Star Trek: The Motion Picture | Gene Roddenberry
17 posts | 11 read | 1 to read
THE GREAT BIRD OF THE GALAXY WRITES A STAR TREK NOVEL! The writer-producer who created Mr. Spock and all the other Star Trek characters -- who invented the Starship Enterprise, who gave the show its look, its ideals -- puts it all together again here in his first Star Trek novel! Their historic five-year mission is over. Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty all the crew have scattered to other jobs or other lives. Now, they are back together again on a fabulously refitted U.S.S. Enterprise as an incredibly destructive POWER threatens earth and the human race.

Star Trek-the Motion Picture: A Novel | Alan Dean Foster, Gene Roddenberry, Harold Livingston

(1979) I know I'm supposed to dislike the movie but y'all, I remember going to see it (at the drive-in, kids, remind me to tell you about drive-ins sometime) and you can't tell me it wasn't awesome because man I was there. The book is not objectively good -- it has *footnotes* for crying out loud, and the prose about Ilia's pheremone powers is cringey -- but so what? I can't hear old-man-me's objections over the cheers of my inner 11-year-old.

CatLass007 It was a visually stunning film. I think that watching it on the big screen was a bit tedious after a while. But later on, I remember watching it on the small screen and enjoying it. I don‘t think Roddenberry knew how to do theatrically released movies but he definitely knew how to do television. It was just the wrong medium for the film. I remember reading the book and thinking it was ho-hum. I don‘t remember seeing Alan Dean Foster as (cont)⬇️ 4d
CatLass007 an author or co-author when I read it in when it was published (I was in high school and so many of my friends were looking forward to seeing the movie and we all were disappointed). I thought Foster did a very good job with the book adaptation of TAS. His work was superior to the James Blish adaptation of TOS. But I was so starved for Star Trek when the Blish books were published, that I read them multiple times. 4d
swynn @CatLass007 Thanks for sharing those memories! I definitely remember hearing disappointment from other fans, and would probably have shared it if I had been a little older. But yes, whatever the story's flaws the film was gorgeous. I'm not sure what role exactly Foster played in the novelization, but critical-me thinks that awkwardness in the prose hints that it's more Rodenberry's work than Foster's. 3d

All these Enterprises are #ImaginaryPlaces but, at times, have seemed quite real to me! #WanderingPlaces @Cinfhen @BarbaraBB 😁🖖🏻

Cinfhen 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 5y
tournevis 🖖🖖🖖 5y
Poet422 They are imaginary only in the fact that in our current time-line they haven‘t been realized. If we conclude, as current string theory suggests, that time only exists as linear because of our perception limitations then we can safely conclude that at somewhen an Enterprise-like craft is exploring strange new worlds and seeking out new life and new civilizations... #iamandalwayswillbeyourfriend #livelongandprosper 🖖🏻 5y

Repost for @Megabooks :

I hope you‘ll join me for the #StarTrekSummerJune photo challenge featuring episodes from ST:DS9. Find a book or photo that, for you, matches the title or theme of the episode. Trekkies and non-Trekkies welcome!

DS9 was so far ahead of its time. It dealt with terrorism and war before 9/11, Columbine, and the Afghan and Iraq Wars. It‘s hard to believe the last episode aired 20 years ago!!

Megabooks Thanks for reposting!! 5y

I have #Suspicions we‘ve come to #TheEnd of #StarTrekSummerMay, #MayMovieMagic, and #AMonthofSongs, but I‘m a #Believer that #StarTrekSummerJune, #WanderingJune, and #SongsofSummer will be just as fun!

I should win a medal for that paragraph! 😁😉🥇

The episode is an interesting Beverly Crusher one, where she follows a mystery and delves into ethics. I like it!

@TK-421 I would‘ve posted yours if I could find it.

OriginalCyn620 Nice! 👌🏻 Thanks for sharing! 😊 5y

Megabooks @tournevis ooo!! I can‘t wait for the quotes!! And I seriously hope the doc comes out on DVD or digital. DS9 does have more winning episodes than bad ones. And I like serialization. Just the writing, the plot lines, all of it, just so ahead of its time. I‘m glad so many more people are finding it now on Netflix, Hulu, etc. 5y

Here are the prompts for the first month of #StarTrekSummerMay. They are all TNG episodes. Use the hashtag and tag me! 😁🖖🏻

You don‘t need to be a Star Trek fan to play! Just use the prompt.

If you are a Trekkie/Trekker, feel free to use the parts/theme of the episode.

I‘m tagging people who showed interest. Thank you! 🖖🏻 Thank you to @emilyhaldi for suggesting ppt!!

Have fun! I can‘t wait to see what you come up with!

tournevis Am I a bad person that I'd wish it were more than just TNG? 😆 6y
Megabooks @tournevis No! I‘m giving each series it‘s own month! June - TOS, July - VOY, Aug - DS9, Sept - ENT/Disco That‘s why I called it Star Trek Summer. 😁🖖🏻 6y

Anyone interested in a photo challenge where the prompts are names of episodes from the various Star Trek series? I thought that might be fun to do this summer. 🖖🏻🖖🏻

Megabooks @Cinfhen what app do you use to make your beautiful lists of songs every month?? 6y
Cinfhen I use PicCollage ☺️but my wonderful cohosts usually make their own graphics each month so I‘m not sure which apps they use!! 6y
Cinfhen I‘m no Trekkie but I think your idea is awesome 🙌🏻🙌🏻 6y
Megabooks @Cinfhen Thanks! I‘ve downloaded pic collage, but I‘m not very good at it! 🤣🤣 I think this will work for non trekkies, too. I was going through episodes, and they have universal themes like “clues” or “a matter of perspective”. Fun for the whole family! 😉 6y
Megabooks @Reviewsbylola @emilyhaldi @Mdargusch what did you use to make your cool graphic this month? 6y
Mdargusch I‘m not sure because @emilyhaldi came up with the final version. 6y
emilyhaldi I actually did mine in PowerPoint! It's was easier for me than trying to use an app ☺️ and while I would love to join your photo challenge, I am completely worthless when it comes to star trek 😆 6y
jmtrivera Make it so. 6y
Megabooks @emilyhaldi awesome! Thanks! I do have PowerPoint and more or less can use it. 😉😉 You can do the challenge even if you don‘t know Star Trek. The more I looked at it, the more the episode names lent themselves to a wide variety of books! 6y
Megabooks @jmtrivera my first month is TNG! 6y

My S for #LitsyAtoZ was Star Trek: The Motion Picture by Gene Roddenberry. This was a quick read and a fun return to the original characters of Star Trek. While this wasn‘t the best writing in the world, it has its moments and your imagination does the rest. Life is so much better with Kirk and Spock.

One thing that annoyed me in The Fifty-Year Mission is the way everyone interviewed dismisses the first film as not being a good Star Trek movie. Wrath of Khan is a better film but The Motion Picture is much more like the original show than any of the subsequent movies. Its themes of exploration of the unknown and what it means to be "human" are pure Trek, and it presents the characters and relationships perfectly (at least in the director's cut).
