes me feel bad, for some reason. The Air-Conditioned Nightmare? Possibly. I'm sure there must have been worse ones, but I can't think of anything at the moment I truly hated. As for the second part, I avoid trendy, celebrity book club picks like the plague, so too many to name 😄 2y
TrishB @Oryx I worry that hubby liked it…… 2y
Liz_M I loved Moby Dick. 😋 2y
vivastory @Liz_M Solidarity 🤘 2y
RaeLovesToRead @Oryx @TrishB One day I shall probably end up reading all these books on my nuh-uh list 🤣🤣 2y
RaeLovesToRead @The_Penniless_Author I can't say I enjoyed Great Expectations, but compared to Maestra.... 2y
RaeLovesToRead @Liz_M @vivastory I think it's on the 1001 books to read before you die list, so I will probably find out eventually 😉🐳 2y
Liz_M @vivastory I knew you'd understand! 🐳 (What, no harpoon emoji? No wooden leg?) 2y
rockpools Love these questions! For 1, I‘m going with the tagged. I read it for the International Booker Very Icky Year, and gave it a so-so on the grounds it was SO bad, I really must be missing a point. Three years on, I can confirm no, it really was that bad! The reviews are quite entertaining though. (edited) 2y
rockpools For 2, Colleen Hoover is one that springs to mind for no reason whatsoever. At some point I should probably at least summon up enough interest to read the back cover. But even that seems like unnecessary hard work! 2y
RaeLovesToRead @Liz_M No seamen or harpoons, but here's an aggressive-looking parrot with a boomerang 🪃🦜 2y
RaeLovesToRead @rockpools Aww, you are so nice, Rachel, giving your least favourite book a so-so. I don't use the Pan option very often, but I have it in my arsenal for when things get really crud! 😄 2y
rockpools @RaeLovesToRead I suspect I‘ve got less nice over the last couple of years. I may go back and update that rating 😂 2y
RaeLovesToRead @rockpools That first pan is always the hardest! 😄 2y

Uhm, no thanks. 🙅🏽‍♀️
Pretty soon I knew in which direction this would go. Maybe I‘m naive but from what I read about it at my library I thought the worst she would do is steal …

No, that kind of genre isn‘t for me. I thought I might bite me through and find it entertaining somewhere because it‘s read out loud to me.

But no, I don‘t want to engage with this.
(Additionally, it‘s a series … 🙄)

Pickpick

My first finished read of 2019, _Maestra_ was an enjoyable surprise. The plot is a dastardly rags-to-riches tale, firmly grounded in the gendered constructions of opportunity and industry, while gilding a sense of agency to a subtlety inconsistent narrator. Touches of practicality make this fantasy of a thriller seem plausible, allowing for the enjoyable anxiety needed of the genre. While not my usual fair, I found it to be good fun.

Grabbed this off a take shelf at Penguin last week after a meeting and ... You know what, I totally loved this, mostly because jeebus h. christo , can this woman aim the arrow of descriptive realism. I would read her descriptions of a train bathroom, of a McDonalds parking lot in Iowa, of a Forever21, literally anything. Is there more focus on, um, discharge than I would vote for? Sure. & the eyes wide shut sex is a lil dated. Nonetheless: 😳👍👍

babsbourland Oh man I'm reading the other posts on this and you all REALLY hated this book 8y
rachelm I noticed that trend!! I'd still give it a shot 👍🏼😊 8y
babsbourland @rachelm Good!! I think it's worth it--it's genuinely entertaining. And, yes, there's some real self-hate about women's bodies that maybe was supposed to be more satirical that it plays, but I found that stuff pretty easy to ignore. 8y

Despite the size of my TBR pile I was seduced by this in my local library. Started it on the bus home - couldn't put it down.
If I had to sum it up in three words they would be:-
1. Dark
2. Smart
3. Decadent
And if by decadent you think I mean rude then you'd be right. Apart from a couple of coincidences that had me like whaaaat? I would give Maestra a solid 5.

The Public Enemy Award (cos don't believe the hype around this) of 2016 goes to Maestra. Hands down the worst book I read this year. This book is so bad that I wanted to rate it as a "Pan" AND "Bail". It has everything a bad book needs: awful writing, stupid characters and misleading back cover text. I got through about 30 pages and severly regret sticking with it for that long (but I'm an optimist so I couldn't help myself). So if you happen to see this book just don't use the time you could spend with actual literature by reading even this book's back cover.

Mehso-so

The beginning of the book is a little choppy as the author tries to set up the story, but it gets into a much better flow towards the end. This book gets points for the great ending, but loses points at other times for the uneven characters. There are also a few graphic and sometimes violent sex scenes that don't seem to relate much to the story or explain the characters' motivations and seem to just be there to provide shock value.

I can understand why this had a low rating, but not necessarily so low. It's absolutely a debut, as one can see with the not-stellar writing that tries too hard. But the real problem is the implausible plot and extremely unlikable, yet boring MC. Somehow it still compelled me enough to finish.

I'm surprised to find this here but thanks to @Yossarian and his blow-by-blow review, I think I'll pass. 😂

Are we actually supposed to like this MC in any way? Because I don't. "The only time Id ever wanted to lose weight, I'd simply stopped eating for a week. That seemed to work fine."

At what point does this book become a thriller? Not going to waste any more time reading to find out. 80 pages in & nothing thrilling about it.

