Last Argument of Kings
Last Argument of Kings | Joe Abercrombie
The final novel in the First Law Trilogy by New York Times bestseller Joe Abercrombie. Logen Ninefingers might only have one more fight in him -- but it's going to be a big one. Battle rages across the North, the king of the Northmen still stands firm, and there's only one man who can stop him. His oldest friend, and his oldest enemy: it's time for the Bloody-Nine to come home. With too many masters and too little time, Superior Glokta is fighting a different kind of war. A secret struggle in which no one is safe, and no one can be trusted. As his days with a sword are far behind him, it's fortunate that he's deadly with his remaining weapons: blackmail, threats, and torture. Jezal dan Luthar has decided that winning glory is too painful an undertaking and turned his back on soldiering for a simple life with the woman he loves. But love can be painful too -- and glory has a nasty habit of creeping up on a man when he least expects it. The king of the Union lies on his deathbed, the peasants revolt, and the nobles scramble to steal his crown. No one believes that the shadow of war is about to fall across the heart of the Union. Only the First of the Magi can save the world, but there are risks. There is no risk more terrible, than to break the First Law... This entire series was five stars from start to finish. It's become one of my favorites, and I'm sure I'll return to it from time to time. The audio narration was very well done. Great for #scarathlon #wordsearch too.

I don‘t have a cat but here‘s Randall, my daughter @she_she ‘s lizard. Finally completed the trilogy. It has its highs and lows. I think it suffered from that 2000‘s scourge of unnecessary trilogies. Padded stories designed to sell 3 books when one would easily do. A LOTR cash-in. This isn‘t nearly as epic as the author thinks it is. The last quarter of this book picks up the pace and shows what could have been done if the tale was tightened up.

My September favorite read was easily Last Argument of Kings, finishing up the dark and amazing First Law Trilogy by Joe Abercrombie. If you love character driven stories with not a ton of plot, but plenty of action, check this one out. Some of my favorite book characters of all time here. #12booksof2022

A fantastic, brutal, epic conclusion to the trilogy. Glokta is now a forever favorite book character. I look forward to continuing in this world. This is most definitely grim dark, violent fantasy, so not necessarily for everyone. I however loved it! 5⭐️

The final book in the First Law trilogy and I'm giving myself a massive pat on the back for completing this.

This was my first ever dip into the grim dark fantasy genre. I'm always game to try anything but I'm not sure I'd rush back to read anything more from this sub genre as its not really for me.

There was a handful of characters in these books that I had an interest in and I'm glad I saw their stories through to the end.

The last book in the First Law trilogy arrived this week.

Cool jacket! The hardcover has foiling, the end papers are new, stenciled edges that form a picture when shelved with the first 2 books.

Signed by the author. Limited edition.

1. I‘m on track to finish LAST ARGUMENT OF KINGS tomorrow! Maybe I didn‘t love these books the way I expected to, but I‘ve enjoyed them a lot. I‘m glad I finally read them.

2. This Roasted Marshmallow Lager was too weird to leave at the store. Luckily, it was also delicious. I guess I DO like the occasional sweet beer.

This week‘s goal: finish the First Law Trilogy. I wasn‘t sure I felt like reading Joe Abercrombie right after I finished something by K.J. Parker, but I‘m 50 pages in after my breakfast session and I‘m really feeling it.

This is definitely not your average fantasy and doesn't have the usual tropes you see in fantasy. The story took me in unexpected twists and turns but the characters are so consistently true to themselves throughout right to the last page.

🌟🌟🌟 Whew! Honestly this was one of the most unsatisfying endings ever! These books are heavily character driven rather than plot driven, so you invest oodles into these people and you want to root for them, but alas most of these guys didn‘t have the ending I thought they would.

I don‘t want to give any spoilers, so I‘ll just say this was an enjoyable ride, the journey was awesome, but overall end result was so disappointing.

