The Red Car | Marcy Dermansky
57 posts | 52 read | 138 to read
In her trademark taut, mordantly funny, and "brainy, emotionally sophisticated" (New York Times) prose, Marcy Dermansky--a celebrated master of transgression-- bring us a razor-sharp exploration of a women's search for self-realization. When Leah's former boss and mentor, Judy, dies in an accident and leaves Leah her most prized possession--a flashy red sports car--the shock forces Leah to reevaluate her whole life. Leah is living in Queens with a husband she doesn't love and a list of unfulfilled ambitions. Returning to San Francisco to claim the mysterious car she blames for Judy's death, Leah revisits past lives and loves in several sprawling days colored by sex and sorrow and unexpected delight. Through the voice of Judy, who advises from afar, the surreal nature of grief is made hauntingly evident as Leah is led toward a new sense of freedom.

This was great! Been wanting to read Marcy Dermansky for a while. The main character was weird and problematic and appealed to me a lot. 😆 One thing that stuck out to me throughout was how often Dermanksy didn‘t use contractions when I felt like most people would have. Wonder if there‘s deeper meaning to that within this book or if that‘s just part of her writing style? Guess I‘ll find out when I read more from her (which I do intend to do)!

Megabooks I loved this too! 3y

Leah has just finished her novel but is feeling unfulfilled in her marriage. Her former boss and friend, Judy, dies, leaving her a red sportscar. She goes to SF to pick it up and learns a lot more about Judy and herself. She reconnects with old friends and her young self.

This is one of those perfect contemporary fiction novels where things are not entirely rote yet not as heavy as literary fiction. Barbara, you know me so well!

Megabooks @MsMelissa perhaps this is contemporary fiction more up your alley?? 4y
Cinfhen I‘ve been drawn to this one before but feared it might be chick lit...glad to hear it was a pick!! 4y

Not as good as Very Nice but still another enjoyable easy read by Dermansky about a young woman who relives her past when she returns to San Francisco for the funeral of her former boss. I love Dermansky‘s style, humor and narrators. I‘d like to be friends with her 😀

Leah's life is just sort of stalled -- not a great marriage, not a great job and then she gets an email letting her know that her former boss/mentor has died and left her a red sports car. Leah heads across the country for the funeral and a lot if soul searching. At times I felt like the narrative wandered a bit, but overall I enjoyed.

Interesting story about a unique young woman finding her path. It had well drawn, layered characters but I had a hard time liking any of them. I tried to like it but probably wouldn't have finished it if it wasn't so short.

This one though....No. a shame because the audiobook narrator was very good, very sad she had to read such drivel. A flakey, sex-crazed and painfully shallow character with a shallow story. I quit after listening to this lame sentence, "Oh. I decided I liked plants." I couldn't do it any more. I was having misgivings throughout, but that lame sentence broke me. Eject! Thrown against the car window. Done. ?

On hour 7 of 24 in 48 readathon. Loving The Red Car. Dermansky‘s novel nods to literature and pop culture serve as delightful signposts of surrealism—there are strains of Alice‘s Adventures in Wonderland and Haruki Murakami novels, HBO‘s Six Feet Under and psychedelic drug use. @24in48

While it was an interesting story, I just couldn't get into the writing style. The flow just felt too staccato to me. It kept the story away from me instead of letting me get engrossed in it.

A fun, short novel narrated a woman who leaves her life in San Francisco to pursue a writing MFA in NYC & get married. But her past catches up to her when she inherits a red sports car & she winds back up in San Francisco trying to figure out why she left it behind. Her narration is quirky & aloof but relatable as she mentally see-saws between her two lives. It's a great self-actualization story that explores friendship, marriage, & identity. 🚗

So many feelings in such a tiny book. Not one bit of me wanted it to end but the length was just what it needed to be; every sentence is more important when there are less of them. There was a hopeful melancholy mood to this book that felt strikingly real to me. I don't know if it is possible for anyone to not like this book.

i signed some copies of my book today at Barnes & Noble in New York today. I met a woman who was so excited to meet an author and asked me tons of questions. There was an awkward moment where I did not know what happened next. I could have said "I will sign one for you if you want," but I didn't want to pressure her into buying my book so instead I said "Nice to meet you" and left.
