Petrified Flesh
Petrified Flesh | Cornelia Funke
Ever since Jacob Reckless was a child, he has been escaping to a hidden world through a portal in his father's abandoned study. Over the years, he's made a name for himself as a finder of enchanted items and buried secrets. He's also made many enemies and allies most important, Fox, a beautiful shape-shifting vixen whom Jacob cares for more than he lets on. But life in this other world is about to change. Tragedy strikes when Jacob's younger brother, Will, follows him through the portal. Brutally attacked, Will is infected with a curse that is quickly transforming him into a Goyl a ruthless killing machine, with skin made of stone. Jacob is prepared to fight to save his brother, but in a land built on trickery and lies, Jacob will need all the wit, courage, and reckless spirit he can summon to reverse the dark spell before it's too late."

I sort of binged it, the reading is brilliant, well arranged with some music. Cool dark twist on familiar German fairy tales. I liked how technological advancement trickled from our world into the magic world behind the mirror, making it fantastically mismatched and creating a rather unusual connection between the two. I haven't seen it done like that before!

I read this over ten years ago, and back then, it had a completely different cover. I enjoyed it a lot more than when I was 12. The writing, as always, is very metaphorical and also gentle (I don‘t know how else to describe it), though it has some scary elements too, which is why I won‘t really recommend it for children.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I‘m a huge fan of Funke‘s work, and this one, while a bit rocky in the beginning, didn‘t disappoint! Now I need to find the second and third books...

What a wonderful story!! The Inkworld trilogy is still my favorite by this author, but I enjoyed every minute spent reading this book, and I can't wait to continue the series!

First book in the “Reckless“ series by Cornelia Funke. This could fall under MF or SF due to the nature of the novels. More for grades 7 and up, but it can be a safe read for grades 5th and 6th maybe even 4th with parent approval. The UDL 4.1 regarding varying the methods for response and navigation along with EL 2 for promoting cooperation (small groups). A must-read and wonderfully descriptive book for all ages. #UCFLAE3414F19 #CMC

Tinks If you ever read the “Ink Heart“ trilogy, you will definitely want to immerse yourself in the series as well. Set in a world all of its own with interesting characters of the most imaginative mind. Loved reading from beginning to end and found myself not wanting to put it down. Place your hand on the Mirror and enter the Mirrorworld. A parallel universe where fairytales are historical truth.

I give this book 4/5 ⭐️
The beginning was slow and confusing. I got introduced to so many characters and places so fast I didn't know what was going on. From around page 100 the actual adventure started. From then on I devoured the book.

I recommend this book to anyone who loves fairytale retellings and adventures.

The Mirrorworld provides a tarnished reflection of familiar fairy tales, with politics and motives yet unclear. But some things are constant: true love, honor among thieves and untrustworthy fairies. Treasure hunter Jacob Reckless does everything he can to protect his cursed brother, pulling the reader deeper into this land, lush with beauty and mayhem. I'm definitely continuing this series.

I made it to page 288/394. Normally I'd try to press on and finish, but oh my gosh I cannot bring myself to care what happens to the two brothers in this story. So I'm going to give you the ending I am going with. Fox kills them all and finds a dude (or lady) who respects the shit out of her. Clara goes back to the real world, finishes med school and becomes a bad ass doctor and finds the cure for cancer. Boom.

I am only about 40 pages in and I'm not sure how I'm feeling about it. You get dropped in mid-action, which would be fine if some things were explained. I have checked three times to make sure that this is the first book in the series. I haven't read any of Cornelia Funke's other books so I'm not sure if this is just her style of writing. Parts of it make me want to keep going, but if nothing gets explained I may just bail.

pppooraikul Hmmm. I've been wanting to read that book. I'll keep my eyes out for your review (or bail). 8y
haileybean @pppooraikul I'm about 180 pages in, and I kind of can't stand Jacob, the main protagonist but I'm enjoying the side characters. I'm going to continue reading it because I want to know what happens with them more than him. 8y

A full fantasy world, with creatures and rules galore, and a touch of the fairytales we all know and love. Along with the more mythical aspects, this book also focuses on relationships between characters, most notably brotherly love. A good read.

⭐⭐⭐1/2
In the end I did quite enjoy this, even if no-one thinks to themselves in the third person the way Jacob Reckless does. The second half was much better and I'll probably pick up the next two to see how it ends. Hopefully not the large print version next time!
