Edgar Allan Poe's Tales of Mystery and Madness
Edgar Allan Poe's Tales of Mystery and Madness | Edgar Allan Poe
19 posts | 13 read | 26 to read
A sweet little cat drives a man to insanity and murder.... The grim death known as the plague roams a masquerade ball dressed in red.... A dwarf seeks his final revenge on his captors.... A sister calls to her beloved twin from beyond the grave.... Prepare yourself. You are about to enter a world where you will be shocked, terrified, and, though you'll be too scared to admit it at first, secretly thrilled. Here are four tales -- The Black Cat, The Masque of the Red Death, Hop-Frog, and The Fall of the House of Usher -- by the master of the macabre, Edgar Allan Poe. The original tales have been ever so slightly dismembered -- but, of course, Poe understood dismemberment very well. And he would shriek in ghoulish delight at Gris Grimly's gruesomely delectable illustrations that adorn every page. So prepare yourself. And keep the lights on.

“The car followed me down the steep stairs, and, nearly throwing me headlong, exasperated me to madness.”

Whenever someone says black cat, I think of this story. Grimly and Poe are the perfect combo! 😼

10 books completed for #Screamathon! This isn‘t everything I read this month, which is exciting, but they‘re the books that count for Halloween scary/thriller/supernatural reads. This is the first year I‘ve intentionally done seasonal reads outside of December and had a ton of fun. Thanks @4thhouseontheleft for setting this up!! The top row has my favorites and I really enjoyed the Lore books on audio.

alisiakae The Lore books are going on my Chanukah wish list! Glad you enjoyed the challenge! 🎃👻🦇 6y

This collection contains The Black Cat, The Masque of the Red Death, Hop-Frog, and The Fall of the House of Usher. I‘ve long considered Masque one of my favorite short stories (and I typically detest short stories), but Hop-Frog may now take the top spot. It was deliciously gruesome. Gris Grimly‘s illustrations are sheer perfection. 4.5 stars for this wonderful Halloween read. #screamathon #spooktober

alisiakae The illustrations look amazing!! 6y
LauraJ I love his style. 6y
DGRachel @4thhouseontheleft @LauraJ The illustrations are amazing! Gris Grimly has three volumes of wicked fairy tales and a volume of Grimm‘s fairy tales that I think I‘m going to beg @dsfisher to buy me for Christmas. 😂 (edited) 6y

I can't think of anything more #macabre than a classic Poe story, and the illustrations in this book are delightfully gruesome and perfect. Actually picked this up when I visited his house in Baltimore last summer!

How was my first foray into Poe? Amazing!! I love this book. Poe is morbidly amazing, the illustrations are spot on and the cat is just perfectly creepy. Seriously.

As it turns out, my new obsession is fitting; today is the 167th anniversary of Poe's death. #rippoe

This illustrated version of four Edgar Allan Poe tales is the perfect read for this Halloween season. Gris Grimly does a fantastic attic job bringing them to life. This book introduced me to Poe and I definitely recommend it to those who are fans of Tim Burton and Neil Gaimen

As my only experience with Poe is "The Raven" (via #GilmoreGirls), this seemed like the perfect intro for #scaretober. Thanks @elkeo for the recommendation! #blameitonlitsy #libraryhaul #scarybooks #frightfest

Linsy @elkeo I'm so glad 😁 I'm loving it!! I just finished The Black Cat for the first time and it was amazing! Creepy and a bit horrifying, but amazing. I can't believe I've never read Poe before! I've clearly been missing out. 8y
ehewett88 I would love to read some more Poe as we. Like you have only read The Raven so may need to get this. 😃 8y

My #FunFridayPhoto pick is this old collection of Poe's short stories. I fell in love with Poe after my 6th grade teacher read a couple stories on Halloween. I immediately gushed to my dad, a high school teacher, about Poe's stories. He pulled this book off his classroom shelf and gave it to me. I felt so grown up! It looked like the books at my grandparents' house. I love Poe's work. This was the first of many editions I added to my shelves.

SusanInTiburon Good teacher, good dad, good pick! 8y
