A page-turning adventure of a boy's journey to the land of ghosts and back. Imagine Garth Hale's surprise when he's accidentally zapped to the spirit world by Frank Gallows, a washed-out ghost wrangler. Suddenly Garth finds he has powers the ghosts don't have, and he's stuck in a world run by the evil ruler of Ghostopolis, who would use Garth's newfound abilities to rule the ghostly kingdom. When Garth meets Cecil, his grandfather's ghost, the two search for a way to get Garth back home, and nearly lose hope until Frank Gallows shows up to fix his mistake.

I thought this was a dud. The world building is definitely lacking, the use of magic is vague and remains indéfinies. As does the explanations for how ghosts appear in Ghostopolis (some are skeletons, some look younger than they were when they died, etc). Uneven, bland storytelling.

It is a quick read, I finished it while waiting in the car line at Maya‘s school. It was the only book I had on hand.

#screamathon

alisiakae Note: after reading this book, I also realized this author has been known to say make some very homophobic comments, and is a bit of a jerk. So yeah, don‘t think I‘ll be reading any of his stuff again. 5y
emtobiasz Yeah, I was unimpressed with the other book I read by this author, Cardboard. It seemed to resonate particularly strongly with the book I was reading on toxic masculinity at the time. 5y

Maya and I certainly came home with a handful of books from the library yesterday! Picked up a bunch for #screamathon while Maya made herself at home browsing the Teen Loft. 😄 📚 #bookhaul #librarybookhaul

Looks like I‘ll be doing a buddy read of The Book Thief soon, since I don‘t remember enough details and would like to be able to discuss it with her while she reads it.

JenlovesJT47 Locke & Key is sooooo good!! 5y
alisiakae @JenlovesJT47 I'm glad you recommend them! My hubby read the first to a while back and didn't like them. I wanted to see for myself. 😃 5y
JenlovesJT47 In my personal opinion, volume 1 is the best graphic novel I‘ve ever read! 🤓 5y

I really enjoyed this book because whenever I read it I was in my own little world. If you wanted to escape reality I would recommend this book. Doug Tennapel is one of my writers and I think this is his one of his best piece of work.

11 year old son was enthusiastic enough about this one to tell me if the author has written other books to get them. 😄 He read 20 min beyond his allotted time to finish it.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk LOVE Doug TenNapel! Be wary, ‘cause some of his stuff is pretty adult. Another great one for kids is 6y
Tamra @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I saw that one listed in the library catalog. He decided on the 1st in the Newt series ...... is that age appropriate? (edited) 6y
Ruthiella All signs point to this being a Winner!😀 6y

Tamra @Ruthiella I think so! Thank goodness for libraries because my kids run through graphic novels like TP. 😆 6y
merelybookish Aw, my big ole teenager son loved his books when he was younger! 6y
merelybookish I think this is another good one. 6y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk Yep! Iron West and Creature Tech (one of my all-time favorites) are probably PG-13. Black Cherry is his only hard R I think. 6y

If you haven‘t listened yet, check out our latest episode of Unabridged, which features our kids‘ current reads and recommendations. And you might want to pick up my eight-year-old son‘s newest recommendation, Ghostopolis. It‘s a fabulous graphic novel that features the underworld, ghost hunters, and a super-savvy young protagonist. (He wanted to help me set up the photo!)

I finished the challenge of reading a book with purple on the cover for #Spookathon with #Ghostopolis by #DougTenNapel and I LOVED this. It was just enough spooky but mostly very heartwarming and fun. I thought the whole thing was very well done! I think EVERYONE would love this book. 💜👻

#BlackCatChallenge Day 9: As Fats noted in her review: This graphic novel has vivid imagery, quite a few fight scenes, and a lot of ghosts (who say #Boo) and hunting. This book is definitely fast-paced. However, I thought the plot had missing pieces. There wasn‘t much of a backstory for the two main characters, and there seemed to be little room for character development. Her full review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-ayf

Hey #Littens, I'm looking for #recommendations for my niece. Her 9th birthday is coming and I need suggestions for books to get her. I have some ideas but I'm sure there's many great kids books I don't know about. She loves the Amulet series, just finished Ghostopolis, and has tentatively started Harry Potter. She specifically asked me for chapter books but I'm open to graphic novel suggestions too (thinking of getting her Lumberjanes or Nimona)

MrBook It's Ayla's first book, and she's 8. Might be a good read for your niece 😊👍🏻. 8y
MrBook Right, @KellyHashway ? ☝🏻 8y

LiteraryinPA Maybe a Raina Telgemeier book like 8y
booksareallyouneed I loved Eva Ibbotson's books, specifically Journey to the River Sea. Also, anything by Lauren St John, and Anne of Green Gables by LM Montgomery. Hope this was helpful! 8y
merelybookish My daughter (11) just burned through The Wings of Fire series by This Sutherland. She also like Raina Telgemeier books. 8y
bookdrunkard78 Something by Raina Telgemeier, I really liked 8y
sammisho My 10yo loves Raina Telegeimer and the Fable Haven Series. 8y
KellyHashway @MrBook yes, The Secret Sister would definitely be appropriate! :) 8y
anneofgreentables When I was around that age, I found books by looking through the list of Newberry honor and award winners. Found a lot of favorites that way, like (edited) 8y
anneofgreentables Richard Peck, Ronald Dahl, and Trenton Lee Stewart might be worth looking into as well. 8y
teebe @MrBook thanks! @KellyHashway where would I find this book? 8y
teebe @ZN25 thanks, I'm definitely thinking Matilda will be good for her. I'll have check out the rest too. @beatlemaniac38 thanks, I'll check these out. I'm a little hesitant to get her Anne of Green Gables but I might just give her one of my old copies. 8y
teebe @BookishMarginalia ooohh thanks, these are great suggestions. I gave her a copy of The Bad Beginning and unfortunately she wasn't too excited about it lol 8y
teebe @LiteraryinLititz thanks! Raina Telgemeier seems like a popular choice, I'll definitely check it out. 8y
teebe @merelybookish I think her brother actually has some of the Wings of Fire books so I'm sure if she hasn't already read it she will soon. She tends to steal his books lol. Will definitely check out Raina Telgemeier's books though. Thanks for the suggestion. 8y
KellyHashway @teebe It's free on Smashwords, Kobo, and Nook. If you want the paperback, you can find it here: http://www.createspace.com/6518063 8y
teebe @sammisho ooh I think Fablehaven has the potential to be a hit with both her and her brother. They both seem to like adventure fantasy. Thanks! (edited) 8y
teebe @CrazyLibraryGirl thanks for the suggestions. I might get her Matilda and I'll definitely check out the other authors. 8y
teebe @KellyHashway awesome, thank you! 8y
KellyHashway @teebe you're very welcome! 8y
