The first of Trollope‘s popular Barsetshire novels, The Warden centers on the honorable cleric Septimus Harding. When Harding is accused of mismanaging church funds, his predicament lays bare the complexities of the Victorian world and of 19th century provincial life. “The theme of The Warden presents the kind of social problem that always fascinated Trollope: the inevitable clash of ancient privilege with modern social awareness.”

#Trollopeing How old is this book? People don‘t change .Mr.Bold takes it upon himself to right a perceived wrong. It might effect his relationship with the woman he loves , he tried to call the whole thing off .But when the lawyers and Newspapers get involved ,it becomes a force of its own.Would like to hear more from the women characters,Trollope tells his tale with great perception and humor.Lets read more Trollope!

CarolynM Lovely review. I too was struck by how much of the story seemed apposite in our modern world. Looking forward to more #trollopeing with you. 5y

This old book was a breath of fresh air. The names , Plumstead Episcopi ( described so well, I could see & sense it ) ❤️ I havnt heard of anyone called Nelly in a long time ... I‘d say it‘s on the way back.
The writing “tis only when he has exchanged that ever-new shovel hat for a tasselled night cap , and those shining black habiliments for his accustomed robe de nuit, that ——- talks & looks & thinks like an ordinary man. “

Well, that was thoroughly enjoyable! Thank you for getting me #Trollopeing fellow buddy readers. While it won't stop me from thinking that institutions often need reform, it is good to be reminded that there are often costs associated and, as the old saying goes, the path to hell is paved with good intentions.

LeahBergen Great review (and flowery background!). I was saying on @batsy ‘s post that we should all read Barchester Towers together later in the year. We must keep the #BandOfTrollopes together. 😆 5y
CarolynM @LeahBergen I'm definitely up for more of the Barchester chronicles. And I love the new hashtag😂 5y

This was my first Trollope & it certainly won't be the last. I found it strange, but in a very good way. It suffers a bit from being slight & short & trying to do too much at once, but the underlying themes about politics (ideology vs the decisions of day-to-day life), gender relations, & clergy life are very compelling. I like Trollope's peculiar & unexpected sensibility & his sense of irony, despite the occasional Dad Humour vibes 😎

Not just to be contrary, but I did like this chapter a lot. I think these parodies of the mid 19th century press have a lot of modern resonance. I particularly like this paragraph. The really sad thing is that it leads to our current situation where large sections of the public have come to distrust credible, impartial sources. #trollopeing

Leftcoastzen Wow,there is certainly a cycle to the human condition. 5y
LeahBergen Well, it‘s funny because I appreciated this whole chapter much more once I finished the book and read the introduction. I guess Trollope was quite pointedly satirizing his fellow Victorian authors, Carlyle and Dickens, in the characters of Dr. Anticant and Mr. Sentiment (respectively). I DID like what he had to say about the media here, though. It was mostly the blathering of Anticant that drove me mad. 😂 5y
LeahBergen Oh! And I guess Carlyle NEVER forgave Trollope. 😮 5y
See All 8 Comments
batsy You make a good point and I do get the themes he was addressing. I think my irritation was more with shift in tone in that chapter, which was jarring. I notice that it's one of his early novels, though, and I've read that his later novels become better in terms of smoothing out the narrative and structure. 5y
saresmoore Yes, good point! I‘m going to have to go back and read the intro in my book now, @LeahBergen ! 5y
rubyslippersreads @leahbergen @batsy @saresmoore @CarolynM @Leftcoastzen @zezeki I‘m SO behind. Trollope wrote this faster than I‘m getting a chance to read it. 😏 I have a book to finish for my IRL book club and then will proceed with Trollope-ing. (edited) 5y

batsy @Nute It is, isn't it! Feeling so invisible is maddening 😆 5y
saresmoore Agreed! Less pathetic old clergy, more young thinking women! 5y
LeahBergen @batsy @saresmoore I peeked into Barchester Towers and it looks like she plays a bigger role. There‘s also a woman in it called Mrs Proudie who some say is one of Trollope‘s greatest characters. 5y
batsy @LeahBergen @saresmoore Ooh, that's promising! 5y

The Warden is the first in the Barchester series of novels by Trollope. As my first Trollope novel, I found it delightful! I love reading a classic because the intricate prose makes you slow down and savor the experience. Trollope explores the control of the church in 19th c. England through humor and wit, as well as the disparity in situational ethics. At the time it was written, I'm sure it caused many a heated discussion! Recommended 👍

After June's rather light reading material, Maya and I are diving into a classic. I started with the Oxford version from my TBR, but quickly learned Barchester Towers was preceded by The Warden. That sounded familiar so I scoured my Modern Library collection and found it! (Let's just ignore the fact I was unaware that I had two copies of Barchester Towers 😳).
