Probably more enjoyable as a physical read rather than on audio. Still a pick.

It‘s the halfway point of my 2024 Reading Bracket. So far Elantris is my favorite read. We shall see if it holds the top spot after the second half 😌

I had two favorites for March. Elantris and The Emperor‘s Soul. Both Brandon Sanderson books and both in the same series. I couldn‘t pick just one because I loved them both for different reasons 🥰

Elantris has made me a Sanderson fan! We follow three POVs as they navigate a mystical, spreading disease, political/religious upheaval, and MAGIC! My complaints: “she tapped her cheek in thought“ appeared almost every time the main female character was mentioned, one of the main characters died too abruptly, and and there were some BIG unanswered questions for a book with no sequel. Still loved it, and will definitely read more Sanderson.
This was my first Sanderson, but I worry it was a bad place to start. I didn‘t realize this was his first published novel, but I think you can really tell with the inconsistent plotting. The idea of the world is pretty interesting (magical kingdom experiences a cataclysm and becomes a place of exile for diseased people). Two of the MCs (though extremely Mary Sue-ish) are well drawn. But it‘s just way too long and the villain is pretty lame.
For a debut this is very impressive, however compared to Sanderson‘s newer works it is just not as strong or as fun to read. His fantastic world building and unique magic systems are present though. This is what kept me listening so I finished the book. I would not recommend the full book audio though. The transitions between viewpoints are non existent so I was often confused as to who I was following.⬇️
I‘m setting this aside for now as I am gradually falling into a reading slump. This political fantasy with little action is not going to help that. I don‘t dislike it, just not grabbing my attention. Will resume later.
The characters were amazing! I really got the sense of their personality and constitutions. That being said, once you learn all the characters there was a bit of a dry spell. The world was vivid and clear and the magic system was beautiful written into the world building. Serene was just a wonderful strong character 👏
In theory, I enjoy the idea of exotic names and places and vocabulary sprinkled into Fantasy or Science Fiction. In practice, WTF?
Starting part two of Elantris with a great view! 😍🌿📖 I hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend so far!
It's been a perfect Saturday, sitting on my balcony, reading with a beer! Working my way through Elantris, Blood of Dragons, and TMNT graphic novels - I'm in good company! 😋🍺📚💕
Enjoyed it near the end, but it was quite a slow read, especially for Sanderson. I know it's his first big book though, but I wasn't as invested sadly.
It's still in the high 80's today so I'll only be at the park for a little while until I start to melt! ☀️ Aside from the heat it's a gorgeous day to be reading outside! 🌿📖 I hope everyone is having a wonderful Sunday!
It's in the high 89's today, and it feels like we skipped spring and went right into summer! 💙☀️🌿 Reading down by the creek provides the exact amount of refreshing vibes! 📖🍃
It's always a good start to a week when there is cake at work! 👍 This is a lemon lavender pound cake that a patron made for us and it's absolutely delicious! 😋 It tastes like a fairytale! 💕
I also have a HUGE HUGE library program tonight that I am excited/anxious about! Looking forward to this day being over! 😅 #librariansoflitsy #librarylove
Reading by the creek in the sunshine! 🌿📚💕 Hoping to soak up as much sunshine as I can before the thunderstorms roll in!
My favorite spring flower is in full bloom at the park! 🌾😃💕📖
I think I‘m finally coming out of my reading slump, and I want fantasy. So, I decided to pick up Elantris, and I‘m so glad I did. I wasn‘t super excited about it because I‘m ready to start the Stormlight Archives, but I ended up really enjoying it. It‘s probably the best book I‘ve read all year.
My March 2022 TBR is going to be short. I‘m going to be working on the books for my chapter challenge, so that won‘t leave me a lot of time for anything else. I‘m really hoping to get to Elantris this month. I don‘t know why I keep putting it off.
What are you reading in March?
Let‘s talk tbr. I‘m having a hard time planning my tbr this month. I went into a slump in January, and I don‘t really want to read anything. But I‘m excited about some of these, so I‘m hoping it will break the slump.