Finished this one yesterday. Very solid, consistent wrap up to the series. Not too many surprises here, which means the story was well thought out and planned.
Character work is excellent. Personal favorites are Logen and Glokta!!
Writing style, not my favorite. Very simplistic, straight to the point prose. I like prose to be flowery and lyrical.
Overall 17/20. My YouTube video: https://youtu.be/0ofmHZjBDzE

Twainy Have you or will you read the First Law World & The Age Of Madness trilogies? 🖤 4y
RobStark92 @Twainy I have not but I certainly will 😍😇 I have A Little Hatred on my kindle but tell me, are the standalones a MUST before beginning age of madness? I plan on reading the stand alone novels but I already have a little hatred on my kindle 4y
Twainy I thought he wrote in trilogies 😆 all set in the First Law world. You could skip the trilogy & short stories between The First Law & Age of Madness “trilogies”. You won‘t miss that much and you‘ll see some characters from the first 3 books are still around. 4y
See All 7 Comments
RobStark92 @Twainy I‘m ok with them being a trilogy as well all my favorite booktubers call them the standalones because they follow different POV characters and aren‘t as tightly knit together as the “trilogies” but I haven‘t read them yet, I‘ve heard others who called them the “Standalone trilogy” as well 😂 so I‘m fine either way. Best served cold sounds really good though I love a good revenge story. 4y
Twainy That‘s about right. All one world. The 2nd “trilogy” just fills in more. I‘m looking forward to Age of Madness 2. 4y
RobStark92 @Twainy I‘ve heard A Little Hatred is the best. I‘m really looking forward to it. I know the industrial revolution thingy starts I wonder if the series will end with technology ? You know like a progression into sci-fi. If he does that 💣 that would break me 4y

Not hitting this nearly as fast as I would like :S I should be finished by now 😭 waking up at four and being at work at 5:30 makes it difficult I usually average a hundred-200 pages a day but I‘ve been doing 50 or so lately. Aaaaaaah!!! Anyway reading for a few hours than sleeping lol I‘m doing Prince of Thorns when I‘m done with this trilogy. This last book is dense though.

Lesanne Prince of Thorns is outstanding but very VERY dark. 🙃 4y
RobStark92 @Lesanne so I‘ve heard 😁 I‘m excited to see how dark though because a lot of people said the same thing about ASOIAF and First Law which are both really good, but they certainly weren‘t as dark as some people made them out to be. But I‘m excited :) 4y

The last book in the First Law trilogy was a mixed bag for me. It took me a while to get through it and at times felt like I was trudging though sections whilst others flew by. The endings of the characters did not feel right. I didn't mind Jezal and Glokta's ending but others like Ferro (an awesome female character) or Logan's lacked emphasis or felt tacked on as if Abercrombie did not know how to end it. Great calibre again, just fell flat.

By far my favorite so far. This trilogy was awesome. Loved all of the characters, plot lines, and especially the twists and turns. I didn't love this trilogy, and I especially didn't love the final book. With the exception of Logen Ninefingers, there wasn't a main character I cared about. And while I like the whole 'gritty fantasy' thing as much as the next guy, there's a difference between realistic and unnecessarily depressing. Out of the trilogy, book 2 was my favourite and this was probably the one I liked the least. I'll give it ⭐️⭐️1/2 and the series as a whole ⭐️⭐️⭐️.

He frowned over at Bayaz, stabbing his finger at something in his old book. “What ever is he up to, anyway?”

And so it comes to this; an ending that must've upset a huge number of people. But Squidapus felt that if one has been following the theme and tone of the trilogy, how else did they expect it to end? A harsh sort of realism most don't look for in their tales of fantasy and magic. When everyone is out for themselves and can't become something better than they are, what happy ending could they find together? Not a fun series but well worth reading.

👑 👑 👑 👑 There was a lot to like in this book and it was good to wrap up the trilogy. I've learned a lot about myself and my reading likes/dislikes with these books. Two things I dislike are prolonged battle scenes and male-centric sex scenes (especially in stories where women are meant to be as strong and empowered). There was one plot twist that I saw coming and one that I didn't. Overall it was fun but probably not something I'll reread.

The conclusion to Joe Abercrombie's epic fantasy FIRST LAW TRILOGY brings together the various plot strands in a way that's mostly satisfying while leaving open a possible return for some of the characters and neatly subverting the mainstays of fantasy fiction but there are pacing issues towards the end, the siege of Agriont reminded me too much of Glokta's defence of Dagoska in the preceding book and the female characters were disappointing.
