Elantris = Elantris
Elantris = Elantris | Brandon Sanderson
The setting is the city of Elantris and the surrounding suburbs. There's a force in Arelon known as the Dor that randomly chooses people and grants them divine powers. Elantris was once the city of the gods, where anyone who was 'chosen' went to live. Ten years ago, the Elantrians lost their powers and caught a terrible disease instead. From that point on, Elantris became a prison city/contamination zone for any who caught that diseasefor the Dor continues to choose people and curse them.

This was the first book I read by Brandon Sanderson over four years ago, and I loved it then, but I think I love it even more now reading it as part of the larger Cosmere. I really enjoy the characters, the world is big but easily and quickly built, and the magic system is so interesting. Sanderson said he plans to write an Elantris 2, and I am definitely interested! Jack Garrett did a good job with the audiobook, too. Continuing through Cosmere!

Brandon Sanderson never fails to blow me away. I am officially dedicating 2025 to completing the Cosmere. This may be a bit slower than his other books, but the political plotting and complex character arcs make up for the pacing in every way. I related to the deep themes on religion and perhaps that‘s why I enjoyed it the most. Intriguing world and magic systems! Can‘t wait for Elantris 2. 5/5

Enchanted_Bibliophile This is one of my favourites as well. I need to start book 3 of The Stormlight Archives next year and still read Mistborn Era 2. And then try and catch-up on all the new books 😅 2w
BooksNBowls @Enchanted_Bibliophile I‘m reading Warbreaker next then starting Stormlight. 😁 2w
Enchanted_Bibliophile You'll enjoy it! It also has the religious/ political aspect you seem to enjoy. Just be prepared, Stormlight's pace starts off much slower than the others, but when it picks up you won't be able to put it down. Happy reading. 2w

Elantris has made me a Sanderson fan! We follow three POVs as they navigate a mystical, spreading disease, political/religious upheaval, and MAGIC! My complaints: “she tapped her cheek in thought“ appeared almost every time the main female character was mentioned, one of the main characters died too abruptly, and and there were some BIG unanswered questions for a book with no sequel. Still loved it, and will definitely read more Sanderson.

katasaurus YES YOU READ ELANTRIS that makes me very happy 12mo

This was my first Sanderson, but I worry it was a bad place to start. I didn‘t realize this was his first published novel, but I think you can really tell with the inconsistent plotting. The idea of the world is pretty interesting (magical kingdom experiences a cataclysm and becomes a place of exile for diseased people). Two of the MCs (though extremely Mary Sue-ish) are well drawn. But it‘s just way too long and the villain is pretty lame.

The_Book_Ninja Talking of lame…I just don‘t get his popularity. I gave up on 2 of his books. 2y
Kimberlone @The_Book_Ninja I want to give Sanderson another shot since he seems to be pretty universally loved…I might have just been unlucky with this one. I think I will try Mistborn next. Which were the ones you gave up on? 2y
The_Book_Ninja Steelheart and Mistborn. I think I picked them up thinking they would be gritty fantasy novels but they read like YA novels 2y

For a debut this is very impressive, however compared to Sanderson‘s newer works it is just not as strong or as fun to read. His fantastic world building and unique magic systems are present though. This is what kept me listening so I finished the book. I would not recommend the full book audio though. The transitions between viewpoints are non existent so I was often confused as to who I was following.⬇️

Nessavamusic It is worth the the read if you are a Sanderson fan and want to see some of the roots of the Cosmere. I would not start here though-Mistborn is still the best starting point. 3⭐️ 2y

I‘m setting this aside for now as I am gradually falling into a reading slump. This political fantasy with little action is not going to help that. I don‘t dislike it, just not grabbing my attention. Will resume later.

The characters were amazing! I really got the sense of their personality and constitutions. That being said, once you learn all the characters there was a bit of a dry spell. The world was vivid and clear and the magic system was beautiful written into the world building. Serene was just a wonderful strong character 👏

In theory, I enjoy the idea of exotic names and places and vocabulary sprinkled into Fantasy or Science Fiction. In practice, WTF?

sherri Too difficult for me.🤔 2y
GondorGirl I find audio books to be a lot easier if there are a lot of odd fantasy names (or even names/words in languages in not familiar with). 2y
Yossarian @GondorGirl I wonder how “official” audiobook pronunciations are. Did the audiobook for Game of Thrones match all the pronunciations for the later TV show? 2y
GondorGirl @Yossarian I'm not sure got all books, but I know Susan Dennard got to send pronunciations and accent suggestions to her audio reader. 2y

I think I‘m finally coming out of my reading slump, and I want fantasy. So, I decided to pick up Elantris, and I‘m so glad I did. I wasn‘t super excited about it because I‘m ready to start the Stormlight Archives, but I ended up really enjoying it. It‘s probably the best book I‘ve read all year.

DrexEdit The size of Mr. Sanderson's books is usually what stops me before I even start. I always enjoy his books though. 😊 3y

I grew up reading Brandon Sanderson‘s Alcatraz series and The Rithmatist, both of which I enjoyed, but then never bothered with any of his adult fantasies. I read Elantris for book club and now I‘m upset with myself for sleeping on this author like I have. This was insanely good. Needless to say, I will now be bingeing Sanderson‘s adult novels.

LazyOwl I've read a lot of Sanderson but I haven't read this one. Will have to add it to my TBR. 3y

I'm not sure why but when I read High Fantasy I always read at a slower pace, it must be all the checking of maps and references on other information that slows me down. But somehow these are the books I most love! It's like I live in these worlds, becoming a member of the clans and a user of the intricate magical systems.
And I usually don't want them to end.

With no power (thanks winter storms in Texas) I was able to finish Elantris! As a fan of Sanderson (started with Way of Kings) I took the less traditional route in discovering his works. I finally gave this book a try and was surprised how it found it hooks in me half way through. A magical book within a magical world that doesn‘t show a lot of its magic!

Raoden wasn't certain how to respond. "I'm guessing an optimistic comment wouldn't do much good right now."
Galladon smiled slightly, "Definitely not! You optimists just can't understand that a depressed person doesn't want you to cheer them up, it makes us sick."
"Then just let me say something true my friend," Raoden said, "I appreciate you. I don't know if you fit in here, I doubt any of us do, but I value your help. ⬇️

I picked this up at the recommendation of a coworker, and I was pleasantly surprised at how it subverted a lot of fantasy tropes. It didn't absolutely hook me, but it kept me interested enough to finish, and I'd follow Sarene to the ends of the earth. Galladon and Hrathen could have used some edits, though. #fantasy

I‘m afraid I‘ve been spoiled by Sanderson‘s newer works - it isn‘t quite as polished and it fumbled a little in representation, but ultimately the same heart is there. I sort of wish I had read Elantris first, just so I could watch Sanderson grow as an author. I feel like though it was published 16 years ago, it couldn‘t be more timely with its themes of clashing politics, classism, extremism, misogyny, and a terrifying illness. It‘s a great book.

This story takes a while to really get moving, but it's well worth the wait. A great blend of magic and character study, and a great job interweaving multiple threads of a story. Also lots of politics, but not in a way that became boring. It took a long time to understand the magic system, but not in a frustrating way - the characters head to figure it out and restore it, which was a cool process to get to follow. I will read more in the Cosmere
