Upton Sinclair's classic revelatory novel about turn-of-the-century business and immigrant labor practices. Jurgis Rudkus, a young Lithuanian immigrant in search of a better life, faces instead an epic struggle for survival. His story of factory life in Chicago in the early twentieth century is a saga of barbarous working conditions, crushing poverty, crime, disease, and despair. Upton Sinclair's vivid depiction of the horrors of Chicago's stockyards and slaughterhouses aroused such public indignation that a government investigation was called, eventually resulting in the passage of pure food laws. More than a hundred years later, The Jungle continues to pack the same emotional power it did when it was first published. Includes an Introduction by Alicia Mischa Renfroeand an Afterword by Dr. Barry Sears

About an hour before bed last night I began reading this classic. Seven chapters in I must say this is a far cry from Atonement. Beautiful writing with incredible character development. I cannot believe I didn‘t read this in High School. It‘s really good.

The main idea of The Jungle is the condemnation of Capitalism as portrayed through a searing criticism of the American meatpacking industry and its owners. Sinclair contrasts socialism as the preferred political ideology, and he sets up the working class as better equipped to share and distribute wealth fairly for all.

DNF- I figured I wouldn‘t like this, but was recommended it by a coworker. So naturally I needed some talking point. After 50% yesterday I gave up. I‘m not interested and pretty disgusted. At least I tried.

Reflecting in pitiless detail the poverty trap into which so many people fell, but is at the same time readable and relatable, you really feel for these people. It‘s also a salutary corrective for twenty first century readers. Millions of migrants are still struggling, in ways unimaginable to most of us, to improve their lot while being both exploited and vilified for wanting a bit of what we too often take for granted.

Leftcoastzen I read it as a kid , it radicalized me. 4y

I went into this classic knowing it would be emotionally challenging (early 20th century atrocities in the Chicago stockyards) & sure enough there were men falling into vats & made into lard, boys eaten by rats, etc. Up until the final chapter, it seemed this tale of a Lithuanian immigrant would be ‘life is brutal & then you die‘ but there was a reprieve I didn‘t see coming. Also, hats off to the masterful #audiobook narration by George Guidall.

Hooked_on_books I read this book in middle school and it is still with me, 30+ years later. Powerful. 5y

One of the drawbacks to reading classics is encountering racist stereotypes and slurs. The Jungle was published in 1906. There aren‘t many references to African Americans in this book set in Chicago, but when there are, they are either dangerous “big bucks” or ignorant country folk. Sigh.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Yea, I found some of that in my recent read too, and then read in the afterward, that some of the worst had been edited out already. 😳 I try to remind myself though that it is historically accurate for the writing of the time, even in the fiction of the time, it‘s jarring when you see it, but reminds me how real history was, seeing it their daily storytelling and not just sterile history lessons. 5y
Lindy @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Yes. It‘s different when novels published now are set in earlier times. I recently read MildredTaylor‘s saga that spans the civil rights era & she uses the epithets of the time but her writing also acknowledges the hurt inflicted by those kinds of words. 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Lindy Yes, very different...hindsight and all, I think it be very hard to write an authentic sounding book set in that past in many regards because it was just so pervasive & cavalier. It would be hard to write anything that treated it that offhand, without either whitewashing it and/or acknowledging the hurt inflicted, and have it sound authentic. Nonfiction, seems to manage, with the history behind it, but fiction would so much harder. I ... 5y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa ...think, in many ways, it‘s very hard for us to even imagine that blasé of an attitude about something we now consider such a fueled subject. 5y
SamAnne I‘ve been thinking about that lately too, having read a lot of Wharton, Oscar Wilde, George Elliott the past few months. So much casual anti-semitism. 5y
Lindy @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @SamAnne I‘m ready to take a break from classic books, mostly because of the bigotry. I‘ve got a stack of new books calling... 5y
SamAnne @Lindy me too. Am rereading some Woolf and Austen but am pretty much sticking to modern lit for awhile. 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @SamAnne Yes! That too! It just jumps out at you now. Wharton writes such beautiful sentences, the way she spins a story just sucks you right into the world she‘s creating...and then 💥 one of those references pulls you right out of the story. 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Lindy @SamAnne Yes, it‘s good the take a break...you wouldn‘t want to start thinking that sentiment was normal, but I think it‘s important to still read them and remember what the world was like, and renew what we don‘t want to go back too. The fact that we are shocked and upset when we come across it is a good sign, that as messed up as society is at this moment in time, we are still slowly moving in the right direction. 5y
Lindy @Riveted_Reader_Melissa good point: recognizing and being upset about portrayals of bigotry is a good sign. 5y

Finished my #bookspin book of February. This felt like reading a slow scream, it is desperate and bleak, but well-written, and I quickly started caring for the characters. A bit uncertain about how Sinclair chose to write the final chapter, but it is his book, and after all. Can't wait for next bookspin!

So depressing, Jurgis‘s family is taken advantage of and struggles at every turn. Sinclair intended the book to bring a focus on the horrid conditions of immigrant labor but it became more well-known as a depiction of the meat industry and its lack of regulations. Glad to have read this classic. The last 20% is a lecture on socialism, but the rest of the story powerfully depicts the life of one immigrant family in chicago trying to survive.

ChasingOm I love that button! 5y
Blaire @ChasingOm thank you! I pulled it from my mother-in-law‘s great collection of political pins. Seemed fitting for this book. 5y

Tamra Thank you! If my books weren‘t STILL packed in boxes I would. It‘s now looking like maybe next spring/summer maybe we‘ll get the room done. 😏 5y
Amiable @Tamra Yikes! Are you surviving with library books? 5y
Tamra @Amiable my TBR books are housed in what was supposed to be a shoe closet. Who needs shoes when you have books? 🤷🏾‍♀️ 5y
Amiable @Tamra OMG, that is so funny —we had a contractor here last week to build some bookshelves into unused eaves space on the 2nd-floor landing. He saw my numerous other bookshelves and asked my husband how many more I needed. My husband, bless his heart, told the guy, “hey, she doesn‘t buy shoes, so this is just what she collects instead.” 😀 (edited) 5y

A haunting and engaging tale, but within a flawed book. The 100th anniversary deluxe edition includes forward by Eric Schlosser and intro by Ronald Gottesman which discuss the impact of publication (food regulation, not the great social change Sinclair desired). Similar to others, I found myself in Packingtown, engrossed by the characters, only to arrive at a weak ending. Despite this, and other flaws, still a recommended read.
