Chuck Dutton built Music City Salvage with patience and expertise, stripping historic properties and reselling their bones. Inventory is running low, so he's thrilled when Augusta Withrow appears in his office offering salvage rights to her entire property. This could be a gold mine, so he assigns his daughter Dahlia to personally oversee the project. The crew finds a handful of surprises right away. Firstly, the place is in unexpectedly good shape. And then there's the cemetery, about thirty fallen and overgrown graves dating to the early 1900s, Augusta insists that the cemetery is just a fake, a Halloween prank, so the city gives the go-ahead, the bulldozer revs up, and it turns up human remains. Augusta says she doesn't know whose body it is or how many others might be present and refuses to answer any more questions. Then she stops answering the phone. But Dahlia's concerns about the corpse and Augusta's disappearance are overshadowed when she begins to realize that she and her crew are not alone, and they're not welcome at the Withrow estate. They have no idea how much danger they're in, but they're starting to get an idea. On the crew's third night in the house, a storm shuts down the only road to the property. The power goes out. Cell signals are iffy. There's nowhere to go and no one Dahlia can call for help, even if anyone would believe that she and her crew are being stalked by a murderous phantom. Something at the Withrow mansion is angry and lost, and this is its last chance to raise hell before the house is gone forever. And it seems to be seeking permanent company. "The Family Plot" is a haunted house story for the ages-atmospheric, scary, and strange, with a modern gothic sensibility to keep it fresh and interesting-from Cherie Priest, a modern master of supernatural fiction.

I love a good ghost story, and this one checked all the boxes. Big house with a dark past, check. Initial uncertainty that what they‘re seeing is really there, check. Bodies buried nearby, check. Cataclysmic storms, check. Escalating danger, check. Add in good character development, and a tight plot, and we have a winner! A team of four are sent to salvage the treasures from Withrow House, but the house, and it‘s ghosts, don‘t want them there.

“YEAH, SEND HER on back. She has an appointment.”

Not a super exciting opener for #firstlinefridays , but I'm still looking forward to digging into this haunted house story. I loved this author's YA haunted house book, The Agony House, so I have high hopes for her Adult take on the genre.

Fun coincidence... I just happened to start this book today, on the 15th of October, and right here on the second page, she says she wants the house demolished by October 15th. Feels serendipitous, and since it's a haunted house book, even a little spooky 🎃👻

Typical haunted house story. I enjoyed the characters and actually hoped there would be some romance between two of them (the two who aren‘t related!). Sadly, that didn‘t happen. The story was still good, but I think a little hint of romance would have helped character development and better explained the anger of the most threatening ghost.

The heart wants what the heart wants. Since it's Halloween week, the heart wants creepy. I don't know why I don't read many haunted house tales, but this one was a Book Riot Deal of the Day the other day, so I pressed the buy button. This one has a nice, creepy vibe. It also has a strong female lead with a sense of humor. There isn't really much original here, but I still liked it quite a bit, and I'm glad I picked it.

This surprised me. Again not as creepy as I was hoping for, but there was something very compelling about the haunting, the mystery behind it and how the house and the other characters interacted with each other. Easy to read there were a few slow points but I was too invested to care much. Wasn‘t the biggest fan of the ending mostly because I was hoping for more but it suited the story. Could definitely see this as a film. #wintergames #SlayBells

Picking up this for my next read as I watch White Christmas. I‘ve read one book in the past by Cherie Priest that I wasn‘t the biggest fan of but I‘m determined to give her another shot. Will I actually start this tonight? Maybe. Will I get sucked into White Christmas even though I‘ve seen it hundreds of times before? Most definitely 😅 #wintergames #SlayBells @MidnightBookGirl @Clwojick @StayCurious

My favorite part about this book was the fierce protagonist. Her ability to maintain a steady head in the middle of fear is empowering, and lifts the terror a little higher. Yes!

American Pickers meets a haunted house story! What a unique way to tell a ghost story! A group of salvagers begins to break down an old estate in Chattanooga, TN when they begin experiencing strange things. Creepy, southern gothic ghost story.

Reminiscent of The Haunting of Hill House and Insidious, this novel features a tough, slightly damaged heroine who didn't make me eyeball roll once; serious place as character; and creepiness in spades.

Dahlia is tasked with tearing apart an old estate in a matter of days, a job which requires her and her small crew to sleep in the house while they work at all hours to salvage what is can be resold.

The house has other ideas, obviously.

Slightly creepy (yay!) with a setting that interests me big time (yay!), but slightly one dimensional characters & convos (boo). Overall worthwhile & quick. 👍
Dahlia's family business is in salvaging old homes, and when the business is about to go under, they get an offer they can't refuse with the Winthrow estate. But as things start going wrong and they find themselves not alone in the house, Dahlia wonders if it's worth it at all.

I'm behind already 🙄
The first year after leaving my ex, I made a vow I would read 35 books (that's huge compared to the big fat 0 he let me read when we were together). I don't think I reached it that year, but I've been slowly increasing each year since. I read the most ever in 2016, with a goal of 70 and getting to 85 instead. Maybe this will be the year I break 100?!

Okay, let's try this again. Only a few pages in and it already reads better than the one I attempted this morning.
I've taken down all Christmas decor, packed the kitchen to prep for tomorrows demo, and prepped some quick heat meals that will be easy to make with no kitchen at all. I hope. Maybe I should take a "before" pic of my sad, old, falling-apart kitchen.
If you could renovate one room in your house, which would it be?

Cortg Well, my master bath because that's currently in the middle of a renovation 😬 Good luck on your new kitchen!!! 8y
MicheleinPhilly We renovated our kitchen 2 years ago. My suggestion is to invest in paper plates and plastic utensils. I know it's not the most environmentally friendly suggestion, but washing dishes in the bathroom got old REAL QUICK. Good luck! 8y
Mimi28 The bathroom because my mom needs one of those walk-in tubs. Lol, we use paper plates all the time anyway because we generally don't like washing dishes and it's much easier to feed the cats. Good luck with everything! 👍😎 8y

Lost myself here. That fuzzy moment of transitioning from one vivid world to another. Archaeologist at heart, loved the descriptions of the things found, especially the hearse carriage, and all the stained glass pieces. I loved the slow unraveling of the history of the house/ Withrow family. No wonder there were ghosts, with a past like that.

I have loved Cherie Priest since her Eden Moore books and I have loved haunted house stories as long as I can remember. Put them together and you have something that would keep most people up at night (I am not most people--I fall asleep to The Exorcist and don't have nightmares.) But this book is good and creepy, atmospheric, and has some great ghosts and a fantastic old house.