I grew up reading Brandon Sanderson‘s Alcatraz series and The Rithmatist, both of which I enjoyed, but then never bothered with any of his adult fantasies. I read Elantris for book club and now I‘m upset with myself for sleeping on this author like I have. This was insanely good. Needless to say, I will now be bingeing Sanderson‘s adult novels.
I listened to this on audiobook. And it was wonderful. The story just captures you as it unfolded.

March killed all my other challenges, so I'll slowly get back to everything eventually.

I'm not sure why but when I read High Fantasy I always read at a slower pace, it must be all the checking of maps and references on other information that slows me down. But somehow these are the books I most love! It's like I live in these worlds, becoming a member of the clans and a user of the intricate magical systems.
And I usually don't want them to end.
@Andrew65
ELANTRIS was beautiful, once.

My favourite thing about Brandon Sanderson is his ability to create the most astounding Magical systems. 😍
With no power (thanks winter storms in Texas) I was able to finish Elantris! As a fan of Sanderson (started with Way of Kings) I took the less traditional route in discovering his works. I finally gave this book a try and was surprised how it found it hooks in me half way through. A magical book within a magical world that doesn‘t show a lot of its magic!
So at the end of day one I've finished Elantris, read another 60 pages of Never Fade and listened to 3/4 of Mythos by Stephen Fry on audio while I (tried to) organise my office.
Spent a total of 5 hours reading yesterday and another 3 and a half hours so far today.
Pretty good start I think ☺️

An amazingly vivid high fantasy, a brilliant introduction to a mind blowing world, a crazy but easy to follow magic system, and some of the most amazing characters I've read in a long time.
I have so many praises to heap on this book but not the time to write them, and so I suggest you read it for yourself and enjoy.
Raoden wasn't certain how to respond. "I'm guessing an optimistic comment wouldn't do much good right now."
Galladon smiled slightly, "Definitely not! You optimists just can't understand that a depressed person doesn't want you to cheer them up, it makes us sick."
"Then just let me say something true my friend," Raoden said, "I appreciate you. I don't know if you fit in here, I doubt any of us do, but I value your help. ⬇️
I needed a new audiobook and this has been sat unread/unlistened to in my library for the longest, so... it's about time I gave it a listen 😅
So far so good, but it's a fair chunkster - 28 hours on audio, and according to goodreads its 638 pages! Wish me luck 🤭😊
(Covering the lending information to protect my privacy. Safety first!) I picked this up at the recommendation of a coworker, and I was pleasantly surprised at how it subverted a lot of fantasy tropes. It didn't absolutely hook me, but it kept me interested enough to finish, and I'd follow Sarene to the ends of the earth. Galladon and Hrathen could have used some edits, though. #fantasy
I‘m afraid I‘ve been spoiled by Sanderson‘s newer works - it isn‘t quite as polished and it fumbled a little in representation, but ultimately the same heart is there. I sort of wish I had read Elantris first, just so I could watch Sanderson grow as an author. I feel like though it was published 16 years ago, it couldn‘t be more timely with its themes of clashing politics, classism, extremism, misogyny, and a terrifying illness. It‘s a great book.
1. Elantris and The Sirens of Titan
2. Gold Fame Citrus
3. I don‘t really have one. If I drink anything while I read, it‘s usually just water.

This store front reminded me of Elantris.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This is the first book I‘ve read by Sanderson, but it won‘t be the last. I loved the world building & the characters, and I found the political workings interesting & easy to follow. All in all, a perfect fantasy read.
This story takes a while to really get moving, but it's well worth the wait. A great blend of magic and character study, and a great job interweaving multiple threads of a story. Also lots of politics, but not in a way that became boring. It took a long time to understand the magic system, but not in a frustrating way - the characters head to figure it out and restore it, which was a cool process to get to follow. I will read more in the Cosmere
Finally diving in to Brandon Sanderson with Elantris and holy shit less then a 100 pages and I've already tabbed a whole bunch and I am FREAKING LOVING IT!
This is my fourth Brandon Sanderson book after the Oathbringer series and I really liked it! Any other Sanderson books that come recommended.