SPOILER. Ugh snobby much? "It occurred to me that one feels less guilty about murdering a man who reads Jeffrey Archer for pleasure"

I don't know wtf I just read, but I read it. Has anyone else read this book that had a different opinion?

Yossarian Best. Similes. Ever. 8y
mdemanatee @Yossarian The most sexy of similes. This book is already my front runner for that worst sex scenes in fiction award. 8y
thebookmagpie Everything I have heard about this has made it sound batshit. I've got a copy there (it was like two quid) but I'm almost afraid to start it. 8y

mdemanatee @thebookmagpie I just don't understand this book. Thin plot it was often hard for me to find my bearings in. Main character I didn't know at all. And then lousy sex scenes. And a decent amount of marketing was spent on this. I can't even figure out the market. 8y
balletbookworm 🙈😱 ew 8y
mdemanatee @balletbookworm And that was just the funniest "ew." Most of the sex scenes had me nope-ing all over. 8y
Sweettartlaura @mdemanatee Worst sex EVER!!! 😝 8y

Book club books for this month (missing: Just Take My Heart by Mary Higgins Clark which I'm listening to on audio). Next up is Maestra which I'm less than enthused to read after seeing it's Goodreads rating, yikes!

Y'all, I just can't with this book anymore. I may be throwing in the...towel? stiletto? on this one. Or maybe at it. Depends on how frustrated I get. Either way, too many other amazing things to read, one of which must be about a psychopath who has sex parties but is better than this treasure. 👠💋 #ReadWomen

SoniaC You're making the right decision lol. 8y
Mayread Not even worth a hate read. 8y
BookishFeminist @SoniaC I think so!! I just can't with the writing. 8y

BookishFeminist @Skiles You're so right--this is the first time I've flat out bailed on a book in a long time. Glad I didn't buy it! 8y
Notafraidofwords Too many good things to read to stick to something not so great. 8y
mauveandrosysky Haha I'm so amused by how much everyone is *hating* this book. Definitely going to avoid it like the plague. 8y
SoniaC @BookishFeminist lol I understand. I caught a glimpse of it on here and wouldn't even try. 8y
JillMoore1226 Shoot! I wanted to read it, but not so much now. Too many other great books out there. 8y
WordWaller Good for us to hear! I'm always tempted to read books I know I won't like just because of hype or because maybe there's something redeeming in there to surprise me. But sometimes it's just not worth and I need that reminder! 8y
JPeterson I've heard a lot of similar reviews on this one, so going to be just a pass for me. But what's this about psychopaths and sex parties? 😳 8y
Bookgirl Yep just quit 8y
Yossarian Darn. I was hoping you'd be able to explain to me what actually happened while I was reading it. 8y
BookishFeminist @Bookgirl I did. Not worth my time. 8y
BookishFeminist @Yossarian I'm not sure I would have been much help even if I had finished it, lol. For that matter, I'm not even sure LS Hilton can explain what the fuck is happening in that book. 8y
BookishFeminist @JPeterson That is literally what this book is about! Psychopaths + sex parties. Reminds me of a female version of American Psycho but really poorly written. 8y
BookishFeminist @WordWaller I'm the same way--I usually give books a shot and HATE speaking ill of books. I don't post bad reviews for that reason unless a book is really problematic or something. "Don't yuck someone else's yum." But this one tho. I just had to say something, lol. 8y
BookishFeminist @JillMoore1226 One great thing I will say about this book: it's great for the hilarity factor. And it still may be your thing so don't let me sway you if you really wanted to give it a shot! I just don't have the time & the writing is hysterically bad. But some may still like it. 8y
BookishFeminist @Notafraidofwords Yep, true! I often read books even if I'm not a super huge fan bc I like to push my boundaries/read outside my comfort zones. But I'm not going to invest tons of time or be afraid of bailing if it's really not striking the right chords. 8y
BookishFeminist @mauveandrosysky Right?! It's hysterical to me! I haven't seen this many people be so outspoken about hating a book in a long time. 8y
Lindseyastin Everyone is hating on this book so much that now I'm curious! 8y
BookishFeminist @Lindseyastin LOL I can't say I blame you; it's why I picked it up. But alas I am busy and would rather put my energy into other things. Give it a shot though- doesn't hurt! 8y
JPeterson @BookishFeminist Ah, shows how out of the loop I've been with this one. I think I just kept reading mixed reviews (usually more on the negative side), so never bothered seeing what it's about. Oh well. 🙄 8y
BookishFeminist @JPeterson No worries, you ain't missing much if it's not your thing. 8y
Ellsbeth I don't think I'm going anywhere near this one. 8y
katelizabee Oh, I gave up on that one too! For all the hype, I thought it was kind of boring ... And, like you, I thought there were other things I'd rather be spending my time reading! 8y
BookishFeminist @Ellsbeth Probably a safe bet if it doesn't sound like you're thing. 8y
BookishFeminist @katelizabee I get the impression a lot of folks did that with this book. It didn't seem to hit the right chords. It's a pity but like you said, more time for other things! 8y

Mehso-so

The sex scenes were onerous and more detail than I needed. I also wished more female serial killer than girls gone wild. I guess you could compare to Girl With A Dragon Tattoo which I have tried to read many times but just cannot get into that book. I listened to the audio version.

After spending the past few nights dragging my way through the audiobook of Maestra (😒) before going to sleep, I'm treating myself to a listen of one of my favorite albums tonight. All is right with the world again 🙏🏻
