Pippi is the only girl in the world who can do exactly what she likes. She is nine years old and lives in a cottage with a horse and a monkey. Her friends Tommy and Annika have to go to school and go to bed when they're told, but they still have time to join Pippi on all her great adventures.

dabbe Oh how I loved Pippi Longstocking! I tried to do a book report on one of the books in 5th grade, but the teacher said I couldn't because it wasn't “on the list.“ And we wonder why kids just might not like reading in school. 😝 3w
lil1inblue @dabbe I loved Pippi so much, too. I can't believe you couldn't do a book report on her! Isn't the whole point to get kids excited about reading? I was so blessed in the teacher department - almost all of my teachers (elementary all the way through college) went “off list“ for book selections, and we were allowed to, as well. 😍 3w
Eggs I read Pippi over and over! It was my first chapter book I bought from the paper catalog thingie (Scholastic) before there were bonafide book fairs. 3w

dabbe @lil1inblue It's at the point now in my district where teachers are not allowed to teach ANYTHING that is not on the approved curriculum list. And even some books that are on the list but labeled “sensitive“--teachers can teach only if they get signed parent approval. I am glad your experience was so rich and freeing. 🧡🍁🤎 3w

Finished last night for #ChildrensClassicRead2024 It was fun to reread Pippi, it‘s been decades & the books & movies were something I shared with my dad. As a child I wanted to hang out with Pippi, as an adult, she tired me out! 😉 I need to see if I can find the movies now.

So fun to revisit Pippi! This is the edition I had as a child.

I read the 2020 translation in ebook and found some differences from mine. Pippi refers to “fly poop“ -- I was positive I had never seen that, and indeed it was “fly speck“ back in the day.

And while in the old translation, Pippi ate a “rosy mushroom,“ in the new one it's a “beautiful red death cap toadstool.“ I'm not sure which I find more appalling! 😂

Cheryl_Russell_BookNotes I vote for “rosy mushroom”🍄 7mo

Tonight‘s #Naturalitsy #HyggeHour features Pippi for #ChildrensClassicRead2024 & finishing up A Little Bit of Astrology for #travelingstars2024 so I can get it sent out this week.

Drinking green tea & enjoying some KitKats a coworker brought back from Japan & a mini lemon bar from Friday‘s meeting. Mood is a bit blue that Monday came so quick.😔Last week was hard & busy & I think this week will be the same, but it‘s nice to have this quiet time.

slategreyskies I find the Kit Kat flavors available in Japan to be fascinating. Did you know that, in the past few decades, there have been hundreds of different flavors of Kit Kats released in Japan? I couldn‘t even think of hundreds of flavors if I wanted to, and the creativity with the flavors released is just amazing! Everything from roasted tea to wasabi to chestnut to sweet potato flavored ones. So incredibly cool! 🍫 7mo
DebinHawaii @slategreyskies Yes! They are so creative with the flavors & I love that! The ones here weren‘t too different/fancy-white chocolate strawberry & strawberry cheesecake but they were good & fun to try! 7mo

A timeless classic that never fails to bring a smile to my lips. Ahead of its time in some things, not so much in others (and this should definitely be updated), it's a simple story (or collection of stories) with remarkable characters. It's hard, if not downright impossible, not to be charmed and inspired by Pipi.

Sorry for the bad cover, it‘s part of a best book of the 20th century series.

I grew up watching Pippi on television, the Swedish series from the 60s. So no surprises when it came to what happened, each chapter feels like an episode. I am surprised at how true to the book the series actually was. And after reading the book I actually know how old Pippi is, and it‘s younger than I thought. She‘s 9.

Ruthiella I think I read the book first at about age 9. We watched the Swedish adaptation here in the US in the late 70s and 80s too, dubbed of course. 11mo

Thanks for the tag @TheSpineView ! 👍

1. I don‘t know if I have a favorite female literary character, but Pippi Longstocking came to mind. She can do anything!

2. Apparently Stieg Larsson imagined Lisbeth Salander as a modern, grown up Pippi. I‘d like to transport Pippi into Villette as Lucy Snowe‘s childhood friend. She‘d certainly change the trajectory of that novel. 😂

dabbe In 5th grade, for the dreaded required book reports, I begged the teacher to let me read a Pippi Longstocking book (I was on a roll with her). She told me if the book wasn't on “the list“, I couldn't read it. What teacher would say that now? I'd be thrilled if my students wanted to read ANYTHING on their own! 🤣 2y
Ruthiella @dabbe Book reports were so hard in 5th grade! 😂 I hope today‘s teachers encourage their students as you do to read what interests them! 👍 2y
Reggie Whaaaaaaaat, Lisbeth Sander as Pippi?!!!! I have never read the book but growing up her movie was on a lot and I loved it and can still hear that Pippi Longstocking is coming in to your town song. And her and the kids scrubbing the floor on scrub skates. Aww Pippi! 2y

This book was wild man. I read the second one with my fifth grade class and honestly had no memory of anything about the characters. I was definitely not expecting people to just let Pippie get away with all her antics, albeit that they were ridiculously hilarious. Still not sure what a “scrubbing vacation” is though. 4⭐️

Pippi, who lives alone in Villa Villekula with her monkey and horse is such a spirited and confident child and it a joy to escape into her world. I like children's literature because a child 's imagination can overcome the bleakest of life circumstances, an ability that people generally lose with age.

"A childhood without books – that would be no childhood. That would be like being shut out from the enchanted place where you can go and find the rarest kind of joy." When I was young, I was no different than I am now; in other words, I was a reader. Somehow, though, I missed some kids classics like this book and the Narnia ones. Where I‘m enjoying the Narnia ones, Pippi Longstocking is just okay. At 8 or 9, I suspect I would have loved it. At 64, I keep thinking she shouldn‘t be living alone and find some of her behavior to be bratty. That said, I will probably give it to my 8 year old granddaughter. 😊
