Reckless | Cornelia Funke
post image

First book in the “Reckless“ series by Cornelia Funke. This could fall under MF or SF due to the nature of the novels. More for grades 7 and up, but it can be a safe read for grades 5th and 6th maybe even 4th with parent approval. The UDL 4.1 regarding varying the methods for response and navigation along with EL 2 for promoting cooperation (small groups). A must-read and wonderfully descriptive book for all ages. #UCFLAE3414F19 #CMC

Tinks If you ever read the “Ink Heart“ trilogy, you will definitely want to immerse yourself in the series as well. Set in a world all of its own with interesting characters of the most imaginative mind. Loved reading from beginning to end and found myself not wanting to put it down. Fearless | Cornelia Funke
post image

I chose this author as my “Author Study“. So, I figured why not add it to my Litsy list. “Fearless“ by Cornelia funke is part of a series and the second book in that series. Although it is considered a book for grades 7 & up, I feel it is safe enough for 5th and 6th graders in the elementary level. The UDL 4.1 regarding varying the methods for response & navigation along with EL 2 for promoting cooperation. A must read of all ages #UCFLAE3414F19

Tinks A world where you can get lost in, from one page to the next. It's a world on the other side of a mirror that will enchant you with colorful details and have you warming up at times to even the meanest of characters. This book is about urgency and desperation that will keep you at the edge of your seat and wanting more. Best under MF or SF. Teaching Strategy AS #UCFLAE3414F19 #CMC (edited) 5y

The Banshee | Eve Bunting
post image

The Banshee by Eve Bunting is a captivatingly creepy tale about a boy who must overcome his fears about a long ago story that has been told from one generation to the next. It is being categorized as Irish folklore. I'll put it under either MF,SF. The UDL 9.1 regarding promoting expectations and beliefs that optimizes motivation along with 1,3 for teach questioning for clarification & encourage self-talk (positive thinking). #UCFLAE3414F19 #CMC

Tinks A nice spooky little book to read during this time of year. Make sure you are under the covers, feet off the floor, and a flashlight on hand. Wonderful read for all ages and a must-have for every classroom library. This book was also awarded the Caldecott medal. UCFLAE3414F19 #CMC 5y

Ella Sarah Gets Dressed | Margaret Chodos-Irvine
post image

This adorable picture book by Margaret Chodos-Irvine will be, in my opinion be best under RF. I see this happening to most little girls' Ella Sarah's age & maybe even many other age groups for that matter. The UDL 2.4 & 9.3 regarding promoting understanding across languages & develop self-assessment & reflection along with EL 5 for teaching technical vocabulary supporting key concept. This book was also awarded the Caldecott medal. #UCFLAE3414F19

Tinks This spirited book is about learning about yourself, learning independence and just having fun with being your own individual person. a must-read and a must-have for all elementary classroom libraries. UCFLAE3414F19 #CMC 5y

Celia Cruz, Queen of Salsa | Veronica Chambers

Pickpick

#UCFLAE3414F19 #CMC
This biographical picture book is about one of the biggest idols from my own culture, Celia Cruz. Celia Cruz was a singer from Havana, Cuba who became known for being “La Reina de la Salsa“ or the queen of Salsa. http://www.monicabrown.net/files/Tools_for_Teachers_CELIA.doc
This book would best be taught through RA using ESOL strategy 5 and EDL 2.1 to clarify the spanish language vocabulary and promote understanding.

kgarzon This looks like a really cool biography to use in the classroom! Definitely adding to my to-read list :) 5y
fabozzia This book, just from the cover, looks very cool and makes me want to read it. It is a great book to bring into the classroom and brings some new things, like the salsa, to introduce to the students. 5y
cassandram Oooo very interesting book!! Definitely would want to read this. Also would be great for Hispanic heritage month. 5y
DrSpalding I am adding this to my stack! I can just imagine reading this book with salsa music playing in the background. 5y
CPettersen @DrSpalding play “guantanamera” by Celia Cruz really softly in the background while reading this one. 5y

Who Was Gandhi? | Dana Meachen Rau
post image
Pickpick

This biography about Gandhi is a part of the New York Times Best-selling “Who Was“ series. Gandhi was a shy boy growing up and avoided people as he walked home from school every day, and yet eventually he became the face of the movement for Indian independence from British Rule through nonviolence. This book would best be utilized in the classroom as an IR with discussions after. https://www.famouspeoplelessons.com/m/mohandas_mahatma_gandhi.html

CPettersen #UCFLAE3414F19 #CMC
UDL 7.2 and ESOL strategy 13 would be effective in teaching how Gandhi's protests are still relevant in children's lives today and to be able to connect it with experiences in the students' own lives.

DrSpalding This would be a good resource for research and your website highlights the vocabulary that the reader would need to understand the text. Good choice. 5y
