The Woods Vol. 1
The Woods Vol. 1 | James IV Tynion
17 posts | 33 read | 26 to read
WHY WE LOVE IT: As fans of James Tynion IVs work in the Batman universe (BATMAN ETERNAL, RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS), we were eager to publish his first original comic series. THE WOODS gives us that same eerie, small-town horror feel we get whenever we read a Stephen King novel. WHY YOULL LOVE IT: James Tynion IV is a former protege of BATMAN writer Scott Snyder, so you know hes learned a lot about how to craft a compelling tale. If youre fan of teen conspiracy comics like Morning Glories, Sheltered, and Revival, youll immediately be sucked into THE WOODS. WHAT ITS ABOUT: On October 16, 2013, 437 students, 52 teachers, and 24 additional staff from Bay Point Preparatory High School in suburban Milwaukee, WI vanished without a trace. Countless light years away, far outside the bounds of the charted universe, 513 people find themselves in the middle of an ancient, primordial wilderness. Where are they? Why are they there? The answers will prove stranger than anyone could possibly imagine. Collects issues #1-4 of the critically acclaimed series.

Fun graphic novel with some cool concepts and characters.

This first one left me with a lot of questions, but I still liked it and want to see what happens next.

Story wise I'd say this is certainly intriguing. Earth school transported to alien moon for no obvious reason. Alien life forms. High school kids trying to save the day. Sure, it's kinda corny, but I can enjoy corny every now and then.

I will say, the illustrations are very bold and eye catching. In a lot of ways they remind me of the Papergirls illustrations, though I know they're not drawn/colored by the same person.

AkashaVampie @ElizaMarie here is another one to check out. 4y
ElizaMarie @AkashaVampie Ooo I really enjoyed Papergirls! I need to check this one out. 4y

Saw this one on Hoopla and decided to try it! So good! I need more. It's a 3 pointer, 2 b/c it's a mystery/thriller and 1 for participation. (And how fitting the main characters last name is Slaughter!)

Another comic series that didn‘t work for me. I read Vol. 1 and 2 so that I could give a full chance. It reminded me a bit of Paper Girls (plucky teens, adventure, mystery, are there aliens or time travel? What is going on?) yet wasn‘t even as good as that. Too disjointed and confusing. Too many threads that weren‘t explained. People acting as stereotypes and evolving into those attitudes quickly. Just not enough to keep me reading.

This was such a good opening to a series!
A midwestern prep school is mysteriously transported to a strange planet. Students and faculty must figure out a way to survive (and possibly find a way home?) as best they can.
I really enjoyed the fast paced story and the interesting characters introduced. I‘ll definitely be reading more of this series!

Natasha.C.Barnes This is the most stack adds I've seen on a post! 😆 7y
Yeah_I_Read This isn‘t related to your post...I just wanted to say that I‘m so sorry that your package wasn‘t on time for you to unwrap today. I was broke and wasn‘t able to send it out until Friday last week. You will definitely get it before the week is over. #retellingbookswap 7y

Went to the library to get My Favorite Thing which they were holding for me. Believe it or not, this is a narrowed down stack.

Anyone read The Woods? I'd never even heard of it before today. #litsypartyofone

While they were mostly comics and graphic novels, I officially surpassed my 2017 reading goal of 25 books. I'm working on number 28.

This seemed to be basically a zombie survival story with the zombies replaced by aliens? Factions forming in the school, sudden violent deaths, lack of food/water/basic necessities... honestly that's not usually my cup of tea but I guess I enjoyed this! I'm definitely pretty invested in the mystery elements and in some of the characters. 👍📚(graphic novel # 3 of my 11 days/11 graphic novels 😊)
